Random Current Brave #9

It's the 22nd! You know what that is! No, not Earth Day. Screw that hippie stuff, it's...

J-Hey Day

The Earth celebrates Jason Heyward don't ya know. Every 22nd day of the month is now J-Hey Day. FOR EVAR

So, raise of hands. Who is completely freaking sick and tired of Jason Heyward mania? Go ahead, raise 'em up high. My, that's a lot. I don't blame you, there's been a whole lot of unproven rookies in the past few years that have been the ol' suckarooni. Joba's sure counting those Cy Young Awards. Kosuke is leading the Cubbies to the promised land for sure. Was anyone overhyped to hell last year? Not Chris Coughlan and Andrew Bailey, that's for sure. The players that make the cover of irrelevant monthly price guide publications are not necessarily the best players in the league.

However... sometimes the overhypers get it right. They got it right with Heyward.

One of the better things I'll write this year just got published on a Phillies blog. Phungo asked me about Jason and I basically said he's the best prospect since Pujols. I truly believe this. Mainly because I got a first hand look at Jason at a Triple-A game in Gwinnett late last year. The dude has skills, he not only has five tools, but he used all of them in that game. The speed and the arm and the power are easy, hell Francoeur had that. Jason has something more, he's got patience. he'll take a walk. He's got smarts, he'll get struck out on a pitch, then make an adjustment and hit a homer on the exact same pitch later that game. He's got humility, he goes out does the best he can and doesn't showboat. And the kid is friggin twenty. He can't legally order a beer yet.

If you think I'm a crazed homer who is blinded because my favorite team has the new hotness rookie, that's fine. I understand. I've got a half a dozen rookie cards of Andres Thomas filed away as testament of how bad I am at prospecting. If you truly think that Heyward will end up a bum, then just trade me his cards. I have a pretty huge inventory, I can probably find something you want. Have an auto? I've got autos of Hall of Famers like Aparicio and Robinson and Killebrew and Mazeroski. I'll trade you one of 'em  for a J-Hey auto and throw some other stuff on top of it just because. Pull one of the Heyward relics from Topps Pro Debut? I got tons of relics, tell me what player you like. Got some base cards? I'll take them too, name the player you want in return, I'll find one. I'll send first. If you really think this guy is the next coming of Joe Charboneau then rip me off. I'll be happy to do so.

I've already got about 10 or so Heyward cards with some dupes mixed in. The first Redemption from Topps Finest is a Heyward card so obviously the presses are going to start to run on Heyward cards real soon. It's time to start the collection for reals. I'm basically going to try to collect every J-Hey card I can get my hands on. Not going to be quite as obsessive as Thorzul and his CC collection, but I'm certainly going to do my best to fill up a monster box one day like I've done with My Chipper collection. Here's the first Heyward card I have specifically bought. All the rest I've pulled out of packs or got in trades. I overpaid.

This is a 2009 Obak card of Heyward. This wasn't from the main set, but was an isert in one of TriStar's later releases. I've wanted it since it came out but I haven't seen it anywhere before this week. Not buying online anymore has put a crimp in my collecting, but I'll make up for it with perseverance. This one was sitting in a case at Atlanta Sports Cards for ten bucks. Now this probably isn't a ten dollar card and in a year or two when the hype has calmed down and there are plenty of cards of Heyward out on the market I'd probably be able to pick this one up for a couple bucks. You know what? Heck with that. I like Heyward, I believe in Heyward, I'mma gonna collect Heyward. If it means passing up 40 cards at the quarter box, so be it. I like this card enough to overpay.

The card has Jason in the same red Gwinnett home uni that he wore in the game I went to. I took some pictures on a crummy camera, I really need to figure out what I did with them. The background has a nice pic of the Gwinnett stadium stands if I'm not mistaken. It's a pretty nice little ballpark if you're even in North Georgia and want to see a cheap game. They also had a variation card that had some trees in the background instead of the stadium. I'll probably go back and pick that one up eventually assuming one of you vultures doesn't get there first. The back says this is a limited edition of 425. I'm not sure if that is a total printing number or what. Not sure that it matters. It's a nice card of my future favorite player that reminds me of a nice day I had at the ballpark last fall. And that's what this hobby is all about, isn't it?

The Obak Box is Broke

Ripped it this morning. I'm not going to show off anything from it quite yet, you'll get to see the break soon enough. I videoed the whole thing and once I get it edited into You-Tube friendly chunks I'll post it. Here's some pics of the box in the meantime.

The box itself is serial numbered. I found that to be quite odd. Weirder still is the mini card strip box topper is not the same number as the box. That's a missed opportunity by TriStar right there.

Here's a couple of cards printed on the box. You'll see plenty more of those two in the box rip itself. Oh, sorry... *SPOILERS*

Coming from guy who appreciates these sorts of things, the back of the box is extremely well done. Here's a small writeup on the original Obak cards:

The set breakdown:

And coolest of all, a set checklist that details all the different subsets and has descriptions for many of the subjects.

The break itself was very good, I got most of the set and beat the odds on the number of 'hits' in the box. Once I post all the videos I'll do a proper box recap post. That will probably be this weekend, Monday at the latest.

