ONLINE MEGA BOX - PART 2

LOL I WROTE THIS OUT AND FORGOT TO POST IT SO NOW EVERYTHING'S OUT OF ORDER. OH WELL AT LEAST IT'S ALREADY WROTE

2003 TOPPS BOBBY COX

CATEGORY - BRAVES, WANTLIST

I'D BE HAPPY WITH A BOBBY COX CARD FROM MY FAVORITE TOPPS DESIGN OF THE 00S IN ANY CASE BUT THIS ONE IS AN ACTUAL WANTLIST NEED. I HAVE NO IDEA IF IT IS FOR THE SET OR THE TEAM SET BUT IT'S ON ONE OF THEM. YOU KNOW WHAT I'M CHECKING THE TEAM BINDER NOW HOLD UP

NOPE IT'S FOR THE SET SET, NOT THE TEAM SET. ASSUMING I HAVEN'T ALREADY GOTTEN THREE OTHER COPIES OF THE CARD THAT I'VE BEEN TOO LAZY TO PUT AWAY. I ALSO DISCOVERED I'M MISSING A TON FROM MY 2002 BRAVES TEAM SET WHICH MAKES ME EXCITED FOR A FUTURE BIRTHDAY BULLSHIT BLASTER POST

1997-98 STADIUM CLUB STACEY AUGMON

CATEGORY - HAWKS

HE'S IN A BLAZERS UNI BUT AUGMON IS FOREVER A HAWK IN MY HEART. LATE 90S STADIUM CLUB CARDS LOOK AWESOME WITH THE HOLOFOIL AND THICK CARD STOCK AND FULL BLEED BORDERS AND SUPER GLOSSY FINISH THAT IS GOOD ABOUT NOT BRICKING. THIS WAS ONE OF MANY PICKUPS WHERE I SAW IT AND JUST WENT FOR IT WITHOUT CONFIRMING THAT I DIDN'T ALREADY HAVE A COPY.I AM BEING MUCH MORE CAREFUL ON MY DOLLAR CARD PICKUPS

1989 PACIFIC LEGENDS SERIES 2 ROGER CRAIG, PHIL CAVARRETTA, RICH REESE, SMOKY BURGESS, EWELL BLACKWELL

CATEGORY - WANTLIST

I KNOCKED OUT A BIG CHUNK OFF MY PACIFIC LEGENDS WANTLIST AND MIGHT HAVE FUCKED AROUND AND COMPLETED SERIES ONE. SERIES TWO I AM NOT NEARLY AS CLOSE TO FINISHING BUT HERE'S 4.5% OF THE SET. HERE'S A SENTENCE FOR EACH CARD:
  • ROGER CRAIG IS CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH A FEW TEAMS BUT THE CINCINNATI REDS IS NOT ONE USUALLY I THINK OF
  • PHIL'S NAME IS MISSPELLED ON THIS CARD, VERY DISRESPECTFUL FOR AN MVP
  • RICH REESE WAS THE VICTIM FOR NOLAN RYAN'S RECORD BREAKING STRIKEOUT IN 1973 AND I HAD TO LOOK THIS UP BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT RICH REESE
  • I LIKED PICKING UP SMOKY BURGESS CARDS WHEN I WAS A KID AND AN ASSHOLE WHO WORKED AT A CARD SHOP MADE FUN OF ME WHEN I BOUGHT HIS 1959 CARD WHICH IS AN AWESOME CARD ACTUALLY
  • EWELL BLACKWELL WAS A REALLY GOOD PITCHER WHO WOULD HAVE WON A CY YOUNG AWARD IN 1947 IF IT HAD EXISTED, AND ALSO HAD THE SAME FIRST NAME AS A FRIEND WHO LIVED DOWN THE STREET
1998 PACIFIC REVOLUTION JASON KENDALL

CATEGORY - SHINY

I HAVE THROWN THE HIGH-END CATEGORY OUT THE WINDOW BECAUSE PRETTY MUCH ALL THE CARDS THAT FIT I BOUGHT FOR THEIR SHINY IF I'M BEING HONEST. HIGH-END IN THE 90S DOES NOT MEAN THE SAME THING AS HIGH-END IN THE 2010S AND BEYOND ANYWAY. I TRIED TO BUY ALL THE REVOLUTION CARDS I COULD FIND BUT THESE THINGS GOT SNATCHED UP QUICK. I'M FORTUNATE TO HAVE GOTTEN KENDALL. THIS THING IS BLINDING IN PERSON, PACIFIC CARDS ARE SOOO GOOD

