BLACK FRIDAY COMC PICKUPS - PART 71: SCULLY

IT'S STILL HALLOWEEN IN OUR HEARTS, JUST IGNORE THE CHRISTMAS MUSIC

2016 TOPPS GARBAGE PAIL KIDS PRIME SLIME TRASHY TV OPEN SCULLY

GARBAGE PAIL KIDS WERE ANOTHER THING I SEARCHED FOR IN VAIN ON COMC BUT I WAS LOOKING AT FIRST SERIES CARDS AND THEY WERE ALL TOO RICH FOR MY BLOOD. OH WHY COULDN'T I HAVE FOUND THESE THINGS AT KAY-BEE TOYS TWO SERIES EARLIER. SUPER LATE IN MY BINGE I HAD SOMETHING LIKE 89 CENTS LEFT IN MY ACCOUNT AND I WAS TRYING TO FIND SOMETHING TO SPEND ALL OF IT, EVERY PENNY, AND HAVING NO LUCK.THERE NEEDS TO BE A SEARCH OPTION FOR A CERTAIN DOLLAR AMOUNT THAT WILL PULL UP JUST CARDS OF THAT EXACT PRICE. I STARTED SEARCHING EVERYTHING I EVER LIKED TRYING TO FIND SOMETHING PERFECT TO CAP OFF THE SPENDING. X-FILES WAS ONE SUCH SEARCH, AND I WAS HOPING TO FIND A NICE CARD OF DANA SCULLY. THAT DEFINITELY HAPPENED, JUST NOT IN THE WAY I THOUGHT IT WOULD

I LOVE THE X-FILES. IT'S GOT A NICE MIX OF GOOFY MONSTERS AND MIND BENDING CONSPIRACY NONSENSE. I WAS A FAN OF WEIRD POP-CULTURE OCCULT STUFF LIKE IN SEARCH OF AND CHARIOTS OF THE GODS AND THOSE TIME-LIFE MYSTERIES OF THE UNKNOWN BOOKS WHEN I WAS A KID AND THIS WAS THE COOL 90S VERSION OF ALL THAT NONSENSE. ALIENS AND CRYPTIDS AND SEXY COPS, OH MY! IT WAS A FUN WATCH AND NOT SO PLOT HEAVY THAT YOU COULDN'T GO OUT DRINKING WITH YOUR FRIENDS EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE AND MISS AN EPISODE WITHOUT GETTING COMPLETELY LOST. I ESPECIALLY LIKED THAT SOME EPISODES WERE MYSTERIES, SOME WERE HORROR AND SOME WERE JUST GOOFY. THERE WAS A LOT OF VARIETY THERE. I SAW THIS CARD AND KNEW I HAD TO GET IT JUST BECAUSE THE ALIEN FROM JOSE CHUNG'S FROM OUTER SPACE WAS THE ONE HIDING IN THE SCULLY SUIT

MY VINTAGE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS COLLECTION IS PRETTY GOOD, ESPECIALLY AFTER GRITZ DROPPED A LARGE LOAD OF HIS DOUBLES ON ME EARLIER THIS YEAR. NEWER GPKS ARE A BIT MORE HIT AND MISS. I GOT ONE COMPLETE SET BY ACCIDENT IN A NON-SPORTS LOT AND BOUGHT ENOUGH PACKS TO COME CLOSE TO COMPLETING A COUPLE OTHERS BUT MOSTLY I'VE JUST GOTTEN SOME RANDOM PACKS HERE AND THERE AND NONE AT ALL IN ABOUT FIVE YEARS. I THINK WITH NEW GPKS I SHOULD FORGET ABOUT THE SETS AND JUST PICK UP ONES THAT REALLY SPEAK TO ME. A WHILE BACK I NABBED THIS COOL FRANK ZAPPA STICKER. THIS CARD IS CERTAINLY ONE THAT IS RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS. I SHOULD ALSO PROBABLY TRADE OR SELL ALL THE OLD DOUBLES I HAVE SO I CAN GO GET SOME OF THOSE NEW CARDS. BUT THAT WOULD TAKE WORK AND WHO'S GOT TIME FOR THAT

