My three favorite teams this week

I can't even watch the game, it's killing me... I turned on the radio for a minute and Brian McCann popped up with the bases loaded, two outs and a 3-1 count. AND IT WAS ALL MY FAULT 'CAUSE I TURNED ON THE RADIO. Yes, this week shall be the death of me.

Just Like a Mini Mall

This was Flea Market Weekend again, and I walked away with a very nice haul indeed. I hit two dealers. The kickass awesome best flea market guy ever who only comes to the market every other month or so and the baseball card museum guy who is there every weekend. I'm going to show off what I got slowly over the course of the week to give you all some breaks from the Gintermania.

Some stuff seen & heard at the mini mall:

My buddy Steve was back at the flea market for the first time in weeks after a long illness.

The Sports Card Alley dealer pulled a Hiroki Kuroda Rip Card out of a pack of '09 A&G. He didn't know what the heck to do with it, I suggested the flashlight cheat trick.

Some yahoo yelling out "Obama Yo Momma!"

The Baseball Card Museum Director showing off a bunch of photos he took during Spring Training 1974 that he took to a one hour photo near the ballpark and got them all signed that same day. I remember Ken Clay was one of the guys who signed, but I can't recall the rest.

One of the other dealers was playing a guitar every few minutes trying to sell the thing. One guy came up to him and requested "Clementine". There was then a five minute conversation with the guy trying to explain to the seller what the heck Clementine was and I wanted to scream "PLAY THE HUCKLEBERRY HOUND SONG YOU DOPE" so bad it hurt.

Another dealer had what appeared to be a complete 1992 The Wiz Yankee Legends set in full unripped perforated sheets. I was too scared to ask how much it was, but I looked at it longingly for quite a few minutes.

A quite impressive vintage poster of Bettie Page.

A dude who sounded exactly like Unknown Hinson. I seriously thought I was going to get to meet the King of Country Western Troubadours but alas, it wasn't he.

Here's the stuff I got from Baseball Museum guy:

More Fleer Basketball Stickers

FleerFan had a request for some more basketball stickers. I think I was able to complete a couple of sets for people today.

I didn't want to just get the stickers so I shuffled around the boxes in the store. There was a non-sports box full of crazy stuff including a Vaughn Bode promo card I wish I had bought now. I found a football grab bag that looked interesting but it's too early for football. Maybe in a couple of weeks. In one of the cases was an autograph of Gil Hodges which looked incredible. I found the 1979 Topps Don Sutton card I need for my set, but it was two bucks and had a crease. Then I saw this in the Phil Niekro section.

It is very rare that I see a Knucksie card that I've never heard of before, but this was one of them. It's black & white (obviously) is playing card size with rounded corners and has the braves cap and logo so is apparently licensed. It's a 1981 First Issue, but first issue what? Here's the back:

It's some sort of game card. this one gets you a double. I'm not sure what the 9 indicates but it probably has something to do with the gameplay. The card has a logo: Batter up! by Frank Daniell. I couldn't find anything about the card or set in my SCD catalog. I also tried Googling and Binging it and still didn't find anything about it. I did find a batting cage in Woodstock I hadn't kn0wn about before so it wasn't a total loss. It's still a pretty cool oddball card though. does anyone have any information on it?

Well look at that...

The Philadelphia 76ers' old logo...

Is their new logo.

The NBA has a long tradition of changing logos (and cities for that matter) at the drop of a hat but it's nice to see a few teams go old school every once in a while. I can still hold out hope for a return to the Atlanta Hawks' Pac-Man logo. (keep the blue unis though, those are cool)

Flea Market Finds - 6/13

Flea Market! It's just like... it's just like... A mini. MALL!

WHERE HAS THIS SONG BEEN ALL MY LIFE

I hit the flea market yesterday and walked out with three purchases totaling well under five bucks total. They were good purchases though and stuff you could very likely only find at a flea market. Here are two things I got, the third I'm going to try to get up on YouTube later tonight.