Pack O' Obak

Christmas well and truly kicked my ass, so I'm going to be lazy 'till 2010 and just post some packs. I got no cards for Christmas (although I might use a gift card towards some eventually) but I picked up three retro packs from Wally World yesterday. I had planned to snag a Topps206 blaster, but some cretin appears to have bought them all. I was going to be the cretin to buy all the Topps206, dammit!

Christmas shoppers completely demolished the card aisle at Wally World. The blasters were more or less ok, but all the gravity feed containers for the loose packs were a random mix of pretty much every type of pack that had been sold there over the past 12 months. I found a Topps Heritage High pack in the Upper Deck Football feeder. Four packs of O-Pee-Chee were in the top of a Score football box. Allen & Ginter and American Heritage jumbo packs were shoved in a basketball feeder. These Obak cards were in the Spongebob box. I even saw a rogue Obama pack floating around. I bet I could have found some vintage packs from the '70s had I dug deep enough. I'm glad I finally found the Obak, this set has grown on me like mildew.

50 Arnold "Jigger" Statz

My favorite thing about Obak are the old timers. Here's five factoids about Arnold.
1) He played for the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League.
2) The PCL Angels had nothing to do with Anaheim and were affilliated with the Chicago Cubs.
3) Arnold played 8 years in the bigs with the Chicago Cubs, New York Giants, Boston Red Sox and Brooklyn Robins (Dodgers).
4) Arnold played 18 years in the PCL and has the record for most hits with 3,356.
5) The man's nickname is Jigger. Seriously, Jigger.

30 Josh Vitters

Josh is a highly ranked Cubs prospect and may very well be the Cubs' only high ranked prospect judging from the amount of times his name pops up on MLBTradeRumors.com. This card has an odd stormy background which made me wonder if it was a variation of some sort. After some research I found the checklist has plenty of variation cards, but Vitters' ain't one of them.

NNO Rollie Zeider mini

Sweet! A 1909 original card reprint! Tristar 'forgot' to number these cards, but I'm guessing that this was on purpose. I've become so cynical and jaded, haven't I? Here's a pic of the original Rollie. I'm not going to do the research right now, but Rollie might just be the only player who ever played for Chicago's American league, National league and Federal league teams.

87 Abner Powell

Another old timer. Abner looks like a refugee from a Mack Sennett comedy. He's actually an unheralded innovator of the game, responsible for rain checks, ladies' day and the infield tarp. If it weren't for this guy, we would never have had this.

97 John Heisman

Heisman was the president of the Atlanta Crackers?!?!! (Yes, that's this Heisman) This might be the best card in the set. Heisman is better known for his football exploits, including the infamous 222-0 whoooping Georgia Tech put on Cumberland.

DAMMIT now I'm going to have to find a box of this stuff. And I don't mean a blaster.

The Weirdest pack I have EVER opened.

I know I wasn't going to do full pack rip posts anymore but this one... well it just has to be experienced all at once. This was my introduction to 2009 Tristar Obak.

#85 Jackie Mitchell

Cool! An old timey minor league player with... contrails in the background?? Odd but nifty. This baby faced feller looks scrappy. I've never heard of Jackie Mitchell, so let's check the back.

Dude! The dude's not a dude! Duuuuuude!. Jackie freaking struck out Ruth and Gehrig when she was SEVENTEEN. Page two of that article adds more evidence to my theory that Kenesaw Mountain Landis is a colossal dick. Great first card to pull for a set. Things should bode well after this... shouldn't they?

#72 Lena Blackburne

Lena is portrayed by a young George C. Scott on this card. If you don't know who this guy is, take a game used MLB baseball and look at it closely. See the stuff on it? That's his mud. He's responsible for non-shiny baseballs. You can get your own dirt if you want. I'm surprised a relic card hasn't been made out of this stuff yet.

#65 Nick Lachey Mini

Let's just move on...

#88 Patrick T. Powers

This fat old robber baron looking dude was the first president of a minor league. If you thought this was the furthest away from an actual minor league player card in a minor league set, you ain't seen nothin' yet...

#81 Elias Howe

The guy who invented the Sewing Machine. No, seriously. His contribution to minor league baseball? "The advances in sewing helped lead to the mass production of baseball uniforms." Because without him. baseball would have been played stark nekkid, like ancient Greek Olympians. Which is actually a VERY good thing. Because for every Jeter or Zito heartthrob, there's a couple dozen CC Sabathias and David Wells and John Kruks and Ray Kings out there.

Aaaaand a security device, because obviously everyone would want to steal this pack. I'm sure some of you out there are absolutely horrified that a pack of 2009 Minor League baseball cards had exactly ONE GUY who was born after World War One* in the entire pack, and he was married to Jessica Simpson. Before you give up on Obak altogether, let me say that I picked up a couple more packs and did much better. Hall of Famers and legit prospects and stuff. Including this mini card:

Gene Conley, the only guy who has ever on a championship in two sports. One of those championships was with the Milwaukee Braves and I've wanted one of these cards since I first saw Mario's review with a Conley auto. This mini totally made my week when I pulled it, so don't be afraid of the Obak strangeness.