HEY KIDS, COMICS: FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2023

SUNDAY BLOGS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE SET ASIDE FOR POSTING RECORDS AND COMICS AND OTHER NON-CARD STUFF BUT INSTEAD I USED MY SUNDAYS FOR BEING LAZY AND NOT POSTING ANYTHING. THE DAYS OF SLOTH HAVE REJUVINATED ME AND I'M HERE ON A SUNDAY MORNING LISTENING TO A MARX BROTHERS PODCAST AND DOING SOME BLOGGERY ACTIVITY. YESTERDAY WAS FREE COMIC BOOK DAY AND I WENT WITH THE KIDS TO MOOCH SOME GOODIES AND PICKED UP A LIL SUMTHIN FOR MYSELF. I WAS TARGETING FOUR SPECIFIC COMICS AND MANAGED TO FIND THREE OF THEM. THE ONE I COULDN'T FIND WAS THE FANTAGRAPHICS FREE COMIC AND I HAVE HONESTLY NEVER EVER EVEN ONCE FOUND THAT COMIC ON FCBD SO I WASN'T TOO DISAPPOINTED. I HAVE A BUNCH OF THE ORIGINAL FABULOUS FREAK BROTHERS COMICS AND AN ANTHOLOGY SO IT'S NOT REALLY A BIG DEAL. HERE'S THE ONES I DID PICK UP

MAD BALLS VS GARBAGE PAIL KIDS  - DYNAMITE

MY INITIAL THOUGHT WAS NO WAY THIS COMIC WASN'T TRASH BUT I CAN'T PASS UP ON ANYTHING WITH ADAM BOMB ON IT. AND TO BE FAIR, TRASH IS KINDA THESE CHARACTERS' RAISON D'ETRE. THIS IS ALSO AN EXTREMELY 80S MASH UP WHICH SEEMS ODD TO MARKET TO KIDS, BUT THANKS TO STUFF LIKE STRANGER THINGS AND GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY KIDS LOVE 80S KITSCH. I'M SURE A BUNCH OF OLD GEEZERS LIKE ME PICKED IT UP AS WELL. SO, IS IT ANY GOOD?

IT'S FINE. THERE'S AN ORIGIN STORY WHERE A FAMILY OF YUPPIE SCUM MOVE INTO A NEW HOUSE RIGHT BETWEEN THE MADBALL HOUSE AND THE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS HOUSE AND THE KIDS GET TO MEET ALL THE LICENSED CHARACTERS. ONCE WE'VE INTRODUCED EVERYONE WE HAVE A SECOND STORY WHERE THE GANG SHOWS OFF THEIR SCIENCE FAIR EXPERIMENTS AND SHENANIGANS ENSUE. THEN THERE'S A FEW ACTIVITY PAGES WITH A MAZE AND A WORD SCRAMBLE BEFORE WE GET TO ALL THE ADS. THE BEST BIT FOR ME WAS THE INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST AND WRITER. IT'S BASIC BUT FUN AND I CAN SEE IT CHANGING AN IMPRESSIONABLE WEIRD 8 YEAR OLD'S LIFE JUST LIKE PLOP! DID FOR ME A MILLION YEARS AGO. IT'S A TOY ADVERTISEMENT, BUT THEY'RE FUN TOYS SO WHO CARES

TOM HOLLAND'S FRIGHT NIGHT - AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY PRODUCTIONS

A COMIC BASED ON THE GREAT 80S MOVIE, THIS ONE CAUGHT MY EYE BECAUSE I HAVE READ THE ORIGINAL
FRIGHT NIGHTS COMIC FROM THE 80S AND IT'S GREAT. A NICE COMBO OF COMEDY AND HORROR WITH A FUN CARTOONY STYLE. I SAW THIS ONE ON THE FREE COMIC BOOK DAY PAGE AND WAS SUPER EXCITED BECAUSE THE COVER AT LEAST REALLY CAPTURES THE VIBE OF THE ORIGINAL. SO, IS IT ANY GOOD?