I've mentioned before that there's a booth at this particular flea market where this guy sells cards and magazines and videos of an adult flavor. I don't often go there because there is another seller that usually gets all my cash, but that guy has moved up to a market in Alabama. I stopped by the booth looking for one thing in particular: the 1983 Topps Cal Ripken Jr. card that will complete my 1983 Topps set. He had one but it was sold already. Drats! However while looking through the Ripkens I noticed a cardboard box filled with a bunch of old Fleer basketball stickers. Since there was no Ripken to buy, I decided to check out the stickers. Jackpot! Behold...

'70s Fleer Sticker Atlanta Hawks Rainbow

This. Is. AWESOME. I think these cards are from 1978-79, because the back of the stickers have a puzzle on them that show a piece of a Sonics logo, and bits of text that read "l's Large" "Crowd" "-39,4" "Seattle King Do". I'm guessing that refers to the 1978 playoff game that hosted 39,457 fans. I would have bought all of them had I unlimited funds, but I ended up getting 16 different stickers featuring some very outdated logos. This is the coolest:

It's still got the old ABA ball in the logo!

I also found a dime box from a seller who got real high pressure after I looked at some coins he was selling. I picked up three cards from the seventies instead of the $50 Matt Ryan autograph he was pushing.

I wanted to get a '76 card just because, and I chose Bruce solely for the utterly bewildered look on his face.

Somebody Night Owl did a post on the mind bending background of this card a while back and as soon as I saw it I knew that it Must Be Mine. The combination of the seats and Paul's twister delivery is classic. The next card was the key acquisition though:

Dick Pole rookie card! Plus Wayne Garland too, who wasn't a slouch. Here's the lifetime stats from the four rookies:

Wayne Garland:
9 seasons with Baltimore and Cleveland
1040 IP, 55-66 record, 3.89 ERA, 1082 hits, 328 walks, 450 Ks.
Wayne went 20-7 with a 2.67 ERA with the O's in 1976

Fred Holdsworth:
7 seasons with Detroit, Baltimore Montreal and Milwaukee
182 IP, 7-10 record, 4.40 ERA, 182 hits, 86 walks, 94 Ks.

Mark Littell:
9 seasons with Kansas City and St. Louis
532 IP, 32-31 record, 56 saves, 3.32 ERA, 416 hits, 304 walks, 466 Ks.
Mark's the guy who gave up Chambliss' homer in game 5 of the 1976 ALCS.

Dick Pole:
6 seasons with Boston and Seattle
531 IP, 25-37 record, 5.05 ERA, 607 hits, 209 walks, 239 Ks.

Ok, so none of them were All Stars or anything, but at least they all stuck around for a few years. Upon doing a reality check, it turned out I had both '74 cards already, but the Pole RC was a major upgrade from the one I had. If anyone wants a crumpled up Dick Pole rookie let me know.

The last thing I got was a $1 grab bag of baseball cards. I've bought bricks from this guy before and there's usually a lot of interesting schtuff in them. This one was no different and I videoed it so you could all share the experience. Unfortunately, it took just over 10 minutes, so if YouToob barfs I'll have to edit. It will be up later tonight though so stay tuned.

Sticky Stuff From Tribecards

I haven't posted a sticker over the weekend in a long time, so I figured why not. I got this '70s era Fleer sticker in a package from Tribecards a loooong time ago. This is a good looking sticker, the script A logo is very brightly colored and has a lot of eye appeal. That cool old '7o's logo is very comforting to me in times of trouble. Plus it's two stickers in one! I could (theoretically) peel off the A and stick it to my 70's Braves binder and then slap the Braves name logo right on my monitor so I could stare at it while blogging. I'd never actually do that however, because I've always been neurotic about protecting my sticker cards. But it's possible. I'm not sure which year this is from but the back holds an important clue:

I think this is the national flag of Namibia, but I'm not 100% on that. Never use this blog for research on your social studies project, but I think most of you knew that already. Anyway FleerFan is definitely the place to go for your Fleer Sticker Identifying needs. Like I said TribeCards sent this in a package full of weird oddball stuff a while back. I've pulled it back out and have scanned a lot of the cooler stuff to show off this week. A couple of things I didn't even know existed, so I'm talking ooooooooddball. Along with the weirdness there was a possibly complete 1993 Donruss Triple Play Braves team set, a minor league card of Glenn Williams the overhyped Australian, A Toys R' Us rookie card of Kent Mercker, '87 Topps Gene Garber, '86 Fleer checklist featuring the Braves (and Brewers, David must have deemed me more worthy than Thorzul for this card (or had two of them...)), a card that is immediately going to Dinged Corners and Marcus Giles with his fingers in his ears. Also included was a note:

Better late than never?

