This made me laugh...

...and now I feel bad.

So earlier today Buster Olney threw out a rumor that the Braves were looking at Brad Penny. This makes absolutely no sense since a) the Braves just kicked a guy whose number will soon be retired to the curb because they have too many starting pitchers and b) Penny makes $5mil which the Braves can't afford. A trade for Penny would make no sense at all unless two or three other deals went down at the same time and multiple dominoes falling blockbuster deals like that just don't happen outside of fantasy sports. The rumor has already been debunked by Mark Bowman anyway.

So of course any time the Braves are mentioned in trade rumors, good 'ol Frenchy is mentioned. It's amazing how badly the tide has turned on Jeff. Even the announcers for the Gwinnett Braves are talking about how he's likely to be traded during the broadcast. So much for hometown hero. Shysterballer Craig Calterra came out with this quip that made me literally LOL:
Normally I'd counsel against bringing in a seventh starter, but since this is supposed to be for Francoeur, you could put Penny in right field and it would still be a net upgrade.

Hell, Francoeur for Bill James' belly button lint would be an upgrade.

Upon reading this, I burst out laughing and then felt bad because The Natural has now fallen to the level of belly button lint. I don't think even Michael Vick fell as fast and as hard as Jeff. Someone out there say a prayer for poor Jeff in his time of need... or at least pray for his swing.

Fifth Blog Bat Around

Ok, it's that time again. The Fifth Blog Bat Around is ready to roll. If you aren't familiar with the Bat Arounds, here are links to the first four:

Inaugural Event

Bat Around Part Deux

Third Time's A Charm

Once... Twice... Four Times a Lady

Ok, look over those and read every single post because this material will be on your final exam. Once you're done with that, you can check out the topic for this go around:

What is the best experience you have had acquiring cards or memorabilia?

I've left this one purposely vague so you all can riff on it. I'm basically looking for those times and places where you've really enjoyed picking up some cards/a card/an autograph/memorabilia/whatever else you collect. You can focus on your most favoritest memory or write about a whole bunch of different times. Doesn't matter when or where or how, it could be any of these examples:
That junky hobby shop with the old dude who called you 'Skippy' and would give you a Coke to drink while poring over his common boxes

That time online where the dude from Taipei tried to snipe you but you totally sniped him back with 1.8 seconds to go

That TTM letter to your boyhood hero that came back 17 years later

That time you chased down your favorite player in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen and he traded you his jersey for a Peanut Buster Parfait

That time at the flea market where that dude was selling vintage stuff he cleaned out of his barn dirt cheap

That birthday gift from auntie Helga where she threw in uncle Shlomo's card collection along with the bushel of socks that she normally gave you

That amazing deal on a case you got at AmazingDealsOnCases.com that was even more amazing than normal

That one time where you slipped a pack into the jacket pocket of a pack searcher at Target and hung around so you could watch the security alarm go off

Or any other time where a prized collectible fell into your lap. This is more about the whole acquisition experience rather than just an individual part in the collection. Write as much as you want, post it on your blog and paste the link in this post. (or you could e-mail me instead if you're a brave soul) The more memories the better, feel free to rattle off a 20-pager like I normally do. And now the fine print:

Here are the rules established by Gellman, which Dave modified slightly, and then were subsequently cut and pasted by me:

  • This is an open forum, and anyone can participate at any time. I will not discriminate, nor will I leave you out if we don’t agree. Heck, even the bloggers at Beckett can participate if they want to!
  • Please make your post at least semi-relevant to the topic. You can be as creative as you want, but keep the general topic in mind. You don’t need to answer all of the questions in the topic, but your post should address what kinds of products you’d like to see the card companies produce.
  • Keep your post PG or PG-13, I won’t censor it, but this is necessary since we’ll have a vast audience, which might include kids.
  • Give us something to read, so don’t just write two sentences and call it a day. Make this a normal post, as you would want your readers to see it as a normal part of your blog. Given the great entries that we’ve seen in the past, I don’t think this will be a problem.
  • Please give your post a title, and mark it so it’s easy to find when you give me the link. If you want your full name included and not just your blog title, put it in there somewhere.
  • Please comment on this post or email me the link to your post so that I’ll know about it.