MAYBE? LESS THAN HALF THE COMIC IS ACTUAL COMICS AND HALF OF THAT IS A FLASHBACK SEQUENCE DRAWN BY NEIL VOKES WHO WAS AN ARTIST ON THE ORIGINAL 80S COMIC. THE REST IS INTERVIEWS WITH THE ARTISTS, WRITER, AND DIRECTOR OF THE FILM, A PREVIEW OF TOM HOLLAND'S SPIN OFF NOVEL, ADS FOR MORE FRIGHT NIGHT COMICS AND SOME COOL SKETCH PAGES FROM VOKES. THE FLASHBACK SEQUENCE IS BASICALLY A CLIFF'S NOTES VERSION OF THE FILM AND THE NEW STORY THAT BOOKENDS IT ISN'T FLESHED OUT VERY WELL OTHER THAN THERE'S A HOT VAMPIRE CHICK WITH BATWINGS SO THERE REALLY ISN'T ENOUGH HERE TO JUDGE IT PROPERLY.  I HONESTLY PREFER THE ORIGINAL ART STYLE TO THE NEW ART STYLE BUT THAT'S PROBABLY JUST ME BEING AN OLD CURMUDGEON. THE NEW STYLE SUITS THE VAMPIRE VIBE A LITTLE BETTER THOUGH

THE EXTRA MATERIAL IS PRETTY FANTASTIC ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIKE THE FILM. I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY PUBLISHER AND WHEN I CHECKED THEM OUT I DISCOVERED THEY DO A BUNCH OF OTHER HORROR TITLES AND A LOT OF LICENCED STUFF LIKE EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AND THE THREE STOOGES WHICH IS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY. AS A COMIC IT'S OK, BUT AS AN ADVERTISEMENT IT'S FANTASTIC WHICH IS THE WHOLE POINT OF FREE COMIC BOOK DAY WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT

I'M ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN THE COMIC BOOK VERSION OF ONE OF PETER VINCENT'S FAKE MOVIES FROM THE FILM, ORGY OF THE DAMNED. THAT LOOKS LIKE A REAL HOOT

FRAZETTAVERSE - OPUS

FRANK FRAZETTA'S ART IS FANTASTIC AND HAS BEEN A STAPLE OF COMIC BOOKS FOR DECADES. I FOUND A COUPLE OTHER NEW COMICS WITH FRANK'S ART ON THE COVER WHILE BROWSING AROUND DR. NO'S YESTERDAY. THIS COMIC I HAD HEARD OF BEFORE, THE BASIC GIST IS THAT THEY ARE ADAPTING COMIC STORIES OUT OF CLASSIC FRAZETTA PAINTINGS. A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS BUT FRAZETTA'S PICTURES ARE WORTH WHOLE-ASS COMIC SERIES. THERE WEREN'T MANY OF THESE LEFT AND I WAS LUCKY TO SNAG ONE. SO, IS IT ANY GOOD?

HELL YEAH IT'S GOOD! THERE ARE THREE STORIES IN HERE BASED ON FRAZETTA PAINTINGS. THE FIRST ONE IS BASED ON DEATH DEALER. A VIKING LOOKING DUDE ASKS A SKULL WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AND GETS A QUICK SUMMARY OF THE GIGANTIC MESS THE DEATH DEALER GOT HIMSELF INTO. THERE ARE WITCHES AND A WIZARD AND A BIG-ASS DRAGON AND EVERYONE JOINS TOGETHER IN A D&D AVENGERS SETUP TO FIGHT HELL OR SOMETHING. IT LOOKS RAD AND IS AN EXCELLENT TEASER FOR THE COMICS

NEXT UP IS FRAZETTA'S INTERPRETATION OF MOTHMAN. A SPACESHIP MOTHMAN ACCIDENTALLY CRASHES RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A METH DEALER WAR. THIS PREVIEW SHOWS WAY MORE OF THE METHHEADS THAN THE MOTHMENS BUT IT REALLY DOES WHET MY APPITITE FOR MORE CRYPTIDS. OR IS IT ALIENS? THE SERIES COMES OUT IN MAY SO YOU'LL HAVE TO PICK UP AN ISSUE TO FIND OUT

LAST STORY IS BASED ON DAWN ATTACK. A MIX OF FANTASY AND SCI-FI SHENANIGANS, A VALKYRIE SPACE PRINCESS FIGHTS A GORILLA MONSTER. NOT MUCH MORE TO THIS ONE BUT IT LOOKS COOL. THIS IS EASILY THE THICKEST FREE COMIC I SAW AND THERE'S WAY MORE COMICS THAN ADS. IF YOU LIKE FRAZETTA IT'S WORTH TRACKING DOWN

I HAD A NICE FUN SUCCESSFUL FREE COMIC RUN AND ALSO PICKED UP A NICE BOOK ABOUT WC FIELDS AND RESCUED A FEW COMICS FROM THE DOLLAR BOXES. MAYBE I'LL GET AROUND TO POSTING THOSE ANOTHER DAY. YOU ALL ENJOY YOUR SUNDAY AND MAYBE READ A BOOK AND LISTEN TO RECORD AND GET SOME RELAXING IN

Friday Night Video - Cards & Comix

The comix bit is done by 1:30 so don't get skeered off. Have a pack of Panini Cooperstown and GPK Chrome.