Indeed!

Random stuff out of the images folder

I want the Joba post off the top but am drawing a blank on what to write. Here's five random images I scanned and never used for anything, let's see how well I free associate.

It's weird, I have two of these Bowman Gold Parallel Heyward rookie prospect cards, and two of the chrome variety, but I don't have the base card. No, do not start mailing them to me, I'm just making an observation. Heyward might end up involved in a Jake Peavy trade anyway, All kinds of players' names are being thrown around like Escobar, Kelly Johnson and pretty much every decent prospect in the system. Trade 'em all for Jake, I say.

This BJ Upton mini '06 Bowman Heritage card was going to go into my Retro Rays post, but I decided to use Longoria's Bowman Heritage card instead. That set is kind of crappy looking, but the mini cards are fantastic. They look very similar to the original '49 Bowmans.

I haven't done a sticker post in ages, and I don't know when I'll do another, quite frankly. This Fleer sticker is from 1985 (I think - I'm sure I'll be corrected if not) and has a jersey instead of the usual logo or cap sticker. How fantastic is that? I think they only did one jersey per team, it would be sweet to have a sticker set with home and away unis. The really fantastic thing about this sticker is that Fleer used Phil Niekro's number - SuperAwesome. Knucksie was pitching for the Yankees when this card came out though.

Morten Anderson Rookie card. Raise your hand if he belongs in the Hall of Fame. So does Ray Guy, but the dillweed voters will never let him in, so nuke Canton. My self-imposed boycott on all things Falcon lasted five and a half games. Last weekend I ended up stuck in a situation where the game was on TV and I ended up watching the last half of the game. The Falcons looked pretty good (goal line stand baby!) and I have to admit now that the Matt Ryan Pick is not as disastrous as I thought. I'd still rather have an anchor on the D-Line for 10 years, but I'm not an NFL GM so ufck me. The game was going well, the Falcons had a 7 point week late in the game and then Jason Elam attempted a field goal to salt it away.

Brief aside here: 1) Jason Elam is a Falcon!??!!?! 2) Jason Elam is one of the best kickers in the league. 3) I looked for two hours for a damned Jason Elam card WHICH I KNOW I HAVE and couldn't find it.

Back to the story: So the field goal would basically put the Bears away, Elam is an elite kicker and of course, Elam blew it. So now there's a 6 point lead with very little time left and I knew in my guts that Chicago would march down the field for a touchdown. Which they did. Same old lousy Falcons. I watched this exact game about 50 times in the past 30 years. Stupid loser Falcons. All they needed was a makeable field goal from a good kicker and they still blew it. Now here's 11 seconds left and we're down by one. Rotten stinkbomb pathetic loser bloody Falcons. I shoulda threw a brick throw the TV screen when I first saw the game was on. Ok, let's have the clock run out and get the losing loserness over with. Then the Bears bungled the kickoff. Then Ryan threw a pass. Then Elam hit a field goal. Then the Falcons won. WHO IS THIS TEAM AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH MY CRAPPY FALCONS??