Ok, that's about it, write 'em up and make sure I get a link. Deadline is:

Midnight Tuesday, March 24th

I'll post 'em all on Wednesday. First one to give me a link gets on the top of the post, the rest will be listed in the order received. Above all, have fun kiddos!

Blogroll Screwups

There's a bunch of blogs that I thought I had posted to the blogroll, but aren't there. I've looked through my stuff and have finally added:

Wrigley Wax

I Heart Halos

Crackin Wax

Wait Till Next Year

Goose Joak (who alerted me to my linkage issues)

The Infield Dirt

Chuck's Used Cards

Green Monster

87 Donruss

MLB Collector

Darryl Strawberry Fields

The Pursuit of 80's(ness)

The Pursuit of Red Sox

The Player To Be Named Later

If you requested that I add your blog any time in December, check to see if it's up there. If it isn't you'll have to request it again because I forgot about it or screwed it up somehow. Actually that's pretty good for anybody who sent me an e-mail about anything in December. Send it again, 'cause I goofed it somehow.

Adding these blogs upped the count to 140 on the Daily Reading list. This is too many. These blogs haven't posted anything in the past 4 months and are out of Daily Reading.
They will still be in the Blogroll though. If any of them become active again, I'll put them back in Daily Reading.

If you're not on the list or I just took you off and wish to file a protest, you know the drill. Click on the profile and e-mail me.

Blog Pimpin' - This Just In

Three more blogs for National Pimping Blogs Day, before I update A Pack A Day and start scanning 50 more cards for The 792. If you didn't see your blog on here, leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail and I'll correct the situation in the future.

First up is Kevin from Dave and Adam's Card World blog, this is pretty neat blog packed full of card news. Why, just today they taught me what a cut card case is. No, they don't actually cut the cards, don't worry.

Card Weasel has a sparse but vigorous blog, Gem Mint Genius that shares the story of how Tim Lincecum ruined his life. He also became smitten with Allen & Ginter so it's all good.

Finally, I have a player collector's blog to share with you all, this one is for JT Snow. This blog is 1990's cheezy parallel heaven. I actually found out about this blog in a trade I'm working on, maybe you'll see some of my cards on there sometime in the future.

Update: Ask and ye shall receive. When I click on a blog and the first thing I see is a 1976 Father and Son card of Gus and Buddy Bell, that immediately tells me that this is a good blog. Plus he has a vintage Frank Demaree card, just like me! His is a '41 Play Ball and mine is a '38 Goudey, buy hey, it's still old! So check out baseballcardman, even if his Demaree card isn't quite as old as mine.
;)

I hope you enjoy the blogs and you found something new for your RSS feeds!

Blog Pimpin - Back to Back

You may remember reader Mark as the guy who completed my Allen & Ginter and UD Masterpieces sets. well he has a blog too, Stats on the Back. It's pretty new, but where else in the universe can you see a detailed pack break and review of two 1989 Topps 39 card jumbo packs.

This is another good one and I'm embarrassed that I forgot who writes it. Topps Traders is run by a Cardinal fan that I know has posted on this site before but I can't seem to find his name or e-mail anywhere. It's got a great blogroll and also has a handy dandy list of 2007 Topps products! Chime up in the comments and I'll give you proper recognition.

Blog Pimpin' - Yankee Doodle

This blog is from reader Brandon, he is a Yankee fan and a card collector. Baseball Cards & More is pretty cool because like this blog here Brandon writes about dang near everything. Pack busts, card news, card trades, real trades, Santa cards and sometimes just random stuff he picked up at a card show.

Brandon also likes the art of the deal and has a blog devoted to his trades. I've already found the 1991 Bowman Chipper Jones he needs, so find something else to trade him on the list.

