You learn something new every day

I ripped a pack of 1991 Bowman the other day, and I noted how the back of the card looked really odd compared to all the other football products out on the market. The stats are almost non existent, and there's this huge wall 'o text on the back. I didn't like this at all when it first came out and I didn't buy much of it even though there was a full box of it gathering dust at the local Revco. I spent my football card money on flashy Score instead. I have all my Bowman cards from the 50's in a binder, including the football so I pulled it out and saw the back of a 1955 Bowman card:

Topps was in the Heritage game back in 1991! There's a few subtle differences, and the ink is black and green instead of blue and red, but that's the same back. I'd never seen a vintage Bowman football card at that time, so the homage was lost on me. A few of the other '55 Bowmans I've seen have play diagrams on the back along with the text, those would have been cool to see in the '91 product. Too bad Topps used the design from the '91 Bowman baseball set instead of the original '55s.

Mel Gray would look cool with a radioactive glow around him. Oh well, the Cardinals ain't in Chicago any more. You had to move along with the times back at the dawn of the modern era of card collecting. Nowadays card companies steal designs from damn near anything they want without retribution.

Rainy Day Box Break part 2

Here's the next four packs out of that most-of-a-box of '91 Bowman. Things have been busy as hell around the dayf compound so I'll probably be doling out this box veeeeerrry slooowllly. Had I known it would take me over a week to get the next four packs posted I wouldn't have started this thing. Have patience though, for good things shall come...

Pack 4:
346 Norberto Martin
234 Mark McGwire
432 Erik Pappas
238 Dana Allison
39 Ron Robinson
225 Dave Stewart
299 Hector Wagner
34 Dan Plesac
368 Julio Franco foil
30 Devon White
643 Ricky Bones
211 Bryan Harvey
523 Bill Landrum
425 Dave Smith

For a set not known for its intrinsic beauty, there are a lot of really good photos in the set. McGwire at bat is a good looking card. Eric Pappas with partly clouded skies behind him is a nice portrait. Ron Robinson and his beard are grinning broadly. The absolute best though is Dave Stewart glaring at you as he is about to chuck a fastball right at your head. Forget Shaft, Dave is one bad mother... Julio Franco continues the streak of foil Silver Slugger cards.

Pack 5:
674 Chris Sabo
510 Gary Varsho
599 Stan Javier
362 Rock Raines
172 Robert Eenhoorn
667 Rob Dibble
634 Johnny Ard
82 John Farrell
370 Alan Trammell foil
473 Charlie O'Brien
647 Tony Gwynn
349 Lance Johnson
454 Spike Owen
221 Todd Burns

Lots of fan favorites in this pack. Rob Dibble, Spuds Sabo, Rock Raines, and isn't that card of One-Dog just beautiful? There are also a lot of celebrity impersonators in this set. I still can't figure out who Todd Burns looks like though. Throw in a Trammell and Tony Gwynn and you have a winner pack.

Pack 6:
229 Dan Howitt
204 Cliff Young
392 Greg Carmona
629 Steve Hosey
582 Mark Wohlers
613 Mike Scioscia
307 Kurt Stillwell
22 Dave Stieb
696 Domingo Mota foil
355 Charlie Hough
16 Tom Henke
477 Frank Viola
268 Steve Buechele
210 Dave Winfield

Mark Wohlers rookie for the win. Everyone remembers the vaunted Glavine/Avery/Smoltz group of great young arms, but there was a second wave of young pitchers in the Braves organization. Right after those three anchored the rotation, Kent Mercker, Mike Stanton and Wohlers all showed up in the bullpen. They aren't going to end up in the Hall of Fame like Glavine and Smoltz, but it's hard to find many relief pitchers with careers as long as Mercker and Stanton. Wohlers ended up being the Avery of the bunch burning brightly before sadly falling off the map. Domingo Mota is the first non-Silver Slugger foil card. Domingo won the 1990 Player of the Year award for the Gulf Coast League and was rewarded with a portrait painted by Andrew Wyeth. Just look at those brush strokes. Dave Winfield closes out the pack nicely.

Pack 7:
526 Bob Walk
175 Torey Lovullo
45 Chris Johnson
42 Jamie Navarro
331 Chili Davis
298 Tim Spehr
626 Scott Garrelts
464 Howard Johnson
533 Colin Powell foil
431 Paul Assenmacher
654 Bip Roberts
630 Trevor Wilson
6 Willie Fraser
555 Pete Harnisch

Bob Walk by any measure is a Pittsburgh Pirate, but he pitched for the Braves when I first got really interested in baseball so He's always going to be a Brave in my eyes. This pack has the Colin Powell 4-Star General card where he's throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium. I thought this card was cool as hell, but this was back when celebrities in baseball card sets were a novelty. There's a bunch of Spring Training photos in this pack. Chris Johnson is getting his picture taken right before a nasty thunderstorm hit. I think I can see a funnel cloud in the background. Tim Spehr is in a completely deserted stadium. Paul Assenmacher kneels on a freshly mowed lawn.Trevor Wilson looks to be in the middle of Johnson's thunderstorm, you can see the tarp on the field behind him. Pete Harnish is back in the sunshine and appears to be checking out an airplane with a banner advertising "Ladies Night - 5 Cent Beer". Best card in the pack is Chili Davis. Chili has focused his complete attention on the game and not on the dude sitting next to him wearing no pants.