1992 ACTION PACKED MINNIE MINOSO

CATEGORY - PLAYER COLLECTION, WANTLIST

I DID NOT HAVE A WANT LIST FOR ACTION PACKED WHEN I PUT THIS IN MY CART BUT AFTER THE FACT I DID DISCOVER THAT IS IS ON THERE. MINNIIE MINOSO CARDS ARE USUALLY AN AUTOMATIC GET THOUGH AND IF I SEE THIS CARD IN A FUTURE DIME BOX I MIGHT GET IT AGAIN. THESE CARDS ARE SO GREAT BUT IN 1992 THEY REALLY WERE $2.69 A PACK FOR FIVE CARDS AT K-MART AND THAT WAS JUST TOO MUCH

2021-22 DONRUSS BOGDAN BOGDANOVIC

CATEGORY - HAWKS

I MORE OR LESS GOT ONE HAWKS CARD OF EACH OF THE STARTING LINEUP AND THIS IS THE ONE FOR BOGI. MOST OF MY BOGDANOVIC CARDS HAVE HIM IN A KINGS UNI SO IT'S NICE TO GET ONE IN RED. THE HAWKS HAVE STARTED OUT SUPER SLOWLY THE PAST TWO YEARS AND COINCIDENTALLY BOGDAN WAS HURT IN THE OFFSEASON BOTH OF THOSE YEARS. THIS YEAR BOGI IS HEALTHY SO I HAVE UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS THAT MIGHT ALREADY BE BLOWN UP BY THE TIME THIS POST IS UP

NOTE FROM THE FUTURE: YEP, KABLOOEY

2020-21 PRIZM KEVIN HUERTER

CATEGORY - HAWKS

THE HAWKS ARE OBVIOUSLY MY #1 TEAM BUT IN 2024 THE KINGS ARE RIGHT UP THERE WITH THEM. MAINLY BECAUSE THIS IS THE YEAR WE GET THEIR FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK IF - AND THIS IS A BIG IF - THEY MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. I LOVE RED VELVET AND I HOPE HE DROPS THIRTY A GAME ON THEIR WAY TO THE NUMBER SIX SEED. LORD KNOWS WE DESPERATELY NEED THAT FIRST ROUNDER AFTER THE DEJOUNTE TRADE

2020-21 PRIZM DE'ANDRE HUNTER

CATEGORY - HAWKS

THERE WERE LIKE FOUR OTHER DE'ANDRE CARDS I WAS WATCHING BUT COULD NEVER PULL THE TRIGGER ON BECAUSE I HONESTLY WAS NOT SURE IF HE'D EVEN BE WITH THE TEAM BY OPENING DAY. THIS DID NOT DISSUADE ME FROM GETTING THREE JOHN COLLINS CARDS AFTER HE WAS SALARY DUMPED TO THE JAZZ. THE HAWKS NEED DE'ANDRE TO PLAY LIKE THE NUMBER FOUR OVERALL PICK HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE REALLY QUICK IF THE HAWKS ARE REALISTICALLY GOING TO DO ANYTHING THIS YEAR. UNLESS JALEN JOHNSON OR AJ GRIFFIN WALLY PIPPS HIM AT LEAST

UP NEXT: FEETSBAWL, HAWKEY AND SOME O-PEE-CHEE

ONLINE MEGA BOX - PART 1

YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE DONE WITH THESE RANDOM POSTS OF CARDS FROM THE BASEBALLCARDSTORE.CA FREE PROMOTION? OH HELL NAW. I GOT A MASSIVE PILE OF STUFF FROM THAT SITE AND THEY ARE FUN AND EASY POSTS TO WRITE SO YOU'RE STUCK WITH THESE FOR A LONG TIME. THIRTY-SIX POSTS LONG. AND THE PICTURES HAVE ALREADY BEEN TOOKEN AND CROPPEDED SO ALL THE ACTUAL HARD WORK IS DONE. I JUST NEED TO UPLOAD EM AND TYPE SOME NONSENSE NOW. WE DON'T HAVE A BLASTER THIS TIME, NO. THIS IS AN ONLINE MEGA BOX. SAME PRICE AS ONE OF THOSE SPECIAL BOXES YOU CAN'T BUY AT TARGET BECAUSE THE FLIPPERS GOT TO THEM ALREADY EXCEPT WITH TEN TIMES THE CARDS. STRAP IN BECAUSE WE GOT SOME FUN STUFF COMING. ONCE AGAIN I WAS TOO LAZY TO ORGANIZE THE CARDS INTO ACTUAL THEMES AND MOSTLY AM JUST POSTING THEM AS THEY CAME OUT OF THE BOX. WE'LL START WITH A COIN BECAUSE THAT WAS RIGHT ON TOP

