Your regularly scheduled card post has been cancelled due to Hobbits

HOBBBBBBBIIIITTTTTTTSSSSSSS

I'd forgotten how much I loved this series. Plus I have an irrational man-crush on Martin Freeman so I'm kinda agog about the whole Hobbit trilogy right now. I have my ticket in hand and will be heading to the theater shortly.

Three things I'm looking forward to seeing in this series:

1: Dent, Arthur Dent as Bilbo Baggins. I'm not kidding about my man-crush. I'm the only person I know who loves and will passionately defend the film version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

2: Magneto as Gandalf. Ok so it's Gandalf as Gandalf as Richard the 3rd as Magneto as Gandalf. I'll pretty much watch anything with Sir Ian in it.

3: DWARF MADNESS OVERLOAD. I'm sure Peter Jackson will do a good job with the dwarf antics, but this is my personal vision for the trilogy in sketchy cartoon format:

This post isn't completely devoid of cards, here's a complete 2006 Topps Lord of the Rings Masterpieces set that you'll be seeing more of soon.

I haven't seen any Hobbit cards out yet. I'm sure they'll show up eventually. In the meantime here's my one and only bit of official Hobbit merchandise in my collection: a HeroClix figure of Gandalf.

With his trusty steed, Rarifax, of course.

(you thought you would get a short Hobbit break from ponies, didn't ya. LOLNOPE)

Don Sutton called me Double Deuce

Before I even start rambling, I have a public service announcement:

ALWAYS BRING A SHARPIE TO THE GAME. ALWAYS.

So I'm standing with my friend in the SunTrust club room at Turner Field after probably the best game I will ever go to in my life. I know while it's happening that it's quite likely the best time I'll ever have at a baseball game and I'm cool with that. I had the realization that every subsequent game I go to will not be diminished by the fact that the experience is far inferior to that of this game, but instead will be enhanced by the good feelings I get as the baseball atmosphere brings to mind this near-perfect ballgame. If you believe in the Zen of Base and Ball, you could say that tonight, I was Enlightened.

I have to explain further. I knew I was going to the game, and i knew that they were really good seats. I've sat in company seats before and they were very good. A few rows behind the visitor's dugout. I remember one time Rafael Ramirez was playing for the Astros and a buddy of his was waylaid by an usher as he walked toward the dugout, but Rafael said something in Spanish and his buddy got to go anyway. Those were really good seats and I thought I knew what I was in for. No, I had no clue.

These were not merely really good seats, these were Oh My God These Are Possibly The Best Seats Ever Seats. The I Don't Belong Here But Here I Am Anyway Seats. My friend tried to explain to me how good these seats were, but I didn't listen. He tried to explain to me that I needed to bring lots of fives and ones to tip all the servers but I figured they were like the ushers I've seen at Hawks and Thrashers games who take your order and then you pay them when they get back with your food. I didn't realize this section was catered by Dantana's and had Tapas with scallops and shrimp sitting out for the taking and the server would bring you a Yuengling just because you asked. The food was just the appetizer, The main course was outside in our seats.

There's no way I can describe the seats right now with any justice. I took a ridiculous amount of pictures and as soon as I can download them and develop them I will show them off. I can't do it at 12:By God AM though. Here's the best I can do right now to describe these seats. Imagine you are at a fast food joint. McDonald's, Chick-Fil-A, The Varsity, whatever. Imagine you are second in line to the counter. The cashier behind the counter is Jason Heyward. What'll ya have? THAT'S how good these seats were.

The actual game was fantastic. Tommy Hanson pitched a gem. Billy Wagner got a save. Rick Ankiel got to every ball that was hit anywhere near the outfield. Freddie Freeman make a good debut where he got robbed by the ump on one at bat, but proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can play first base in the majors. Raw Dog Brooks Conrad reached down and grabbed a handful of dirt to rub on his hand and bat before every plate appearance. Omar and Marteeen hit like the couple of All-Stars that they are. And Jason Heyward - the guy whose name and number I was wearing on my t-shirt - went four for four with every hit being a rocket. And the Braves beat the Mets. You can't get better than that.

So back to the beginning, I'm standing in the SunTrust club room at Turner Field after probably the best game I will ever go to in my life. I'm hanging out with my buddy just sort of winding down after the experience. People are talking and drinking and generally having fun at the bar. Our server from earlier in the evening brought us some of the Butter Pecan Popcorn you see above. My friend has asked for some during the game, but they had ran out. She found some bags and brought him the two he requested and had an extra one for me. This stuff is fantastic. It's like little crunchy balls of pure butter with some pecan pralines thrown in for good measure. So we're standing there with our popcorn and my friend is teasing me about how I totally didn't expect these seats would be this good when all of a sudden Don Sutton comes down the stairs and walks right by me.