So yeah, now I'm the dumbass. I ditched my team and missed a pretty good start to the season. I'm still mad about the whole thing though, but I figured out a way to reconcile my loathing. In the fourth quarter Arthur Blank wandered out on the field as he usually does. At that moment as I was furiously flipping him the double bird, I realized that it's not the Falcons I hate, it's that goddamn stupid idiot moron meddling OWNER. So now, when I watch the Falcons game on TV next week I can cheerfully root for the Falcons, and then curse a blue streak and throw things at the screen in rage when that [insert disparaging epithet here] shows up on the sideline during the fourth quarter. Thanks Arthur! I can cheer for my team again! YOU JACKASS

This... is not a card. It's a coin. Little did you know that I used to collect coins! Well I did, and I got most of them at Northlake Stamp and Coin when I was a kid. That shop has been in the same spot in the mall for probably 20 years now and the same guy with frizzy hair is still there running the joint. I was meeting a freind over in Tucker a few months ago and while I waited for him to get off work I went back to check out the place. They also sell baseball cards and they have shelves full of old boxes way up on the top shelf of their cases. They also had a few packs, but no prices as far as I could tell. Nothing card wise caught my eye but I did see the old Bargain Box on the counter that was there that I dug through when I was 12. I can't just browse through something like that so I looked through every last coin in the box. After all that work, I couldn't just not get something, so I picked out this 1844 Large Cent for 11 bucks. It's a pretty good looking coin actually, the date is strong, most of the details are there and most importantly the LIBERTY on her crown is readable. The reason it was so cheap is that someone tried to drill the thing for some reason. It's a really nice coin and I think it's now the oldest thing in my collection. This ain't no little Lincoln penny either, the sucker is bigger than a quarter. So there you have it, an old penny. Now you all know that I am not just a collector, but a pathological packrat.

Sticky Saturday - Toon Variations

Once again I will not get the Sticky Saturday post up on the blog before the calendar actually changes to Sunday. It will appear to have been posted on Saturday though, because Blogger dates a post by when it was first opened, not when it was actually published. Deceptive victory is mine!

Here's a sticker from the 1985 Fleer set. I really like these stickers, probably because I didn't get a whole lot of Fleer cards in '85. I didn't get a whole lot of any cards in '85 to be honest. I was more interested in the coin collection my mom gave me to try to derail my obsession with cards. It didn't quite work, but it slowed me down a lot in '84 and '85. Then the '86 Topps cards with the black stripe on top showed up at McCrory's. Then I went to a card show and picked up some cards from the '60s and a box of 1986 Topps Football. It was pretty much over for me then. I still missed out on the 'scarce' Donruss and Fleer sets From '84 to '86 though. Thank God everyone let the presses run like mad in '87 so my insatiable need for cards could be quenched.

Pathological obsessions aside, the '85 set had neat stickers. After a a few years of caps, they busted out the pennants. The only problem with them is that they sometimes didn't stick all that well and if that point at the end started to come up, it was all over for that sticker. It would be ripped off the notebook within hours. The circles didn't have that problem. Circles are stickers' perfect shape. Once they are stuck on something, they stay stuck. Try to rip a circle shaped sticker off something without crunching up one side and tearing it to bits. It can't be done.

These stickers had cartoons on the back from RG Laughlin. RG is all over Fleer sets and his Famous Feats set was revised for the sitckers. This one commemorates Deacon Phillippe's 5 complete games in the 1903 World Series.

Fleer was nice enough to add card numbers to make the 22 card set easier to build. With 22 cards in the set it's obvious that some card backs would be on more than one team's sticker. That's not all though, While I had one of these in my collection already, FleerFan sent me another in a package of Braves stickers. Check out this back:

Good ol' Georgia Peach on a Braves sticker. How appropriate. So there's variations for the card backs in these cards. For all I know there couple be every card possible on any given team's card back, but of the three I have two have Deacon and one has Ty. I really like this drawing of Ty, especially the radiation coming out of his head. I figure it means one of three things:

1) Surely Ty is the Son of God.
2) Cobb's head is about to explode.
3) You better run, because Ty is pissed and he has a bat locked and loaded.

I know he was a mean, racist SOB who would beat up cripples, but I just can't help liking Ty Cobb. It goes to show I'll forgive a lot of crap if you can hit like Ty.

UPDATE: Take all the times I typed 1985 and change them to 1986. I need to stop blogging when I'm sleepy.