1990 TOPPS COINS DALE MURPHY

CATEGORY - BRAVES

I COMPLETELY IGNORED THESE COIN SETS AT THE TIME AND LATER ENDED UP WITH TWO COMPLETE SETS THAT WERE INCLIDED IN REPACK TINS. SO I PROBABLY HAVE ONE OR TWO OF THESE ALREADY BUT WHEN YOU ARE IN THE MIDST OF A DIMEBOX FRENZY IF YOU SEE A MURPHY ODDBALL YOU GET IT. MURPH IS ONE OF THOSE GUYS I NEED TO GET IN TCDB IF FOR NO OTHER REASON I CAN SEE JUST HOW MANY 80S ODDBALLS OF HIS I DON'T HAVE

THIS IS THE 1990 VERSION OFTHE COINS, THERE WERE ALSO SETS IN 1987-1989. THAT'S TOO MANY COINS. I GOTTA FIND THREE MORE MURPHY COINS NOW. MAYBE I DON'T NEED TO KNOW HOW MANY CARDS I DON'T HAVE

2022 PANINI CORNERSTONES JAZZ CHISHOLM

CATEGORY - SUPERSTAR? PLAYER COLLECTION? I JUST LIKE JAZZ

CORNERSTONES IS A BASKETBALL PRODUCT THAT PANINI THREW OUT THERE FOR BASEBALL LAST YEAR. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN PANINI'S LAST SET BEFORE GETTING FANATIC'D HAD THEY NOT JUST DECIDED 'SCREW IT, WHO NEEDS LICENSES' AND REBRANDED AS BOWMAN WITH LEGENDS. IT'S A WEIRD LOOKIN SET THO. SUPER THICK BUT WITH A CHEAP FEEL LIKE THE FRONT LAMINATION IS ABOUT TO PEEL OFF. VERY DARK BUT WITH ODD RAINBOW FOIL THAT SHOWS UP IN STRIPES. I FEEL LIKE THEY TRIED TO MAKE ZENITH BUT GOOBERED IT BADLY AND THREW ANOTHER BRAND NAME ON IT AT THE LAST MINUTE. COMPLAINTS ASIDE, I BOUGHT A FEW OF THESE OF PLAYERS I LIKE. JAZZ IS A PLAYER I LIKE

2005-06 TOPPS BASKETBALL BRIAN GRANT

CATEGORY - WANTLIST

MY BOOKMARKS ARE FILLED WITH CARDS I NEEDED FROM WANTLISTS THAT I MEANT TO BUY EVENTUALLY BUT NOW NEVER WILL. IT'S MOSTLY JUNKWAX ERA STUFF, SO NO BIG LOSS. THE STARS I BOUGHT. ALSO CARDS FROM EARLY 00S SETS YOU CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE. THOSE I GOT IMMEDIATELY. 05-06 IS ONE OF THOSE TOPPS BASKETBALL SETS WHERE MY COLLECTION IS QUITE SPARCE SO EVERY BIT HELPS

1995 MEGACARDS CONLON COLLECTION GEORGE EARNSHAW

CATEGORY - WANTLIST

CONLON CARDS GOT LEFT IN THE BOOKMARKS THOUGH. I LASER FOCUSED ON THE MORE EASILY COMPLETABLE PACIFIC LEGENDS SET SO THESE TOOK A BACK SEAT. THIS CARD IS FROM THE 1995 HIGH NUMBERED SERIES WHERE SALES WERE IN THE DUMPER AND THEY PANICKED AND ADDED COLORED BORDERS AND FOIL STAMPING. OR MAYBE IT'S A PARALLEL? I DUNNO. I BARELY HAVE ANY OF THEM SO I HONESTLY HAVE NO IDEA. GEORGE WAS A REALLY GOOD PITCHER FOR A FEW YEARS AND THE BACK TELLS OF HIS WAR HEROICS