I've been slackass on my videos lately so I'll try to make this a more frequent thing if you like it.

Here's that thrift shop vinyl find if you're interested...

oh yass... Wandy Carlos  Moog goodness

Joy of a (mostly) completed series: 2003 Topps Garbage Pail Kids

The original goal for my GPK collection was to only collect the original 15 series, but this set of 2003 "New" series (AKA series 16) fell into my lap so what the heck. It's not technically complete because I'm missing two name variants but it's close enough in my book. I've got a couple extra near sets if anyone wants 'em.

Gotta admit this is a hell of a first page for their comeback set. Lots of interesting ways of torturing the kids and I really admire Topps for turning their lamest card from the 1988 Dinosaur Attacks! set into a dang funny GPK card.

The bodily fluids start a-flowin and we get one of the creepier cards in the set with Victoria's Secret

The parody of the famous Japanese painting that I can't remember the name of right now floored me when I saw it.

Snot is my least favorite GPK trope and it's a flowin' freely on this page but Fartin' Martin makes up for it.

Not sure how Troy Destroy didn't become the new flagship character of the set. Harry Potty should have been the cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Joy of a Completed Series - 1986 Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 4

Time to take out the Garbage! I've been working some angles on my Garbage Pail Kids set and have managed to finish up some series. I don't exactly have all the cards with both A & B variations, but I do have at least one of every design from series 3 through 9 except for two cards. As long as I fill up a 9 pocket page I'm happy for now. All the other series, I got bupkis, but hey, they'll turn up sometime. Time to show off some sets! Tonight I have Series 4 which has my favorite card from the entire run. #138a Alien Ian. Series 4 runs from card 125 to 166 so enjoy some bonus cards from series 3 and 5 as well.

This might actually be my favorite series of the set! Not the scandalous Reese Pieces variation that snuck through legal before it was replaced. It ain't worth nothing but it's kinda subversive if you're a 12 year old.

Joy of a Completed Series - 1986 Garbage Pail Kids Series 6

Kids today have their Angry Birds and Justin Beiber and crap like that, but when I was a kid in the good ol' days we had quality entertainment. Like Pac-Man and Michael Jackson. Classy stuff. We also had our share of lame fads, like Cabbage Patch Kids. One year every girl at school had one of those ugly ass things that looked like a nylon panty stuffed with cotton balls with eyeballs stapled on. Lame fads bring about brilliant parodies however. Back when Topps was cool, they came up with a trading card set that mocked the dolls and pissed everyone's parents off. Garbage Pail Kids.

When I was a kid I went through a brief lull in card collecting in 1984-85 so I sadly missed out on the scarce Series 1 and 2. I bought these things up with a vengeance in 1986 when Series 3 came out. I continued to do so through 1987 and snapped up most of the set through Series 9. For some reason I never bought any Series 6 packs though. Maybe I lost interest for a bit, Maybe I was too obsessed with baseball and football cards, maybe the local Kay-Bee toys where I got most of my packs never got that series. Recently a completed Series 6 set finally fell in my lap, so why not show it off?
Series 6 runs from card number 207 to 250, so enjoy a sample from Series 5 and 7 as well.

So did these cards piss off my parents? Nope. My mom is a ninja wizard jedi and never let my weirdness shenanigans faze her at all. But they did enrage my aunt, however... Holy schnikes did Stoned Sean set her off! Bahaha! Nothing better than youthful rebellion. Maybe that's why I'm still rebelling in my 40's.

ELECTION NIGHT SPECIAL

Ok. Everyone's sick of politics. I was sick of politics in January. There's been non stop sniping mudslinging lying scratching spitting clawing partisan nonsense going on for as long as I can remember. And that's just the Mike Trout vs Miguel Cabrera MVP argument. The Presidential campaign has been even worse!