Repeat: Hall of Fame pitcher and Braves Broadcaster Don Sutton just walked right by me.

I see this, turn to my friend and tell him of course I didn't expect to have a Hall of Famer walk by me in a bar after the game. Nope, I didn't expect that at all.

Here's a little more explanation. My friend told me that we might get a chance at some autographs so to bring some baseball cards. Last night, I picked out some cards of current Braves players and a few coaches and broadcasters in the hopes of maybe getting one or two signed. I managed to find the entire starting lineup, most of the bench, all of the rotation and a good chunk of the bullpen. And Bobby Cox of course. The only players I was missing was Alex Gonzalez (looked but couldn't find a single card) and Jonny Venters (flaked and forgot to bring one). in that pile of cards was not one Don Sutton. I was looking through my Braves boxes and picked out broadcasters like Lemke, Glavine and Smoltz, but I didn't think of Don at the time because the cards I have of him are vintage and in my Braves binder and not the boxes of random Braves flotsam. We ended up getting stuck in traffic on the way so I ultimately ended up leaving the cards in the car rather than lug them in to the game. I didn't leave the blue Sharpie that I hoped would sign those cards in the car though, that remained in my pocket.

I'm standing there utterly dumbstruck that I'm in the same room breathing the same oxygen as Don Sutton when my buddy pipes up "why don't you go get his autograph?". Autograph? Get? Me? I can do that? Oh yeah! I can! So I did.

There was a small line at Don's table. A hello, a please sign, a hi Don. After chatting with the guy in front of me while I stood there grinning like a goofy schmuck, Don looked at me standing there like a galoot and said to the guy "Looks like you brought your bodyguard!"

I immediately went into dorky fan mode, and enjoyed every second of it. I shook Don's hand (Same one he won 324 games with, I realized afterward) and told him how glad I was that he was announcing with the Braves again. He said he was glad to be back and then I meant to say that I was sad when he left the Braves' announcing crew but I was able to hear him call a few games for the Washington Nationals and I enjoyed hearing him call a game even if he wasn't doing a Braves game but I my mind was malfunctioning at this point and I actually said "I got to hear a few games that you did for the Nationals and that was pretty cool". I always say stupid stuff like that when I'm talking to someone that I'm really impressed with, it must be some kind of primal defense mechanism kicking in. I have not gotten mauled by a celebrity yet, so it works really well. Don corrected me and said that he belongs with the Braves and that he's glad to be back here. Or something to that effect, I don't remember it clearly because like I said my brain was malfunctioning and I don't recall the words he used exactly. I finally asked him for his autograph and Don signed his name on the only thing that vaguely resembled memorabilia that I had on my person and I thanked him and that's when Don called me Double Deuce because I was wearing a #22 Jason Heyward shirt.

And that's how I got Don Sutton's signature on a Braves vs. Mets Gameday program featuring Rick Ankiel.

Thanks, Don, for capping a perfect night. Your fan Double Deuce the Bodyguard will always see you as a Brave no matter how much those Dodger fans protest. (The Nats game you called was cool though, I really enjoyed that)

Tickets, please

Bad Wax, creator of awesome custom cards, has put out a call for some scans of ticket stubs for a project he's working on. I've been meaning to post some of my ticket stubs for a long time and the request has helped me break through my procrastination and ennui for once and actually do it. I've already posted quite a few ticket stubs including a really nice one. You're welcome to any of these that look good, Mike. No need to send a card, I just enjoy looking at the ones you create.

Olympics:

The Olympics were in my town and I got to see Cuba kick the pants off of the USA squad.

Baseball:

I didn't get to go to a game in 1995, but I did go to game 1 in 1999. No clue where the ticket is though.

I went to see this game with cousin Tim from Pennsylvania. He rooted for the Phillies, got me a Phils cap which I wore everywhere for months and got utterly totally perschnockled. No clue how we made it home. Awesome game.

This was probably a fireworks game. My family went to a lot of those. I'll bet the Saturday game was a day game so they did them on Friday.

Don't expect a story for every game. At least not right now.

Fred McGriff's 300th home run. Yes, I wrote that on the ticket. My friend admonished me for doing so because it would 'ruin the value'. Didn't care then, don't care now. I saw Fred McGriff's 300th homer!

Three nondescript late '90s Ticketmaster Braves tickets.

This one's not for a game, but the 2000 All Star Game Fan Fest. That thing was AWESOME. A baseball fan/card collector's dream.

I miss the Expos. I must have gotten this ticket from my uncle, it cost more than all the previous Braves tickets combined.

Somewhere in the early '00s, tearing ticket stubs was replaces by scanning barcodes, resulting in pristine tickets like this one.

I slipped a minor league ticket in there while you weren't looking. This is from the  days when my future wife lived in Nashville. A five hour + drive up mountains from Athens, GA. Good times.