2020-21 HOOPS CAM REDDISH

CATEGORY - HAWKS

CAM DIDN'T WORK OUT FOR THE HAWKS AND THEN DIDN'T REALLY WORK OUT FOR THE KNICKS AND HE FOLLOWED UP HIS TIME IN NEW YORK WITH A STINT IN PORTLAND WHERE HE DIDN'T WORK OUT. NOW HE'S WITH THE LAKERS AND OF COURSE HE'LL PROBABLY GO OFF THIS YEAR. PICK HIM UP EARLY IN YOUR FANTASY DRAFTS, AND GIVE ME AN INVITE TO THE LEAGUE, I WANNA PLAY AGAIN THIS YEAR. YOU WILL SEE A TON OF BRAVES IN THESE POSTS BUT I SEEMED TO LIMIT MYSELF TO ONLY ONE HAWKS CARD PER PLAYER. CAM WILL PROBABLY END UP GETTING A PAGE IN MY HAWKS BINDER SO I DO NEED TO FIND AT LEAST 9 CARDS OF HIM AND THIS IS A START

1992-93 UPPER DECK MCDONALD'S ED BELFOUR

CATEGORY - PLAYER COLLECTION

I HOPE YOU LIKE ED BELFOUR (SORRY FUJI) BECAUSE YOU'RE ABOUT TO SEE A LOT OF HIS CARDS. AFTER NOT GIVING A SINGLE SHIT ABOUT ANY OF MY HOCKEY CARDS FOR OVER A DECADE, SEEING A BUNCH OF OF THEM FOR FREE GOT ME TO LOOK THROUGH THEM TO FIGURE OUT WHAT I ACTUALLY LIKED OUT OF THEM. THE RESULTS: TOPPS SETS, INSERTS, AND CARDS OF A FEW PLAYERS I LIKE. SPECIFICALLY: CHRIS CHELIOS, ED BELFOUR, PAUL COFFEY AND STEVE YZERMAN. HERE'S ONE OF MANY MCDONALD'S CARDS I NABBED, BACK WHEN THEIR SPECIAL PACKS CONTAINED BASICALLY REGULAR UPPER DECK CARDS. THIS CHANGED QUICKLY AND YOU WILL SEE SOME WILD SHIT FROM THE GOLDEN ARCHES VERY SOON

2013 PRIZM DRAFT PICKS JASON HURSH PRIZM

CATEGORY - BRAVES, SHINY

JASON WAS THE BRAVES' FIRST ROUND PICK IN 2013 AND I THOUGHT HE WAS ONE OF MANY PITCHING PROSPECTS THAT GOT TRADED OFF BUT I WAS INCORRECT. JASON PITCHED 11 GAMES FOR THE BRAVES IN THE DISMAL PERIOS OF 2016-2017. IT'S A PLEASANT SURPRISE TO HAVE A DRAFT PICK/PROSPECT CARD THAT ACTUALLY PLAYED FOR THE TEAM. THIS CARD IS REALLY SUPER EXTRA SHINY TOO, THOS DOT PATTERNIN THE BACKGROUND DOES A LOT OF WORK

2022 CHRONICLES BASE CORBIN BURNES

CATEGORY - CHRONICLES

I WENT APESHIT PICKING UP CHRONICLES ON THIS BINGE AND THERE WAS STILL A TON OF CARDS I DIDN'T GET AROUND TO. MY FIRST FOCUS WAS STARS AND COOL LOOKING SETS. CORBIN WON A CY YOUNG SO HE'S A STAR. THAT'S HOW IT WORKS

2022 CHRONICLES PHOENIX JOSIAH GRAY

CATEGORY - CHRONICLES

JOSIAH GRAY WAS AN ALL-STAR THIS YEAR! YES, FOR WASHINGTON, BUT IT STILL COUNTS. I LIKE THAT HE'S A PRETTY GOOD PITCHER BUT MY BRAVES STILL HIT HIM HARD. NOW THAT I SAY THIS HE WILL ALCANTARA OUR ASSES IN 2024. PHOENIX IS STILL NOT MY FAVORITE CHRONICLES DESIGN BUT IT'S CHROMEY SO IT MADE THE CUT IN MY CARD CHOICES MORE OFTEN THAN NOT

2022 CHRONICLES ELITE KYLE MULLER

CATEGORY - CHRONICLES, BRAVES

I PROBABLY COULD HAVE COMPLETED THE ENTIRE 2022 CHRONICLES KYLE MULLER RUN BUT I VERY QUICKLY GOT MULLERED OUT. THESE ELITE CARDS ARE TOO SHINY TO IGNORE. DONT' GET ME WRONG, THEY ARE VERY VERY BORING, BUT DAMN THEY SHINY

2020 DONRUSS RONALD ACUÑA JR.

CATEGORY - RONALD!!!!!