Sticky Saturday or Sunday whatever - Crystal Ball Edition

All Right... The non-waiver trade deadline is almost here. The Braves are under .500 but still in the race thanks to a weak NL East. They can go out and pick up an outfielder and some pitching and make a run at the pennant, or ransom Teixeira and some bullpen arms for a truckload of prospects and shoot for 2009. They are in a crucial series with the Phillies this weekend, the rubber game of which starts in about an hour. The first game they demolished the formerly front running Phils, yesterday they squandered a huge lead and suffered yet another one run road loss. What to do? Buy or sell? It's time to...

LOOK DEEPLY INTO THE CRYSTAL BALL

No not the Styx version, or the dumb Keane video, or even some new age hippie crap (although juggling is cool) I'm talking about looking into a real live crystal type ball! Of course I don't have one, so I tried the interwebs. You knew there would be a web based crystal ball amongst all the Magic 8-balls so I tried it.

Oh crystal ball, Can the Braves win the division?

Ask again tomorrow?? Stupid crystal ball. I'll have to resort to cardboard prognostication instead. Let's see what that Fleer sticker from the 80's can tell us about the 2008 Braves. I can't remember what year it's from and I don't care. I'm interested in the FUTURE not the past. Ask FleerFan. He's the one who gave me the sticker. Let's flip this puppy over and see what the future has in sto-

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NOT THE ROYALS!!! OH DEAR LORD NOT THE FRACKING ROYALS! Wait, wait, calm down. They were good back in the mid 80's... they won a World Series! They had George Brett! And then they fell in to a long stretch of losing and despair noooooooooooooooooooooo

TRADE TEX!

FIRE FRANK!

SEND FRENCHY BACK TO THE ROOKIE LEAGUE!

HAMPTON'S A WITCH, BURN HIM!

USE THE BULLPEN FOR KINDLING!

PANIC!

Sticky Saturday - More All Star Edition

Here's another sticker from that All-Star themed set I posted last week. At least I think it's from the same set, who knows. I don't remember what year it was from and I'm too lazy to look back at the post so you'll have to figure out on your own. This sticker is of the classic Major League Baseball logo featuring a batter who is about to watch a high fastball go by for a called strike. The bat's still on his shoulders for Pete's sake, he'll never be able to turn on that pitch.

This card is a case study in why you shouldn't use the copyright date to figure out what year it's from. The copyright date clearly says 1968 on the front of that card, but that's the copyright date of the logo, not the card. That's not even Fleer's copyright, that's MLB's copyright. Nobody sue me now, this is for educational purposes only.

Here we have a cartoon depicting the 1972 All Star Game in Atlanta. Yes, that's Hank Aaron, and no, he didn't go 7 for 7 in the game. He did hit a home run off Gaylord Perry in the game, and Joe Morgan came up with the game winning single in the 10th inning, making the National league a perfect 7 for 7 in extra inning games up till that time. Gotta love Hank hitting a homer in front of the home crowd. I have the program and a pennant from this game in the archives somewhere, I'll have to show 'em off some day.

Sticky Saturday - All Star Edition

Here's a couple of Braves stickers for you this week. The All Star starting lineups are being announced Sunday so why not do an All Star theme this week. The sticker on the right I had already, the one on the left I received from FleerFan. They both have a team logo and a cartoony looking cap on them. They're both basically the same except for one little detail.

The one on the right has "Puzzle on Back" on it. That's because there's a puzzle on the back. That makes sense, doesn't it? Here's the puzzle:

Looks like the puzzle is of the All Star game in Cleveland Ohio to me. That game was played in 1981 once the strike was over. So this sticker is probably from 1982. I'm not sure if they were inserted in packs of Fleer baseball cards or were their own set. Here's the other card back:

Another All Star game, this time the 1975 contest illustrated by R.G Laughlin. The NL won that game on a Bill Madlock two-run single in the 9th off Catfish Hunter. Pete Rose tacked on the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. Yaz, Jim Wynn and Steve Garvey all had homers in Milwaukee. I really like these cards illustrated by Laughlin, I just wish they were a little easier to find. Unless there were two sets of these stickers in 1982 this card has to be from 1981, as it's the first year the Braves started wearing the blue hat with the script A again. The first year I really collected Fleer cards was 1982, so these are the most recent stickers that I can still concider to be strange and exotic. Someone bring back the stickers in packs! I'm getting all nostalgic here for stickers and puzzles and 'toons now.