Football:

This is the opening game of the 1995 season and the first ever regular season game for the Carolina Panthers. This was one of the most entertaining games of my life if for no other reason than the rabidly insane Panthers fans sitting in front of us in full gear screaming "WE DON'T SUCK! WE DON'T SUCK!!!" as the Panthers fought tooth and nail with my Birds all game long.

Falcons/Saints is the greatest football rivalry among terrible teams ever period.

My financial aid got all screwed up when I was a freshman so I had a horrific time trying to buy student tickets. It was worth it when I finally got got to see a game between the hedges.

The Bulldogs and Jackets rivalry is traditionally held on Thanksgiving weekend, meaning most of the time my tickets either got locked in the dorms where I couldn't get to them or I was on some family vacation thing. Thus, the unused ticket here.

Arena football is a fun little game. The league went bust and the Force are sadly dead and gone now.

Basketball:

This is the first Hawks game I ever went to where Dominique wasn't playing. I hate this ticket.

These tickets are useless. There's not even a date on them. I need to find some good Hawks tickets.

Hockey:

Of all the defunct Atlanta teams (and there's a bunch of 'em) I miss the Atlanta Knights the most of all of them.  ...Gave proooof through the KNIGHTS!!!!! that our flag was still theeere...

I don't even know if I went to this game. I got a keepsake ticket saver for the Thrashers 2000-2001 season and for the life of me I can't remember if I went to this game or if I bought it at the souvenir shop and the ticket came with the binder. I was at the Thrasher's very first win ever in Nassau Colosseum against the Islanders, but I've managed to hide that ticket from myself.

Entertainment:

When the music came on and the words scrolled down the screen I cried from joy. I am not ashamed to admit this.

Aw yeah... Tom Petty. I'm not entirely convinced that I was an adult in 1995 though.

This show kicked ass. This was seen in Nashville with the future wife. Two days later I was back in Athens for.....

My favorite band. This is the greatest concert I have ever seen or ever will see. There's a great story behind this ticket, but it's almost 1:00am and I have to work tomorrow so that will have towait for another post.

Feel free to swipe any of these images for your custom card making needs. If you need a better scan just let me know.

Random stream of conciousness thoughts on today's game

I have GOT to start leaving at least two hours before first pitch. Period. I dawdled today, left an hour and a half before game time and got off the exit to Turner field just in time to see the flyover. We got to our seats in time to see the beginning of the second inning, but alas, the score was pretty much settled by then.

I always screw up parking. If I don't flat out miss the exit, I end up in the wrong lane for my lot or end up trying to get into a permit only lot. Today I turned too early and ended up in a $20 ripoff lot. The bright side is it was right next to the interstate so getting on the road was actually pretty easy.

I found out there was a $3 surcharge on tickets bought the day of the game. It might have been just for this game though - I've never seen that before. I'd rather give the Braves my money instead of Ticketmaster getting it anyway.

In my haste to get into the game I forgot to gawk over Maddux's newly retired number. I regret that.

I didn't even bother to check out the gift shop for cards. Again, I need to be getting there early for this stuff. I did get my son one of those foam #1 hands ($10?!?) and remembered to hit the penny squisher this time.

The seats were way up there on the first base side. They worked out well for three reasons:
  1. I got aisle seats with a decent view of the first base side and it wasn't a hassle to get up when we wanted.
  2. We were directly facing the fireworks that were shot off above the Club 755 level  and we were high enough so they were just about right in front of us.
  3. Scantily clad women EVERYWHERE and up and down those steps all day. If I had a dollar for every time I saw cleavage today I'd have eleventy bazillion dollars. Seveny bazillion after taxes.

Whenever I arrive late to a game I never get my GameDay program at the gate. I always manage to scrounge a discarded one in the stands though.

There were lots of guys resting today. Conrad, Hinske, Diaz and Blanco all got starts. Chipper got in the game late thankfully.

The fans were somewhat subdued today. I think the heat got to us a little. That and the lack of offensive threats.

Huddy was dealing. I don't know what he did in the first to give up the two runs that ultimately decided the game, but he didn't deserve a loss today.

Ricky Nolasco didn't deserve to lose either though and he didn't. Strikeouts everywhere! Gosh!

Friggin Uggla. #@$%!!

We wandered up to the Coca-Cola Sky field after the 5th inning. Got there just in time to see Big Mac's homer.

For the second straight year, my son ran the base up there at the Coca-Cola pavillion. also for the second straight year, I tried to video it and somehow buggered it up. The camera's supposed to go when you hit the START button, right?!?

The new Coke Bottle sucks, I don't care if it has a video screen on it now. Bring back the old one with all the baseball equipment on it.

Big ovation when announcing the All Stars. J-Hey got the hugest ovation. That man owns this town already.