YEAAAHHHHHHHH FREE RONALD! ALL RONALDS ARE GOOD RONALDS. I NEVER READ INSTRUCTIONS SO FOR A WHILE MY ORDERS WERE BASICALLY 40 CARDS ALL AT ONCE WITH SHIPPING SO I WOULD HAVE A BACKLOG OF CARDS I WANTED TO PICK UP ALL OPEN IN TABS READY TO BE PUT IN MY CART. THEN WHEN A CARD I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT POPPED UP I FRANTICALLY CLICKED ADD TO CART 40 TIMES AND HOPED NO ONE SNIPED ME BEFORE I COULD PAY. THIS STRATEGY WAS TERRIBLE AND I LOST WELL OVER HALF OF THE 'CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT' CARDS* I WAS SHOOTING FOR. AFTER MISSING OUT ON A TON OF ALLEN & GINTER MINIS** I QUIT DOING THIS BUT RONALD HERE ABSOLUTELY ANCHORED ONE OF MY 40 CARD ORDERS

THAT'S IT FOR TODAY, POSTS WILL USUALLY BE ABOUT 11-12 CARDS EACH BECAUSE I CAN KNOCK OUT A POST LIKE THAT IN AN HOUR. THERE'S A FEW OUTLIERS THAT ARE WAY SMALLER OR LARGER FOR THEMATIC REASONS. UP NEXT: LEGENDS AND HOX

*SURPRISINGLY, I AM STILL ALIVE

**PUTTING A CARD IN MY CART AND THEN HAVING SOMEONE SNATCH IT FROM AWAY WHEN I WAS TRYING TO PAY FOR SHIPPING DOUBLY SCREWED ME AS I THEN HAD TO REMOVE THE CARD FROM THE ORDER, FIND A REPLACEMENT CARD TO KEEP THE ORDER AT 40 CARDS, AND THEN TRY TO PAY AGAIN ONLY TO FIND THAT TWO MORE CARDS GOT SNATCHED AWAY. AFTER LOSING A DOZEN MINIS TWO OR THREE AT A TIME LIKE THIS I GAVE UP AND STARTED PUTTING IN A BUNCH OF SMALL 5-10 CARD ORDERS TRIGGERED BY AFOREMENTIONED 'CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT' CARDS. I FELT BAD BECAUSE I THOUGHT I WAS MAKING WAY MORE WORK FOR STEVEN AND NANCY BUT IN REALITY I WAS BUYING WAY LESS CARDS THEY PUT ON THE SITE THREE YEARS AGO AND COULDN'T FIND ANYMORE AND WAS BUYING MORE NEW STUFF SO WHO KNOWS IF I WAS MORE OR LESS ANNOYING

BLACK FRIDAY COMC PICKUPS - PART 56: BLUE DEVIL

WE ARE BEGINNING TO REACH THE END OF THE PLANNED PICKUPS FROM THE BLACK FRIDAY SALE. I HAD TO MAKE SOME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT CHOICES ON CARDS FOR A FAVORITE PLAYER AND A FAVORITE SET. TO AVOID MAKING DECISIONS, I WAS ENTERING IN DOZENS OF PLAYER AND ACTOR NAMES INTO THE SEARCH BAR TO SEE WHAT WOULD COME UP. THIS CARD CAUGHT MY EYE AND I HAD A DOUBLE TAKE WHEN I LOOKED CLOSER

2022-23 CHRONICLES DRAFT PICKS  A.J. GRIFFIN DONRUSS RATED ROOKIE BLUE PARALLEL

DUE TO VARIOUS PROCRASTINATIONS THIS CARD IS BEING POSTED EITHER RIGHT BEFORE OR RIGHT AFTER THE 2023 NBA DRAFT SO IT'S APPROPRIATE WE HAVE A CHRONICLES DRAFT PICK CARD TODAY. I HAVE NOT PICKED UP MANY PACKS OF BASKETBALL CARDS IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS SO MY COLLECTION OF CURRENT HAWKS PLAYERS IS KINDA SKIMPY. I CHECKED OUT COMC'S OFFERINGS FOR MOST OF THE HAWKS' RECENT DRAFT PICKS AND STUMBLED ACROSS THIS AJ GRIFFIN CHRONICLES DONRUSS CARD. THIS WAS WHEN CHRONICLES DRAFT PICKS WAS PRETTY NEW AND THERE WASN'T A TON OF THEM LISTED. FOR COMPARISON A JALEN JOHNSON FLEER METAL ROOKIE I WAS CONCIDERING HAD DOZENS OF COPIES AVAILABLE, WHILE THIS DONRUSS CARD HAD JUST TWO. THOSE TWO CAUGHT MY EYE BECAUSE THEY BOTH LOOKED A LITTLE DIFFERENT. ONE HAD NUMBERS, THE OTHER HAD DIFFERENT NUMBERS. THEY WERE BOTH LISTED AS A BASE CARD BUT WERE SERIAL NUMBERED, ONE TO 199 AND THE OTHER TO 99. THIS WAS IN THE EARLY DAYS OF MY CHRONICLES OBSESSION SO I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT SO I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON. I DID KNOW THAT 99 IS LOVER THAN 199 WHICH IS LOWER THAN HOWEVER MANY DOZENS OF METAL JALEN JOHNSON CARDS ARE OUT THERE SO AJ WENT INTO MY CART. TURNS OUT IT'S A BLUE FOIL PARALLEL WHICH IS VERY APPROPRIATE FOR A DUKE PLAYER. GRIFFIN ALSO TURNED OUT TO BE A PRETTY DANG GOOD PLAYER AND HELPED TAKE THE STING OUT OF THE DUMB KEVIN HUERTER TRADE

