BLACK FRIDAY COMC PICKUPS - PART 60: RONALDS

WHILE I HAD CHOICE PARALYSIS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH TRAE YOUNG CARD TO PICK UP, I DID NOT HAVE THAT PROBLEM WITH RONALD ACUÑA JR. I KEYED IN ON THREE CARDS I REALLY LIKED AT SUPER CHEAP PRICES. AND THEN WHEN I WENT TO BUY THEM, ONE HAD ALREADY BEEN YANKED OUT FROM UNDER ME. I REGROUPED AND CHOSE A DIFFERENT CARD THAT WAS PRICED LESS  AND IT ENDED UP ALLOWING ME TO PICK UP A REALLY COOL CARD LATER. SILVER LININGS, EH? PLUS I HONESTLY CANNOT EVEN REMEMBER WHICH CARD IT WAS ANYMORE. MAYBE IT'LL POP UP AGAIN THIS YEAR. HERE ARE THE THREE RONALDS THAT MADE IT IN MY ORDER

2021 TOPPS 582 MONTGOMERY CLUB SET 4 RONALD ACUÑA

THIS WAS THE ALTERNATE RONALD. I STILL CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME REMEMBER WHICH ONE I MISSED OUT ON. MAYBE IT WAS THAT SUPER SEVENTIES SET WITH THE MASHUP OF 70S DESIGNS? AT ANY RATE THIS CARD WAS FIVE CENTS CHEAPER. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE 582 CLUB EXCLUSIVE CARDS YOU HAVE TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY IN ORDER TO EVEN BE ALLOWED TO BUY THE CARDS SO YOU CAN DUMP THEM FOR UNDER A BUCK A YEAR LATER. I SURE THEY GOT SOMETHING ACTUALLY COOL AND RARE THAT US PLEBIANS CANNOT HAVE BUT I'M FINE WITH THE DREGS. THIS IS AN ODD LOOKING CARD BUT IS BASED ON THE 1951 TOPPS TEAM CARDS SET WHICH IS ALSO HORIZONTAL, BLACK AND WHITE WITH 1991 FLEER BORDERS. I'VE ONLY ACTUALLY SEEN ONE OF THOSE CARDS TWICE IN PERSON SO EVEN A FACSIMILE IS PRETTY COOL TO ME. RONALD IS DOING THE 'STRAW THAT STIRS THE DRINK' CELEBRATION THE BRAVES USED FOR A COUPLE MONTHS IN 2021. IT'S NICE WHEN CARDS CAPTURE LITTLE MEMORIES LIKE THIS

THE BACKS ARE KINDA BORING. JUST AN AD FOR THEIR EXCLUSIVE BIG RICH WHALES CLUB AND ABSOLUTELY NO INFORMATION OTHER THAN THIS IS A LOST DESIGN FROM THE VAULT. IT'S NOT LOST! IT'S JUST A SCARCE ISSUE! FROM A YEAR THAT TOPPS HAS DISAVOWED SINCE THEY HAVE TO HYPE UP 1952 TOPPS ALL THE TIME!

2020 PANINI PRIZM RONALD ACUÑA INSTANT IMPACT

WHO NEEDS LOGOS WHEN YOU GOT ALL THIS OTHER SHIT GOING ON. RONALD IS THROWING AND SWINGING AND THE USS ENTERPRISE IS GOING INTO WARP 10 IN THE BACKGROUND AND THERE'S GIGANTIC TEXT WITH THE INSERT NAME AT THE TOP AND MY SENSES ARE OVERWHELMED. IF THIS WAS A REFRACTOR PRIZM CARD I MIGHT NOT SURVIVE THE AWESOME. GOOD THING I'M CHEAP. NOT GONNA LIE I'M GOING TO MISS PANINI INSERTS WHEN THE FANATICS OVERLORDS MURDER THEM OFF FOR GOOD

THE BACKS STILL AIN'T GREAT BUT AT LEAST THERE'S SOMETHING ON THEM UNLIKE THE CLUB CARDS

2020-21 TOPPS 582 MONTGOMERY CLUB SET 1 RONALD ACUÑA

OK SO I THINK THIS SET IS ON AN ALTERNATE UNUSED DESIGN FOR 1979 TOPPS. I REMEMBER READING AN ARTICLE WITH A COUPLE TEST CARDS WITH THIS DESIGN A FEW YEARS AGO AND THINKING, WOW, THAT'S REALLY COOL. THEN I SAW THIS CARD AND THOUGHT, WOW THIS IS REALLY COOL AND PUT THE CARD IN MY CART. NOW, I GO SEARCHING FOR THAT ARTICLE, OR ANYTHING AT ALL THAT EXPLAINS WHAT THIS DESIGN IS AND THERE IS NOTHING TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE. OR, MORE LIKELY, IT'S THERE BUT BURIED UNDER A MOUNTAIN OF AI GENERATED CRAP IN THE SEARCH RESULTS. SO IT'S A COOL LOOKING CARD, WITH A NEAT STORY THAT I CAN'T TELL BECAUSE TOPPS COULDN'T BOTHER TO PUT A LINE OF TEXT ON THE BACK EXPLAINING JUST WHAT THE HELL THIS IS

