BLACK FRIDAY COMC PICKUPS - PART 2: HANDS OF ORLOC

ANOTHER CARD, THIS ONE'S GREAT

PETER LORRE ROOKIE CARD??? SO WHAT THE HELL IS THIS THING. I DON'T HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IDEA. THE CARD SET IS THE 1936 GALLAHER FILM EPISODES, A BRITISH CIGARETTE INSERT. I KNOW ALMOST NOTHING ABOUT BRITISH TOBACCO CARDS OTHER THAN THEY LOOK COOL. THIS CARD IS ESPECIALLY COOL SHOWING PETER LORRE AND FRANCES DRAKE IN THE FILM THE HANDS OF ORLOC, BETTER KNOWN AS MAD LOVE. THIS IS PETER LORRE'S FIRST AMERICAN FILM AND IT IS A DOOZY. PETE IS A MAD SCIENTIST WHO TRANPLANTS THE HANDS OF A STRANGLER ONTO FRANCES' PIANO PLAYING HUSBAND AND THEN SHENANIGANS ENSUE. THE FILM ALSO STARS COLIN CLIVE AKA DOCTOR FRANKENSTIEN FROM THE ORIGINAL UNIVERSAL PICTURE. IT'S ALIVE! IT'S AALLIIIIIVE!!! THAT GUY. IT ALSO FEATURES TED HEALY. HE'S THE GUY WHO TREATED MOE, LARRY, CURLY AND SHEMP LIKE DOGSHIT UNTIL THEY FUCKED OFF FROM THAT ASSHOLE AND BECAME THE THREE STOOGES. THE MOVIE IS BATSHIT CRAZY AND LORRE CHEWS SCENERY THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE THING GETTING MORE AND MORE UNHINGED BY THE SECOND. YOU SEE THE CRAZY EYES IN THIS PICTURE? THEY'RE CRAZIER IN THE ACTUAL FILM. AND AT ONE POINT HE'S IN THIS BIZZARE STEAMPUNK LOOKING OUTFIT WITH METAL HANDS AND A NECK BRACE WITH FLYING BUTTRESSES AND LOOKS LIKE A CYBORG VERSION OF THE GESTAPO AGENT FROM INDIANA JONES. IT'S GREAT BUT IF YOU GOOGLE IT YOU GET THE SONG AND THE DREW BARRYMORE FLICK

LIKE I SAID BEFORE I KNOW ALMOST NOTHING ABOUT BRITISH CIGARETTE CARDS. I RECOGNIZE SOME BRAND NAMES AND I LIKE LOOKING AT PICTURES OF THEM BUT I'VE BARELY SEEN ANY IN HAND AND DON'T REALLY HAVE A HANDLE ON WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE OR HOW THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO FEEL. THAT BEING SAID, THIS CARD IS IN ALARMINGLY GOOD CONDITION. CORNERS ARE ALL SHARP, CARD STOCK IS NOT DIRTY, IT LOOKS WAY BETTER THAN THE NORMAL CARD THAT FINDS ITS WAY INTO MY COLLECTION. I'M NOT GOING TO GO AS FAR AS TO SAY IT'S A REPRINT BECAUSE THERE IS SOME DAMAGE ON THE BACK AND THE BOTTOM EDGE IS KIND OF RAGGED AND THE PAPER STOCK IS THIN BUT FIRM. THE INK LOOKS RIGHT TOO, NOT TOO GLOSSY, THE PHOTO IS NOT BLURRY AND THERE'S A LOT OF VISIBLE LITTLE DOTS, THE BLACK BORDER AND BACK INK ALSO LOOKS SOLID. I'M JUST GOING TO ASSUME IT'S LEGIT AND I'M TOO PARANOID ABOUT CARDS IN REALLY GOOD CONDITION. DOESN'T REALLY MATTER TO ME EITHER WAY, I JUST WANTED A TRADING CARD OF PETER LORRE AND THIS IS A FANTASTIC ONE

HERE'S A GALLERY OF THE ENTIRE SET CHECK FOR YOURSELF AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK. I THOUGHT I HAD A DECENT AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSIC FILM BUT I'M NOT SURE I KNOW ANY OF THESE OTHER FILMS. LAUREL & HARDY AND THE SHIRLY TEMPLES FILMS, SURE BUT I'M DRAWING A BLANK ON ALMOST EVERYTHING ELSE. SOME OTHER ACTORS IN THE SET I'D LIKE TO GET A CARD FROM : WC FIELDS, LIONEL BARRYMORE, EDWARD EVERETT HORTON, MAE WEST, CONRAD VEIDT, IDA LUPINO, OF COURSE LAUREL & HARDY. ALSO: KATHERINE HEPBURN AND FRED MACMURRY WERE IN A FILM TOGETHER? THAT SOUNDS INTERESTING EVEN IF THE MOVIE STINKS

The whole British tobacco card thing is a complete mystery to me. I've seen complete sets from the 30's and 40's for like $15 and the cards look to be in almost perfect shape. Is some guy over there sitting on a stockpile which keeps the prices down? Anyways... for the price, I've grabbed a few sets here and there.