THERE'S STILL TONS OF THAT SKYBOX METAL ROOKIE OF JALEN ON COMC SO MAYBE HE'LL END UP IN THIS YEAR'S BLACK FRIDAY CART. I'VE BEEN PURPOSEFULLY HOLDING OFF ON BUYING CARDS OF HAWKS PLAYERS NOT NAMES TRAE RECENTLY SINCE HALF THE TEAM IS ON THE TRADE BLOCK AT THE MOMENT. THANKFULLY THE TEAM STINKS AT THE MOMENT SO I CAN GET ROOKIE CARDS FOR THE REST OF THE TEAM FOR UNDER A BUCK AND SOMETIMES TWO FOR A DOLLAR ONLINE. I'M QUITE EXCITED FOR THIS YEAR'S DRAFT DUE TO ALL THE TRADE RUMORS FLOATING AROUND AND THE FACT THAT THE HAWKS ARE ON THEIR BEST DRAFT RUN PRETTY MUCH EVER. TRAE'S A SUPERSTAR, AND COLLINS, HUNTER, OKONGWU JALEN AND AJ ARE ALL DECENT PLAYERS. AFTER YEARS AND YEARS OF ROY MARBLES AND DOUG EDWARDSES AND ED GRAYS AND ROSHOWN MCLEODS AND DERMARR JOHNSONS AND JOSH CHILDRESSES AND SHELDEN WILLIAMSES IT'S SO NICE TO HAVE DRAFT PICKS WORK OUT. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ANYONE IN THIS YEARS' DRAFT CLASS AND WILL NOT PRETEND TO KNOW SO I PLAN ON JUST BEING HAPPY WITH WHOEVER THE HAWKS PICK UP. I CAN'T LIE THOUGH, I'D LOVE IT IF THEY WERE ABLE TO SELECT GRADEY DICK FOR NO OTHER REASON THAT I WANT TO HEAR HIS NAME CALLED ON EVERY GAME BROADCAST

Four Cards, Four Teams

More card shop pickups here. Amazing how one trip to the LCS can generate 2 week's worth of posts. No bargains in this post though (a Kevin Brown rookie for a dime IS a bargain, dagnabbit!) just some cards from the local sports franchises.

Monday night's debacle not withstanding, Matty Ice is going to be the Falcons' franchise for a long time. It seems somewhat ridiculous to call myself a Falcon collector when I have dozens of cards of Chris Chandler but my Matt Ryans are in single digits. I dug through the dollar box of Falcons looking for a Ryan or two to add to the collection. While perusing through the stack I came to a realization:

I HATE PANINI'S FOOTBALL DESIGNS.

I really can't stand them at all. Ugly, ugly, ugly. Too busy, too random and the design overwhelms the picture. It's like Panini's mission statement is to emulate 1995 Fleer as much as humanly possible. I guess people must like it (or they simply discard the base and chase the hits instead) but it's not for me. Which sucks because a large percentage of Ryan cards are on Panini designs. Instead I got a football card from a baseball set where the subject is wearing a college uniform.

Panini's basketball designs I've got no problem with. Yeah, there's a lot of the same randomness going on, but it works better with the hoops. There was no way I was passing up a Crown Collection card of my favorite Hawk, Al Horford. He stayed in school, won a championship, plays hard every night, is an All-Star playing out of position, and Al has more leadership in his pinky finger than Joe Johnson and Josh Smith have put together. Al's the real deal.

