Joy of a (mostly) completed series: 2003 Topps Garbage Pail Kids

The original goal for my GPK collection was to only collect the original 15 series, but this set of 2003 "New" series (AKA series 16) fell into my lap so what the heck. It's not technically complete because I'm missing two name variants but it's close enough in my book. I've got a couple extra near sets if anyone wants 'em.

Gotta admit this is a hell of a first page for their comeback set. Lots of interesting ways of torturing the kids and I really admire Topps for turning their lamest card from the 1988 Dinosaur Attacks! set into a dang funny GPK card.

The bodily fluids start a-flowin and we get one of the creepier cards in the set with Victoria's Secret

The parody of the famous Japanese painting that I can't remember the name of right now floored me when I saw it.

Snot is my least favorite GPK trope and it's a flowin' freely on this page but Fartin' Martin makes up for it.

Not sure how Troy Destroy didn't become the new flagship character of the set. Harry Potty should have been the cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Joy of a Completed Series - 1986 Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 4

Time to take out the Garbage! I've been working some angles on my Garbage Pail Kids set and have managed to finish up some series. I don't exactly have all the cards with both A & B variations, but I do have at least one of every design from series 3 through 9 except for two cards. As long as I fill up a 9 pocket page I'm happy for now. All the other series, I got bupkis, but hey, they'll turn up sometime. Time to show off some sets! Tonight I have Series 4 which has my favorite card from the entire run. #138a Alien Ian. Series 4 runs from card 125 to 166 so enjoy some bonus cards from series 3 and 5 as well.

This might actually be my favorite series of the set! Not the scandalous Reese Pieces variation that snuck through legal before it was replaced. It ain't worth nothing but it's kinda subversive if you're a 12 year old.

Joy of a Completed Series - 1986 Garbage Pail Kids Series 6

Kids today have their Angry Birds and Justin Beiber and crap like that, but when I was a kid in the good ol' days we had quality entertainment. Like Pac-Man and Michael Jackson. Classy stuff. We also had our share of lame fads, like Cabbage Patch Kids. One year every girl at school had one of those ugly ass things that looked like a nylon panty stuffed with cotton balls with eyeballs stapled on. Lame fads bring about brilliant parodies however. Back when Topps was cool, they came up with a trading card set that mocked the dolls and pissed everyone's parents off. Garbage Pail Kids.

When I was a kid I went through a brief lull in card collecting in 1984-85 so I sadly missed out on the scarce Series 1 and 2. I bought these things up with a vengeance in 1986 when Series 3 came out. I continued to do so through 1987 and snapped up most of the set through Series 9. For some reason I never bought any Series 6 packs though. Maybe I lost interest for a bit, Maybe I was too obsessed with baseball and football cards, maybe the local Kay-Bee toys where I got most of my packs never got that series. Recently a completed Series 6 set finally fell in my lap, so why not show it off?
Series 6 runs from card number 207 to 250, so enjoy a sample from Series 5 and 7 as well.

So did these cards piss off my parents? Nope. My mom is a ninja wizard jedi and never let my weirdness shenanigans faze her at all. But they did enrage my aunt, however... Holy schnikes did Stoned Sean set her off! Bahaha! Nothing better than youthful rebellion. Maybe that's why I'm still rebelling in my 40's.

Joy of a Completed Series - 1972 Topps Series 1

Hey Night Owl - it can be done. 1972 Topps Series 1 and 2 are now complete. Time to attack Series 3. You can complete this thing, you just gotta complete it in chunks. Here's my Series 2 scans if you want '72 Topps Overload this morning. I'll explain how I got here this evening.

Ok, so Series 6 is gonna be a Beeyotch. I'll worry about that later!

Joy of a Completed Series

Taking the Joy of a Complete Page theme to the next level tonight. One of the collecting epiphanies I've had recently is that while trying to complete a set that is older than I am is an enormously daunting task, attempting to build a complete series from the same set is far more manageable and less intimidating. Back before Topps went to a single 660 card set that was released all at once in 1974, Topps sold their cards in multiple series throughout the year. Each series was usually between 66 and 132 cards in size and would be released steadily as the season progressed. The set would consist of about 6 or 7 series and inevitably one or two would end up harder to find than the rest because they didn't sell very well or was released very early or very late in the year when demand wasn't high. Anyone who has tried to track down a scarce high numbered card for their team set knows how big of a pain these cards can be. Set collectors - especially of sets with ridiculously tough high numbers like 1952, 1961 and 1972 Topps - can pretty much forget about it when commons in the high series are pricier than Hall of Famers in the low series. But the low series... well those cards can be downright easy to find.

Once I came to the realization that a set collector did not necessarily have to collect the entire set, I decided on a plan of action. Step 1: get together wantlists for every Topps set of the Vintage Series Era. Step 2: break the wantlists down by series for each year. Step 3: Figure out which of the card series I was closest to finishing. Step 4: pick out three of  the ones where I was close and focus on completing those series. The three I picked out were from two of my favorite sets: 1965 Topps Series 1, 1972 Topps Series 1 and 1972 Topps Series 2. I would have also picked a series from 1960 Topps, but I do not yet have at least 50% of any series in that set, which was one of the guidelines I placed on myself. 1960 Topps Series 1 is dang close though and I'll probably add that to the binder soon. actually I just realized that if I include the cards in my Braves team set I have about 55% of 1960 Series 1 so it's going in the binder. The binder now has a little more the same amount of room in it now, because with the acquisition of a 1972 Denny McLain card, my '72 Topps Series 2 series is complete. Out of the unfinished binder and into the completed binder with a brief detour through my scanner. If your fondest wish has always been to see a completed series of 1972 Topps, well guess what chief? You can die happy now!

Behold: 1972 Topps Series Two #133-264

Eagle eyed vintage freaks may have noticed a couple of very strange printing errors in there. A couple of you may have gotten overly excited upon seeing them. Note that they are 1) not for trade period and 2) I will gladly scan them for you at whatever resolution you want if you wish. I got those weirdos back in the mid-eighties in some common bricks back when they were worthless printing errors and not worthless rare printing errors and I have a soft spot for the weirdos.

If you've read this far please choose what will be the 4th series to go in the series binder by voting at the poll up top. Choose as many sets as you wish. I've got my own favorites but I wouldn't mind some input from the readers.