Sticky Sunday - Bleary eyed edition

Oh dear Lord, what the heck am I doing up at 5am blogging about stickers?? Buzzing pagers are a real pain in the keister. We're back to Fleer stickers finally after weeks of strangeness and holograms. This is one I got from FleerFan. This was the first Fleer sticker I ever saw with a blank back. All the others had stats or puzzles or cartoons or something on them. I didn't know what year this sticker was from until FleerFan explained it in this post. Blank backs are from the 1977 High-Gloss Sticker set, the first non-cloth sticker set in a while for Fleer.

This is the cap logo sticker. There's a second style sticker featuring the screaming Brave logo, but I can't find it right now so we'll stick with the cap logo for now. This is two stickers in one, you've got the Braves script logo and the cap logo A. This logo always seemed strange to me. I started following the Braves in '81 which is right when they switched over to the script A on the caps. Those uniforms always seemed to feel right to me, while the '70s style lower case A unis with the weird red pinstripes just seemed odd and creepy. Of course the '70's in general felt odd and creepy to me most of the time. The script Braves logo doesn't feel right either. The logo on the sticker is the version used with the screaming Brave full logo, just without the Brave. Check here to compare and see what I'm talking about. This logo screams '70s and I'm just an '80s kind of guy.

Thankfully the Braves have stayed pretty close to that '80's logo all these years. They ditched the Brave and added a tomahawk but it's essentially still the same. Having watched my Hawks do the logo and uniform switch every other year since the glory of the old Pac-Man Hawks logo I can honestly say that I much prefer when a team stays one logo and uniform design. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I couldn't imagine being an Arizona fan and having 5 Diamondbacks t-shirts all with different logos on them. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Then again if I were born five years earlier I'd be pining for the old red striped unis with the lower case a just like this card. Seriously though, red pinstripes?? What were they thinking? It's stuff like that that keeps me awake at night.

Sticky Saturday - Chasing Paper Edition

Here's another sticker from FleerFan featuring the Bravos. This sticker is blank on the back, so I'm not sure at all what year it's from. Sometime in the 70s I guess. Some of the first cards I ever got were stickers like these from a card/memorabilia store called the Paper Chase. They had a big bin the size of a card table with a bunch of random cards in it for a penny each. When I was about 8 or 9 I got to scrounge through it and many of the cards I chose were stickers with a similar design to these. It was a pretty big mess, piles of cards were everywhere getting dinged and bent. There were a few other kids besides me digging through it when I was there and we were all having having a ball. I think I ended up with more basketball cards and stickers than baseball cards. It could be that I just remember the basketball cards better though because they were the only ones I had for a long time. The baseball cards probably just got mixed up in the cigar box with the rest of my collection and don't stick out in my mind as a result.

My stickers had a puzzle of either a World Series or All-Star game on the back. Other than the back, everything else is the same down to the "Grand Slam High Gloss Stickers" text on the card. Like the basketball cards they were the only Fleer stickers from the '70s I had. I never found any packages of Fleer Logo stickers when I was a kid, but I didn't really pay attention to packs of cards till about 1981. By that time Fleer was probably focusing more on the cards than the stickers. I don't really remember anything else about one of my first trips - if not the first trip - to a card store other than that table with the big pile of loose cards all mixed up and the little pile of stickers I pulled out of it. I didn't get a Braves sticker back then (but three Twins stickers for some reason) so this is a nice addition to the collection.

Sticky Saturday - Recycling Edition

I would have done this earlier, but I got caught up watching my Venture Brothers DVDs. Dr. Girlfriend makes me all tingly. Tonight we have a 1980 Fleer sticker of the Oakland A's. From this sticker we can tell that Fleer's centering was just as bad on the stickers as on their regular cards, that they didn't cut the sticker all the way to the edge on the sheet and that the 1979 Swingin' A's were absolutely terrible. 54 and 108? Oy gevalt! The sad thing is they weren't even the worst team in the league - the Blue Jays went 53-109.