32 more cards for the set, about right since I had almost exactly half the set to start out with. Four more packs should be up soon.

Rainy Day Box Break - 1991 Bowman

A couple of months ago I bought up most of a box of 1991 Bowman. I ripped a few packs and saved the rest for a rainy day. Well, this weekend was about as rainy as you can get metaphorically speaking so the box came out and plastic wrappers got shredded.

1991 Bowman is a really underrated set. Ok, it's not the greatest looking set out there. Blue, orange and purple isn't the greatest color combination around and this is the set that ushered in foil stamping on Topps products. The backs are a little unorthodox too, with split stats for each team instead of career stats. Of course a quarter of the set doesn't have any stats, just a "so and so made his professional debut" blurb. The photography isn't the finest around either, most of the pictures are cheesy posted mug shots from Spring Training. So why do I like this set so much? A) it's cheap B) it's just stuffed full of rookie cards.

Check out just the guys who Beckett deems worthy to list: Thome, Mussina, Everett, Bagwell, Salmon, Boone, I-Rod, Wickman, Sanders, Gonzalez, Lofton, Lopez, Karros and some dude named Chipper. It's also got a ton of other minor rookies, all the big names from the early nineties, a Rod Carew tribute subset, some foil stamped minor leaguers who didn't do squat in the big leagues, and a card of Colin Powell all in a decent sized 704 card set. Did I mention it's cheap as all get out? I like cheap underrated boxes. Stuff like '87 Donruss, '89 Fleer (everyone live chasing the Ripken), '93 Topps Series 1 and '93 UD series two. Cheap, decent looking cards with something to chase equals fun.

This wasn't a full box when I bought it, as I had already picked out a few packs to rip, but it's about three-quarters of one. The box is already open, but it's quicker to rip than to type, so I'll post it a few packs at a time. I dug out my half-completed set too so I'll note cards that actually end up sticking in my collection (numbers in bold are ones I needed). And of course, I'll be chasing that Chipper! Here's the first three packs:

Pack 1:
350 Sammy Sosa
656 Benny Santiago
353 Bob Wickman
190 Floyd Bannister
25 Rene Gonzalez
624 Mark Leonard
441 Stan Spencer
7 John Olerud
376 Eddie Murray foil
65 Charles Nagy
62 Tom Candiotti
169 Jesse Barfield
41 Greg Brock
216 Terry Steinbach

Future Hall of Famer Slammin' Sammy in a Sox uni is a nice way to start off. Just as Hall of Fame voters are slowly starting to realize that the deflated stats of the 70's and 80's were a product of the times and should be judged accordingly, the inflated stats of the 90's and 00's will also be judged for what they were. No, the juicers weren't trying to ruin the game and desecrate hot dogs apple pie and chevrolet and sell your momma to the communists. They were trying to get an edge at playing baseball. It may take thirty or forty years, but it'll happen.

Three cards in and I get the first Beckett 'hit' a Bob Wickman Rookie card. I didn't remember he was drafted by the Sox. The foil card in the pack is an Eddie Murray card commemorating his Silver Slugger award from his fantastic 1990 campaign. I'd list all his feats but it would take too long. I'll scan the back instead. I like Barfield's card, Jesse is stylin down in Tampa.

Pack two:
46 Willie Randolph
366 Frank Thomas
442 Larry Walker
363 Brian Drahman
208 Ruben Amaro
391 Jamie Moyer
160 Willie Smith
267 Jeff Russell
378 Matt Williams foil
101 Bob Milacki
658 Jerald Clark
173 Bernie Williams
192 Scott Lewis
479 Kevin McReynolds

A nice threesome to start the pack, Willie, Big Hurt and Larry. Then we get Brian Drahman looking like a toad with a mullet. Jamie Moyer is pitching for the Cardinals back when he was only 38 years old. Jeff Russel has a big black splotch embedded in the cardboard that shows up on the front as a big bump. You don't get cards like that anymore. Matt Williams gets a foil card for his silver slugger award. Best card in the pack is Bernie Williams and his amazing glasses.

Pack 3:
646 Jim Presley
261 Brett Boone
571 Otis Nixon
249 Dave Fleming
329 Paul Abbot
138 Mark Leiter
220 Curt Young
423 Jesse Hollins
4 Rod Carew Tribute
614 Eddie Murray
224 Don Peters
603 Jay Howell
41 Greg Brock
216 Terry Steinbach

Second rookie hit pops up in Brett Boone. The two cards that book so far are for players I don't like, but I don't mind 'cause I got OTIS MY MAN! This card of Otis Nixon probably came out the same time he got suspended for the booger sugar but even that can't bring me down off my early 90's high. After a few forgettable players we get Jessie Hollins giving me the same look a Tennesee prison guard tried to spook me with one time. He gave me this spiel "How does it FEEL goin' through a door where you go IN but you don't come OUT" which was ridiculous because I was only there to fix the Cisco router. Oh, that was a fun day I'll tell ya. ON a happier note, we get our first Rod Carew and another Eddie Murray card. Unfortunately we end up with another Jay Howell and his shit eating grin. Every single old set I've ripped a pack from lately nets me a Jay Howell card and I'm sick of it. Go 'way Jay! Terry Steinbach and Greg Brock are the first two doubles pulled which is slightly disconcerting. All told, 23 needed and 19 doubles in the first three packs.

I'll have the next four packs up soon unless Jesse locks me away for good.