I've all but given up on hockey. The local franchise has been a trainwreck from the moment they took the ice. Every last one of their big draft picks have flopped, crashed or have been squandered by crappy management. Now that the ownership troubles have been sorted out there's a very real chance that they might not even be here much longer (Winnipeg Jets take 2 perhaps?). The only reason I haven't bought a Gordie Howe sweater and jumped ship for the Red Wings is this guy right here. Evander Kane. This is my very first Evander Kane card after hunting for one for the past year. Even though the franchise is a complete mess (yes I know they are doing better this year) and might be in a different city soon Evander is the type of player I can latch on to to keep my fandom alive. Or at least help me forget about the Stephans, Heatleys and Kovalchuks....

Let's finish off with an Uggla. Wrong uniform, sure, but it will be a couple of months until he's in the right one. Besides, it's shiny and curvy. Everyone likes shiny, right? Curvy not so much.

So long, Joe

I don't give a shit what Belkin said, you were worth it. Two straight playoff appearances after having wins in the teens was totally worth it.

Have fun wherever you go next year, cause it's probably not going to be Atlanta.

Sunday, May 3, 2009

We woooooooooon!

We won a playoff series!

For the first time since Clinton was President!

We actually did it!

Now we get to play King James and the Cavs!

If there is a Cavaliers fan out there who wants free cards, make me a (reasonable) wager on the Hawks - Cavs series. It's a pretty lock solid win. Just remember I have little money but lots of inventory right now.

We won!

PLAYOFF BASKETBALL

The Hawks have home court in the playoffs for the first time since Nixon was president! No wait, that other guy... the one who did the crooked stuff. THE OTHER ONE. They have home court for the first time in a long time anyway. To celebrate I bought a single lone pack of 2009 Upper Deck Lineage basketball cards in the hopes of pulling some Hawks. Unfortunately Madding stoled my pack. No matter, I've got a pack to open anyway. This stuff appeared to be Timelines for basketball, but it was more like a poorly done Heritage. It only cost $2.11 anyway.

94 Carlos Boozer

Boozer... heh heh... As you can see Upper Deck recylcled their 1991-1992 set design for this product. The back of the cards only have 4 years of stats and I was surprised that there was no line for Cleveland on there. Was it really that long ago that whole free agent brouhaha happened? Jeez I'm getting old.

37 Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan's a Hall of Famer. Plus he stayed all four years at Wake. Any Duncan card is a good one.

229 Sean Singletary RC

The box advertised a certain number of Jordan and rookie cards per box, so these may or may not be short printed. I don't care about the set enough to to the math. I don't really remember the ratio either, it was something like 2 Jordans and 4 rookies a box or something. They took the Rookie card design from the 1992-93 Upper Deck set, which in my opinion is the best looking set Upper Deck ever put out. The card looks good, but I don't know who this guy is and I don't really care.
Here's the back. Wooo.

152 Marvin Williams

YEAH! A Hawk! Marvin has improved greatly over the past few years. Hawks fans have almost forgotten that we passed up Chris Paul. Almost.

Lookit those stats. Steady improvement every year. Who needs a two time all star and face of the franchise.

105 Kyle Korver

This guy shows up in all my packs.

200 Greg Oden

Ha! A Blazer! Now I have something to tempt Madding with for all those Hawks he pulled. Hopefully he doesn't mind that I dropped the pack on the way to the checkout counter and there's a big ding on the top right corner. Hmmm... I could just neglect to tell him... And claim the post office did it... It's the perfect crime....

UPDATE: But that would be wrong.

So there's my one and only pack of Upper Deck Lineage ever. I wish they would have used the 1992-93 set design instead, 'cause they sure won't have a chance to use it next year. Oh well, I can probably find a box of the original stuff for the price of two hobby packs anyway. I got my Hawk, so that's a good omen that Atlanta's going all the way. Bring on the Heat!

Six And Oh

What is 6-0?

The record of your Playoff-bound Atlanta Hawks!!!

The Hawks and Lakers (sounds like a finals matchup to me!) are the only undefeated teams left in the NBA. The Hawks will remain undefeated tonight as they get revenge on the Celtics for impeding Atlanta's championship run last year.

So yeah, I've gone a little Hawks crazy. A win on the road in Chicago tends to change one's opinion on how sucky a franchise is. It's strange, Mike Woodson with hair and a cop stache = bad coach. Mike Woodson bald with a goatee = great coach. I also have a huge man crush on Al Horford now. I'll be glued to the TV tonight but I'll have a rather huge Celtic post up after the game to console all the Boston Faithful.