Blog Pimpin - Gettin' Sticky

I've been introduced to some amazing stuff recently and this is one of the amazingest. Reader Fleerfan has a blog dedicated to one of the best things in the universe, Fleer Logo Stickers.

I love Fleer logo stickers and The Fleer Sticker Project has a bunch of the really really old stickers that are seldom seen. Not only that, there is also a post on hobby pioneers Larry Fritsch and Renata Galasso that is just outstanding. Fleerfan also recently offered me some 1982 Fleer logo stickers on one of my old posts as well. Unlike Pete Carroll coaching the Falcons, that is something I

Blog Pimpin' - Rickey Loves Blogs About Rickey

Dayf also loves blogs about Rickey. Reader Brad loves Rickey period, as can be seen in the "Man of Steal" Rickey Henderson Collectibles blog.

He's only three posts into the blog, but I've already seen three of the oddballiest oddball Rickey Henderson items around. Thing is, I actually have one of 'em. I can't wait to see what pops up next.

Blog Pimpin - House Party

Reader Russ is a fellow Braves fan (and more importantly, fellow Glavine disdainer) who has a blog, The House of Cardboard.

Russ is a fan of the Big Trade, but also appreciates oddball and just plain weird stuff. A kindred spirit, indeed.

Blog Pimpin' - "O" Boy

Reader Kevin has been busy lately with his 1965 Topps Project and as the newest contributer to A Pack A Day. He's not too busy though to start up a new blog dedicated to his favorite team, the Orioles Card "O" the Day.

How much does he love the Orioles? Enough to write an entire post about a 1993 Studio Harold Baines card with a big crease going through it, that's how much. Team collectors rejoice, the Orioles are now well represented.

National Pimping Blogs Day

A couple of weeks back I posted asking anyone with a card blog to let me know about it so I could post it in the links section. I got a bunch of replies and I'm going to show them all of here today. Before I get to the new blogs though, I'd like to give props to the old ones. These here are some of the Baseball card blogs I check out every day:

The Baseball Card Blog

This is the one that got me thinking I could do this myself.

Stale Gum
Nothing better than crusty, nasty, unchewable stale mid-80's Topps bubble gum. Always Be Collecting.

Wax Heaven
This guy posts more than I do! Mostly because I'm too busy watching his box break videos.

Thorzul Will Rule
Without him, I'd be sunk on A Pack A Day.

Indians Baseball Cards. Always.
White Sox Cards
Atlanta Cards
Gotta love team collectors. There needs to be at least one blogger per team out there.

Squeezeplay Cards
This guy knows how to bust wax.

A Pack A Day
Auto-Matic for the People
I write for these so I better check 'em often.

These are all in my RSS feed. If your blog isn't on there, pester me and I'll check it out.

I'll be posting the new ones that were sent in throughout the day, go ahead and check these out in the meantime!

This Is Exactly Why I Want You Guys To Speak Up

So I posted back here that I wanted anyone with a blog to let me know about it so I could add it to my blogroll. I really do like stealing from reading other people's card stuff. I only got one new blog, but boy am I glad I did. Reader Russ is the proprietor of The House of Cardboard. Russ hasn't updated in a while and right now I sympathize with him. Between holidays and work and bills and laundry piling up and the toilet seat breaking (just broke! I got a fat butt, but come on already) and the garbage man coming at seemingly random intervals and all kind of other nonsense I'm surprised I've posted at all. Well, I looked though his archives and found this post on some pack breaks from Target. This comment on Tom Glavine is what really got me:

Tom and I have a love/hate relationship with each other. I have always been a Braves fan and after the 2002 season, he basically spit in my face, called my momma names and ran over my dog. Now you can say Glavine wanted more money or that John Schuerholz just screwed the whole thing up, but I'm sticking with the theory that it was all Glavine's fault.