UPDATE: THANKS TO A TIP FROM THE SHLABOTNIK REPORT THIS DESIGN IS FROM A 1979 PROTOTYPE. RIP TO MY LARRY HISLE PLAYER COLLECTORS OUT THERE

MAN, THESE 582 MONTGOMERY BACKS REALLY ARE DOGSHIT AREN'T THEY

WAIT. I JUST REALIZED I MIXED UP THE BACKS. THIS IS THE BACK DESIGN FOR THE 1951 TEAM SET CARDS AND THE OTHER ONE IS OBVIOUSLY THE 1979 TOPPS ALTERNATE DESIGN. SO THEY DID PUT A TINY BIT OF EFFORT INTO IT! TOPPS IS STILL LAZY FOR THIS AND NOW I'M AN IDIOT ON TOP OF IT ALL. STILL, THREE NICE ACUÑA CARDS FOR ABOUT TWO BUCKS! WHICH WILL PROBABLY BE MUCH, MUCH HARDER TO FIND THIS YEAR WITH THE SEASON HE'S HAVING

OH. That's how.

2011 Allen & Ginter Box Break Part 3: Packs 5-8

"You've fooled around long enough"

Ok, it's been established that this box sucked. Let's knock this thing out so I can move on to different things. Like a second box.

PACK 5

176 Brian Bogusevic
12 Hope Solo
224 Jason Kubel
22 Michael Bourn
215 Andrew McCutchen
330 CC Sabathia SP
141 Vernon Wells A&G Mini
HH80 Cliff Lee Hometown Heroes

I'm going to go back later and score the Gint-A-Cuffs thing. I'm pretty sure I don't have all the money cards scanned anyway. Top three in the pack: Capn' Cheezburger SP, Hope Solo, newest Brave Michael Bourn. See, if I had posted this two weeks ago like I should have, this pack wouldn't have been quite as good.

Did Vernon Wells make it into the FrankenSet Binder? - NO. No chance in hell Wells displaces a 2007 Brian McCann mini.

PACK 6:

202 Manny Pacquiao
238 Rudy Ruettiger
282 Reid Brignac
38 Angel Pagan
183 Mike Napoli
124 Chad Billingsley
273 Brent Morel Mini Black Border
HH74 Jayson Werth Hometown Heroes
15% off Allen & Ginter Binder Offer

And now a word from our sponsor....

The sad thing is I'm seriously thinking about buying this thing. I wonder if I can use my Diamond Giveaway prize along with the code here to get it for extra cheap.

If it weren't for the black border Morel, this pack would have been a complete flop, even with the Manny Paquiao box cover model card. As you can see, the mysterious scanner pube made an appearance on the mini card. You may laugh at my filthy scanner, but not one card scanned on that thing has ever been stolen after being protected by my fearless follicle.

Is anybody ever going to make it into the FrankenSet binder?? YES. An obscure black bordered rookie boots out a 2007 Jorge Posada mini card. Composition book - 1 Yankees - 0

PACK 7:

14 Adrian Beltre
121 JD Drew
41 Carlos Santana
166 Geovany  Soto
BHS-9 Edwin Jackson Baseball Highlight Sketches
318 Brett Wallace SP
UG8 Uninvited Guests mini The Winchester Mystery House
FF19 Floating Fortresses HMS Revenge
Code Cracker card - 8:46

After no inserts or SPs in the last pack, I get four in this one. Sketch cards are nice, but I only want the Heyward. Ships are nice but after a brief obsession with building model warships when I was a kid, I haven't been too interested in boats of any kind. Cards about GHOSTS though... well that's more my speed. I've actually been reading creepypasta on Reddit all weekend instead of blogging if you've been wondering where the hell I've been.