Oh, also - I don't know how many of you out there actually collect basketball but I'm on the lookout for cards of the current Hawks team and I have TONS of old hoops cards I now deem expendable. Hint, hint.

Update: I DON'T CARE IF WE LOST THAT WAS THE BEST DAMN HAWKS GAME I'VE SEEN IN DECADES

There is no shame in losing a game to the world champions on a last second desperation shot by Paul Pierce. The Hawks are back! THEY'RE BAAAAAAACK!

THUNDER

The 4 and 0 undefeated FIRST PLACE Atlanta Hawks take on Oklahoma City tonight in a game what will provide me the first opportunity to see for myself just how hideous the Thunder's uniforms really are. It also gives me an excuse to post this:

(original video here since AC/DC won't allow embedding. Believe it or not, Apaches blowing shit up is far inferior to the original video)

This is also a good time to note that the 2008-2009 Topps basketball set is really starting to grow on me despite the fact that they shortprinted the @$^#*% rookies again. Why is that, you may ask? Here's why:

SCREW the rookies. The veteran cards in this set are incredible.

1980-81 Topps Basketball Atlanta Hawks Team Set

Here's the first team set I promised from 1980-81 Topps basketball. Yes, I'm doing 'em all, this is my basketball 'thing' this year just like the vintage college football cards are my football 'thing'. Hockey doesn't quite have a 'thing' yet, but I'm thinging about it. It's a loooong offseason. Even longer than the game 5 rain delay. Anyway the first team set is who else - the Atlanta Hawks.

#3 Dan Roundfield East All-Star
#5 John Drew East All-Star
#13 Eddie Johnson East All-Star

The first 18 cards in the set are All-Star cards, and the Hawks have three representatives in the subset. The Hawks were pretty darn good in the '79-80 season, they went 50-32 and won the Central division. They got bounced in the first round by the 76ers which is par for the course for the Hawks.

The backs of the All-Star cards act as the checklists for the set. The cards are pretty tiny so each card has only 14 or 15 players listed. Now I know what a lot of you are thinking right now... I don't care at all about these stupid little cards but dang they look familiar! Well that;s because the design is mostly swiped from the 1978 Topps set.

A little skinnier, the name and frame are both the same color and the position is moved to the bottom, but they are pretty much the same. I know Rowland Office is awesome, but back to the hoops.
#19 John Drew Scoring Leader
#20 Dan Roundfield Rebound Leader

#21 Armond Hill Assist Leader

The set is ordered by team with the exception of a few players who changed teams in the offseason. The Hawks are cards 19-29 and 126. The first three cards of each team set are team leader cards showing the leader in scoring, rebounding and assists. The leading stat is shown on the front where the position would otherwise go because the back shows a different stat:

Instead of the single season leader, Topps shows the all-time franchise in these categories. As you can see Bob Pettit was the franchise leader in scoring and rebounding while Lenny Winkens led in assists. Now to the individual players.

#22 Charlie Criss

Charlie came off the bench at guard for the Hawks, the 5-8 Criss has done a lot of color commentary on the Hawks' broadcasts.

#23 John Drew

A huge scoring talent for the Hawks, Drew was traded to the Jazz for Dominique Wilkins in 1982and ended up banned fron the league for drug violations.

#24 Steve Hawes

The uncle of Kings center Spencer Hawes, I remember Steve as the guy getting pwned by Artis Gilmore on a poster that hung in my room for years.

#25 Armond Hill

The Hawks starting point guard, Armond is now an assistant coach for the Celtics.

#26 Eddie Johnson

A great scorer who ended up completely destroying his life. Cocaine is a helluva drug, folks.

#27 James McElroy

James was a reserve guard for the Hawks, as evidenced by his extremely red warm up jacket. There are quite a few cards in this set with weird color.

#28 Tree Rollins

I was extremely impressed with Tree when I was a little kid. I asked my uncle one time if he thought the Hawks would retire his number and he said "for what? having the lowest points per game average?" I was disappointed, but still impressed with Tree.

#29 Dan Roundfield

Dan Roundfield was the first big star I remember on the Hawks. He could score, but was best known for his defense.

#126 Tom Burleson

Tom is one of those players who are stuck in another team after signing in the offseason. Note the Kings jersey. Tom was once the 3rd overall pick in the draft, appropriate since he scored 3.3 points and 3.0 rebounds a game while backing up Tree.

Last but not least, a cartoon. Everyone knows Wayne Rollins is Tree, but did you know Charlie Criss was known as Mosquito? And that's just one of his nicknames. I hardly dare to take a guess at the rest.