So a buncha people went out today to vote for their guy. Problem is 50% of the country thinks the other guy sucks. If Obama wins then the values of our country will go down the tubes. Socialist big government Kenyan Muslims will sent America straight into the Garbage can. And if Romney wins the corrupt lying racist whackjobs will take over the country. Not only that, but the warmongers will get their chance to Attack Iran! No matter who wins tonight, tomorrow all your Facebook feeds will be covered with ERMAHGERD TEH CUNTREE IZ DOOOOMED!

Yeah. It sucks. But let us not get down! The campaign is over! The election is here! The recounts and legal battles will only take a couple more months! THIS IS A HAPPY OCCASION! Let us celebrate with Trading cards! Every time a candidate wins a state, I'll post a card from one of my favorite sets ever!

When Obama wins a state I'll post a Garbage Pail Kid Card, since he's sunk America into the trash according to Fox News.

When Romney wins a state I'll post a Mars Attacks card because of all the death and destruction his Presidency will wreak upon the world according to Daily Kos.

If they tie, um, I guess I'll post this?

I have no cable! so states will be posted sporadically! If at all! I'll be drinking tonight. A LOT. Enjoy!

A totally inappropriate card for today

For some reason I just felt like posting a Garbage Pail Kid. Not sure why I chose this one.

Remember kiddos - DO CARDS, NOT DRUGS.

And send me a scan of the wrapper with that slogan on the back because I've been looking for it for over five years and I still haven't found it.

I LOVE YOU TOPPS

After being pleasantly surprised with a pack of Garbage Pail Kids Flashback cards, I decided what the heck and ponied up for another pack. Inside that pack were my three favorite GPKs ever.

ADAM Bomb

Alien IAN

New Wave DAVE

In the same pack!!!!!

I am collecting this now. The whole ruddy set. Both name variations. A contributing factor is that the puzzle back cards are set up properly so the puzzle is completed when you put the cards in 9 pocket pages. The little details like that win me over, man. Even the garishly obnoxious borders are growing on me. Good show, Topps.

Absolutely No Freaking Baseball Day - Garbage Pail Kids

Got this beaut in that big package of wax packs from Zman. I'm not crazy about the new series of GPK, it seems like most of them go overboard on the snot and gore. It's nice to see one that utilizes classic humor.

Movies I'm watching tonight

Halloween is finally here! I've got a comfy couch, a case of Diet Dew, a bag of candy and a pile of DVD's. Here's the movie lineup for tonight:

Always start off with a classic. No, not the first one, Jaws 2. Here sharky, sharky! Eat the yummy powerline! Zzzzzzzzap!

Next up something silly. How about Arachnophobia. Any movie with John Goodman is a good movie.

Let's change the pace with a nice Bergman film. Well, crap! The DVD's scratched! Back to Netflix for you. We'll watch this instead.

Can't have all Hallow's Eve without Joel & the Bots. Here, you can watch too! Wait, this is one with Mike! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Ok, time for one of the best movies of all time. And I don't mean that overblown shite by Peter Jackson that desperately needed just one editor. The Good Version.

Ahhh, denouement. That was fun. Time to slip into something more comfortable. No, I'm not planning to watch the movie, I normally dress like this. Oh if you insist. Let's do the Time Warp again!

More Skeery Monsters

Here's some more monsters for you to celebrate Halloween. These monsters come from my collection of old Garbage Pail Kids stickers.

Duncan here is one of the first emos, carving himself so he can feel. He needs a lot of work on his goth look though.

RAWR! Frankenstein squish cat! Ingenious placing of the neck bolts since none of these kids have any necks.

Real werewolves don't wear diapers. They let their wolfy nethers flap in the breeze while ravaging the populace. The bat flying in front of the moon is the closest thing I have to a vampire card. There has to be one of these things named BELLE LUGOSI out there somewhere.

This homage to the Mars Attacks! set is one of my absolute favorite trading cards ever. It's a shame Tim Burton screwed up the movie so badly.

Where'd you get your information from, huh? You think that you can front when revelation comes? I'm pretty sure this dude's in Revelations somewhere.

Everyone flipped out over the Sopranos ending and Topps had it nailed way back in the 80's. Tony's dead baby, but don't stop believin... In the movie he comes back as a ZOMBIE!