YES!!!!!!!! Finally I found someone who agrees with me on Tommy Turncoat! There's at least one other person who won't look at me funny or flat out call me "not a true Braves fan" just because I don't like Tom Glavine. I understand all the reasons why I should like him and I should be glad he's back. But I don't. I'm not going to like him ever again. Am I glad he'll be pitching for the Braves in 2008? Sure. I wish he had pitched for them in 2007, to be honest (and so do the Mets). He'll be a decent back of the rotation option who will win 10 games or so assuming the arm doesn't fall off. He's only getting 8 million a year which isn't that bad assuming he can eat up 150-180 good innings. Giving up our 1st round draft pick to the Mets while we get nothing for Andruw galls me, but that's a front office problem. Do I hope he'll pitch well and maybe even stick around the organization awhile? Sure, although I don't want him anywhere near out postseason roster. I'm not going to flat out boo him anymore, but he'll have to do something spectacular for me to cheer for him.

I've spouted off on why the whole 2002 thing pissed me off so badly before and I'm not rehashing it here. Every time I do so I seemingly get flack about how I don't know the full details of Tom's contract or the negotiation between him and Schuerholz and that's true, I don't. I do know something about a simple economic concept called an Opportunity Cost. Opportunity cost means that if someone uses an economic resource in one way, the cost is that it can't be used in another way. For example, if you sell a piece of land, you can't build a house to live in on it. If you eat the box of cookies you got from Grandma, you can't bring them to the New Year's party to share. (burp) If you pay your mortgage, you won't be able to buy that three-box case of Sport Kings. And so on.

I don't think anyone disputes that Tom got a better monetary offer from the Mets, although the amount is in dispute. Tom got more money to go to the Mets, but what was the cost? First he didn't have Andruw Jones snagging fly balls behind him in center field and instead relied on Jeff Duncan, Timo Perez and Tsuyoshi Shinjo to catch his fly balls. His ERA jumped a full run and a half that first season, so take that how you will. Who knows who would win the division if he stayed with the Braves, but other than 2006 he sure didn't have any postseason opportunities. What about his family? Tom has been really weepy about how he hated to leave his family behind when he signed with the Mets. Why wasn't that taken into account when he decided he simply could not work with Schuerholz? Again, an opportunity cost that doesn't show up in the Accountant's books, but is much more real than any line in a ledger. How about advertising opportunities? I seem to remember him having a few local endorsement deals here in the ATL, did he make as much in New York? If he stayed here, he would be first in line to take up Hank Aaron's mantle as Mr. Brave. How many future opportunities would that have given to Tom? Now he's a great player who will still get sponsor deals in Atlanta, but they're sure not naming the street in front of the stadium after him. Tom got more money, but also gave up a lot to get that extra cash. I'll root for him at a game (as long as he doesn't have one of his patented first inning meltdowns), I'll still collect his cards and I'm glad that he'll (likely) end his career with the Braves and go into the Hall with an A on his cap. But after the crap he pulled in 2002, I simply can never be a devoted fan ever again, and there are others who agree with me. One more cost of putting on that Mets uniform.

Hey! How'd I miss this?

So I click on a link to Wax Heaven to check out a new post and a link over at his blogroll catches my eye: Atlanta Cards. Hey, I'm from Atlanta... I like cards! This blog is for me!

So I click and am greeted by an awesome pic of a screaming Tuna. Check it out, it's a good enough post that I don't have to rehash today's "Parcells is all ready to sign, oh wait, he's not" flustercluck. There's also a sweet looking Warrick Dunn jersey card and Jamaal Anderson Letterman card. Seriously, how'd I miss this? There's even a link to this blog on there, so Rocco is either a reader or Blogger just automatically enters my site in any card-related blogrolls.

I said it before, I'll say it again:

IF YOU READ THIS AND YOU HAVE A CARD-RELATED BLOG TELL ME!

I am a
*ahem* I am a sucker for card blogs and I'm an easy touch if you want a link. I even stuck with Cincy Reds Cards and was rewarded today with a post of a nice looking Sean Casey Auto. That reminds me, I need to send an e-mail about a Maddux...

I know my links are a little junky at the moment, but I'll clean 'em up eventually. In the meantime let me know what you guys are up to!