The back of the card doesn't feature a loser though, it has a smiling doodle of Lew Burdette fresh off of pwning the Yankees in 1957. Lew is best known for pulling pranks on Topps photographers and completely dominating the Yanks in the '57 World Series. Lew won the MVP for the series by only giving up two runs in three complete games, including shutouts in game 5 and 7. If this card design looks familiar you would be right.

While Topps had the monopoly on baseball cards with current players, Fleer still kept busy in the 70's with a bunch of oddball legends including a few series of World Series cards. The cards had a cartoon by Robert Laughlin on the front and a recap of the series on the back. Here's the '57 card from the first series done in 1970:

Lew's throwing the baffled batters some rotten eggs in the original cartoon. Fleer and Laughlin had a long collaboration together. They first put out a World Series set in 1967 that was a true oddball at 2 3/4" by 3 1/2" in size and printed in black and white. Those cartoons were reused for this 1970 set that was made standard size and printed in color. For 1971 Laughlin created new drawings for the set that were reprinted and updated with the past year's World Series until 1979. Then in 1980, the World Series got stuck on the pack of the sticker cards. You can tell the 1970 series from the later versions by the blue backs and lack of a MLB logo on the front.

These cards are fun and reasonably cheap if you can find them out there. They are especially cool for team collectors as putting together a set of World Series appearances for your favorite franchise isn't too difficult unless you're a Yankee fan. As long as we're on the subject of Lew, here's a cool old newspaper clipping sent to me by reader Billy featuring Lew and his wife Mary on the team bus before they head off to New York to take the title. Awesome find by Billy!

Sticky Saturday - Aw Jeez, I Almost Forgot Edition

Sorry guys, if I hadn't gotten woken up by a call, I would have blown off the stickers today. My sleep deprivation is your gain, 'cause today (tonight) we have a nice sticker for Opening day, a Braves sticker from 1989 Fleer.

Awww yeah. Check out the bunting. Ya got bunting front and back. The team on the fronts and backs actually match too, not something you always got with Fleer stickers. The bats design make the sticker look like a major award or something. The only award the Braves deserved from 1988 was "Worst team ever that still wasn't the absolute worst team in the league that year". Seriously, the Braves went 54-106, one of the worst records of all time, and the stinkin' Orioles managed to go 54-107 just to screw us. That's just totally not fair. We coulda lost two more games if given the chance and gone 54-108. Stupid rainouts.

How about that National League Western Division label, eh? All you noobs out there who were born after Bobby Cox started his second stint as manager of the Braves are likely perplexed by this. What the heck are the Braves doing in the Western division? That's what all us old-timers wondered too... The Braves just kinda got put out there in the west, along with the Reds, while the Cubs and Cards were in the in the Eastern division. No real rhyme or reason for it either, Cincinnati and Atlanta got stuck with the West coast road trips from 1969 to 1993, and I missed out on hating the Mets for twenty years of my life. Oh sure, I enjoyed hating the Dodgers and that fat bastard Lasorda all through the '80s, but it was never the burning loathing seething Mets rage of hate that I love so much. Oh, I am so ready for opening day, can you tell?

And check out the tons and tons of factoids! Stadium capacity! First game! (we lost) Longest game! (we lost) Milwaukee never had a losing season! (rub it in, whydoncha) Atlanta's never been to a World Series! (just you wait!!!) The retired numbers threw me for a loop, I've had it etched into my brain that we have retired 5 Braves uniform numbers, and it took me a while to realize why there was only 4 listed on the card. That's 'cause Murphy was still wearing his Braves uniform! Feeling really old now...

This is a pretty dang good sticker set from an really good Fleer set. If you can't track down the many varieties of Billy Ripken's bat handle, you might want to collect this sticker set instead. It's good looking, full of interesting outdated historical tidbits and even the mini logo sticker cards finally dumped the team name stripes and gave you 4 logo stickers per card. Murph agrees that you should stick to the G-Rated Ripken and collect this wholesome sticker set instead.