Here's a little bit of a glimpse into Dayf's warped and disturbing psyche if you wish to know such things. When I'm really anxious or stressed or uneasy about something one of my coping mechanisms is to find scary stuff to watch, read or listen to. I've always loved all kinds of horror stuff ever since I was a little kid. I read House of Secrets comics and Stephen King novels. I watched Alfred Hitchcock movies and the Twilight Zone when I wanted classy horror, and cheesy '80s slasher flicks when I wanted a good laugh. I read  Omni magazine and Time Life Ancient Secrets books and every permutation of Chariots of the Gods including the ones debunking all that stuff. I named my (championship winning!) Fantasy Football team the Chupacabras for years. I loooooooove all that creepy crap. Especially when I'm in mortal existential dread over something. After 9/11 I listened to Art Bell's Coast to Coast every dang night for about three years and my favorite show was always the Halloween Ghost Stories show. You see, when I'm really scared about something I like to distract myself with harmless frightening bullshit that I know isn't real to take my mind off of the very real monsters that plague our world. Basically what I'm saying is that until the horrifically selfish fucktards that are playing games with the world economy are booted the hell out of office I'm going to be very interested in the occult for a while. Maybe it's time to pull out my Swamp Thing comics?

PACK 8:

289 Paul Konerko
275 Justin Verlander
9 Joe Saunders
217 Shaun Marcum
295 Chris Carpenter
250 Ichiro Code card
SRU2 Step Right Up! Fire Breathing
HH70 Troy Tulowitzki Hometown Heroes

FIRE BREATHER!!!

FIRE FIRE FIRE!!!!!!!

(I also like crappy anime and manga when I'm stressed)

Oh yeah, there's also a code card I already showed off in another post. 1/3rd of the way through the box and it's only August! I'm making better time than usual!

Laziness

Gonna be busy tomorrow, so I have no idea if I'll be able to post before the weekend. This is partly due to the fact that I ignored cards and writing up posts pretty much all day today. Gota take a break every once in a while. Here's some Old Planter images from deep in the Draft folder (originally dated 12/24/07!) to oogle at until I get my act together.

These images were in a post a long time ago but there's some of you who haven't yet seen the majesty of the THIS BELONG TO JOE K. DUCK stamping...

Taking the weekend off to regroup. See ya on Monday.

Last dang chance to get in the Heritage Blaster League

Deadline was yesterday, but today was murder and I'm going to bed without posting the final list. Anyone who wants in better post a comment here swearing up and down that you have the box ordered but it got lost in the mail, and I drove to Target to get another one but I ran out of gas. I, I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts. IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD.

Just this once my laziness will equal mercy and I'll let you in.

Everyone e-mailing me about promises of prize antes, I got 'em, you're in, don't send anything yet, it's all good, there's no hurry, just be patient, you don't even need to send it to me, just tell me what it is, take your time, DON'T PANIC.

I gotta send an e-mail to Phungo and then I'm off to bed.

Nighty nite.

Do you all mind if...

... I mail it in this weekend and just post a few cards with a tangentially related YouTube music video? You don't? Whew, I'm glad. I'm about totally burned out and I need a weekend to recharge. What's that? You don't mind if I take off Monday too? That's great! I'll find some extra stupid ones to post then.

I'll start off with an obvious one, it being game day and all.

I know, I usually do Vintage, but the Dawgs can't win the SEC East and they have enough wins to get a bowl, so the urgency isn't there any more.Besides, that Hearst card is pretty damn sweet.

A buncha links in leiu of actual writing

I think I'm almost over the war between me and my sinuses. At the very least, the pollen count here is under 12 billion for the first time in a month and my car is no longer yellow. I'm still nice and flippy on decongestants though so I'll let you read other people's stuff while I clear my head enough to stop watching Tay Zonday singing Never Gonna Give You Up on YouTube and start writing about cards again.

John's Old School Box Breaks

Just what it says. John rips boxes of cards from the 90's and shows off the glorious bounty of goodness. Dang I'd love to rip a box of EX-2001.

Baseball Legends

A collaboration of bloggers posting and voting on Baseball Legends. If I can get my act together I'll send in my application and an article this weekend.

Out of the Mill

I don't know if I linked to them before or not, because this blog is in my RSS feed but wasn't in my blogroll. Rich just bought a box of '91 Topps and I loves me anything with Chipper Rookies in it as you will soon see. (woooo... foreshadowing!)

Sports Card Blog Directory

That's right, a blog about card blogs. Good job by Mario for setting this up. One of my goals for this weekend is to finally get my post together for the site. I'm still not sure what to do for the picture yet though.

Shoebox Legends

I've linked to this blog before, but Shane just posted one of the top ten cards ever. Oh what a beautiful sight.

I'll sign off with a link to Big Dunc. There's nothing about cards on that site as far as I can see, but there is a tournament between Star Wars and Lord of the Rings! I can't be the only one that voted for Mace Windu, can I?