Moments after scolding my kid for not getting his drink out of the way of the aisle while people were trying to pass, I dropped a peanut shell onto the guy sitting in front of me. D'oh!

Biggest ovation: Chipper Jones coming in to pinch hit for Hinske in the 8th.
Biggest boo: The Marlins intentionally walking Chipper.

Jersey Totals:
Heyward #22 and Jones #10 were in abundance. The two were neck and neck for the battle for #1 most worn jersey.
I only saw one #7 Frenchy jersey THANK GOD. There were dozens being worn last game.
McCann was well represented. As was Hudson. Also saw Prado, Escobar, Hanson. No Glaus, Wagner or Jurrjens which surprised me.
Old School representin': Aaron, Murphy, Glavine, McGriff A. Jones. No Smoltz.
Most anachronistic jersey seen: Fred McGriff red Sunday alternate jersey.
Soccer football jerseys beat American football jerseys 3-1. The one American Football jersey was a bootleg Falcons #7.

Vuvuzelas: 1. It was kinda weak. They must only be annoying when they number in the thousands.

Final Score: Marlins 3, Braves 2. Disappointing, the pitching was solid but the bats just weren't there today. Still a good game, can't complain about it.

After the game there was an hour or so before it got dark enough to shoot the fireworks. I guess they started at 5:00pm just in case the Braves decided to do another 20 inning game on the 4th. To fill the time before it got dark they had a band play. Yacht Rock Revue.  OH. MAH. GAWD. AM GOLD. The cheese! It burns! Even Worse: I LIKED HALF THE SONGS THEY PLAYED. Good Lord I am old.

The fireworks: awesome as usual. No shrapnel hit the seats causing small fires this time. The song list leaned a little to country for my tastes, but country is practically their marketing plan right now.

My favorite song to hear fireworks to: Stars and Stripes Forever. I love me some Sousa.

Cracker Jack Prize:

Benjamin Franklin foldee. Highly appropriate for today, no?

Why does it always rain whenever I get free tickets

I've been to two games this year and both had rain delays of over an hour and a half each. Today's game was kind of crummy too, with the Braves offense going cold and Chipper making the error that cost them the game. However, it was still nice to get to the ballpark and thanks to the delay I finally got to see Tooner Field. Also...

2009 Braves Season Tickets are AWESOME!!! I wish I had bought a package just for the tickets now. Photos soon if any of them came out any good.

Rod Gives Me a Ticket

I sure hope Rod isn't a cop, cause I just got two tickets from him. Rod sent me an e-mail out of the blue stating he had some oddball's I'd be interested in, so I accepted his generous offer. Here's what Rod sent:

1991 AuthenTicket David Justice

I've seen these before about a decade ago. They were on a clearance table at some sports memorabilia place in a mall. Even on clearance, they were selling them for $15 if I'm not mistaken (might have been $10) so I don't really want to know how much they were originally. They were in a plastic clamshell display with the ticket in one pocket, a trading card in another and an enormously long sales spiel which explained that ticket stubs were some of the rarest and most sought after memorabilia items and now YOU can have this limited edition (at least 109632 made) AuthenTicket of this superstar player which will only increase in value blah blah blah. It's been over a decade since I saw that packaging but I can still smell the stench of desperation from that sales pitch on the packaging. The fake ticket (which is completely blank on the back) wasn't the only thing in the package though.

Thankfully there was a card in there too to save the day. It's a full hologram which is quite good for 1991, although not quite the quality of Upper Deck's later holograms. Dave's bat changes into a tomahawk when you move the card which is a nice touch. Rod sent two of these so one is going to get sent off in the Christmas giveaway.

Hank Aaron playing card

This was pretty cool, I'd never seen this Aaron playing card before. What fool made him the 7 of Diamonds? Hank is a KING, period! I flipped the card over and found out what this was from.

This was a playing card set inserted into a special package of the MLB All Century Team videos. I also remember seeing and subsequently passing up on this as well. Yeah, I wanted the cards, but the whole set was thirty or forty bucks. I don't buy a deck of cards for forty bucks. It's definitely a neat oddball though and a good addition to my Hank collection.

Rod added a few more goodies in the package. A bunch of 1991 Donruss series 1 Braves, a 1992 Studio Ron Gane, and 2008 Upper Deck cards of Chipper Jones and Clint Sammons.
Great stuff Ron, expect a few goodies in return!

What a Game

Games like this is why baseball is the best. Chipper bashing a homer and increasing his NL Batting lead. Smoltz taking a no hitter into the 6th before JJ Hardy ruined his day. A Canadian pop star taking the lead late in the game with a homer. Scott Thorman tying the game on the Braves' last out. Joey Devine facing a bases loaded situation and not giving up a moon shot. Mark Teixeira - whom I officially have a man crush on now - winning it in the 11th after Ricky Weeks butchered a potential double play ball. Why oh why does the season have to end in a week?