Sticky Saturday - Investigative Journalism Edition

Last week's stickers opened up a mystery. For some reason my box of 1986 Fleer Classic Minis has what appeared to be 1987 stickers in them. Plus one was missing as I only got 17 stickers in the box. The box I bought was not shrink wrapped (nor were any of the other half dozen the dealer had) so it could be a case where someone swiped the '86 stickers and replaced them with others. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense since I sorted through the actual cards and they were all there. Not one missing, not even the Canseco rookie. I bought a 1987 set at the same time though, and luckily this one was sealed tight. No one pulled a switcheroo on these stickers.

One thing that was different in that the stickers were mostly alternating upside down and right side up when I pulled them from the box. This is different from the '86 box as the first three were upside down and the rest right side up. So maybe this is more evidence that there was a switcheroo, maybe not. Here's what I got:

Mariners
Pirates
Orioles
Brewers
Angels
Indians
Giants
Cardinals
Royals
Cubs
Red Sox
Phillies
Tigers
Astros
Mets
Yankees
Expos
Yankees

One double, no Braves and they are the same red striped sticker design that I got in my other box. Looks like I did get hoodwinked. That is until I noticed something:

Aha, a clue! the cool Trident Mariners logo on the left was from the 1986 box, the boring stupid generic M's in a baseball logo on the right was in the box of '87s. I wasn't able to find a Mariners sticker from 1986, but I do have this rather beat up M's sticker from '87.

I think that card spent some significant time in a back pocket. So now we know that the M's logo was definitely used in 87, we just need to find out what they were using in 86. My 86 Fleer collection mostly came from junk lots, so I don't have too many stickers. I'll have to defer to the expert on this one.

So maybe the stickers weren't tampered with after all? Maybe Fleer used the same design for both 86 and 87? If so where did the star design come from? I won't be able to check out those other sets until at least April, but if I can snag one, I'll report my findings. In the meantime, this post has a definite lack of Braves in it, so here are a couple more from the '88 set. The Bravos share stickers with the Orioles and Tigers on these cards, and for some reason the backs showcase Busch Stadium and Wrigley Field. Next week though, you'll finally get a card where the frnt and backs match. Till next time, enjoy...

Sticky Saturday - Box Break Edition

I'm deviating from the stickers that Fleerfan sent me to provide you with an extra special Sticky Saturday. A few weeks back, Fleerfan mentioned that the only sticker he needs from the '86 mini set was the Texas Rangers. Well I knew where I could pick up a set of '86 Fleer minis and I'm going to bust it today to quench your sticker needs and hopefully find that Rangers card he needs. Obviously since this is a factory set, we won't be looking at the cards (although I may revisit them in the future) but instead, I'll be pulling the stickers. On to the box rip!

Ok I lied, Carlton was the first card I saw in the set so he gets posted because I'm a big fan of Lefty. Now on to the stickers.

Braves! Yes! First sticker even! It doesn't look like the one from the last post though, this has stripes instead of stars. Oh well, onward!

Yankees, slightly miscut causing a weird step design on the left side. Why didn't Fleer just have uniform stripes throughout the sheet? Another mid 80's trading card mystery...

Blue Jays
Mariners
Orioles
Angels - No, I'm not posting every single sticker. I'll leave that up to Fleerfan.

Giants
Royals - Note how the horizontally oriented Giants logo barely covers two stripes while the vertical Royals logo barely fits on the sticker.

Red Sox
Tigers
Mets
A's

Rangers! We got the Rangers card Fleerfan needed! Unless he needs the one with stars and not wth stripes! We'll soon find out won't we! Why am I yelling about old stickers!

Twins
Brewers
Pirates - Three awesome 80's logos that are FAR superior to the crappy boring logos of today.

Braves - Yes! Two braves in the same box, awesome! Now I can stick one to my forehead before church tomorrow.

Well, I got the Rangers card and TWO Braves, but time will tell if it was the right Rangers card.
