Zman Repack Box & Contest - Pack 7: 1990 Fleer

Ok, last pack for the contest. There will be no trivia tonight, but if you want me to keep doing weird questions occasionally from old magazines for gits and shiggles let me know. Here's the final trivia standings:

Chris Harris 2.5 points
MMayes 2 points
Bay Rat North West 1.5 points
Don 1.5 points
Groat 1 point
Madding 1/2 point
MDA 1/2 point
Night Owl 1/2 point

These points will be added to the pack ranking totals. And here's the rankings going into the final pack:

90 Score
90 Donruss
88 Score
89 Topps
88 Donruss
89 Donruss

Can Fleer catch up to 1990 Score? Even if I pull the top three valued cards from 1991 (Dave Justice RC - $2.75, Kevin Maas RC -$2.00 and Ken Griffey Jr $1.75) it'd still have a ways to go to pass Score. Let's rip.

Yankees sticker 0¢
227 Danny Darwin 5¢
136 Wally Joyner 10¢
85 Jimmy Key 5¢
17 Gene Nelson 5¢
570 Jeff Parrett 5¢
94 Todd Stottlemyre 5¢
472 Bill Landrum 2¢
366 Allan Anderson 2¢
652 Matt Kinzer & Wayne Edwards Major League Prospects 5¢
477 Rick Reed 5¢
510 Keith Comstock 5¢
253 Willie McGee 5¢
267 Mike Boddicker 5¢
587 Steve Rosenberg 5¢
425 Rick Mahler 2¢

Total Book Value: 74¢

Worst pack by far. Wally Joyner is the only player who can even remotely be considered a star. Three cards are damaged, Mahler by wax and Landrum and Allenson have a ding on the left side. Oh God, how to pick three cards from this pack...

Wally Joyner

Wally's star faded, but he's still an Atlanta native who had a pretty nice career.

Jimmy Key

He was pretty good I guess. He beat the Braves three times in the World Series, the jerk.

Todd Stottlemyre

I think I pulled three of his cards out of seven packs. This one is interesting due to the noirish shadows.

OH MY LORD THAT PACK SUCKED. Here are the final rankings:

#1 1990 Score $8.20
#2 1990 Donruss $5.25
#3 1988 Score $1.80
#4 1989 Topps $1.70
#5 1988 Donruss $1.02
#6 1989 Donruss 77¢
#7 1990 Fleer 74¢

Give me a few minutes to calculate the scores and I'll post the winner.

Zman Repack Box & Contest - Pack 6: 1988 Score

Running a little late tonight folks. No one picked a pack for today so I flipped a coin and '88 Score won the toss. Here are the pack rankings so far:

1 90 Score
2 90 Donruss
3 89 Topps
4 88 Donruss
5 89 Donruss

The trivia also proved to be difficult last night. I didn't realize it would be so hard to pick out one of these paragons of the game:

Who woulda thunk Rudy Seanez would outlast them all?

Here's the point standings:

Chris Harris 2 points
MMayes 2 points
Bay Rat North West 1 point
Don 1 point
Madding 1/2 point
MDA 1/2 point
Night Owl 1/2 point

These points will be added to points you get for correctly predicting the pack rankings. The winner will get... what did I say the winner will get again? I forget. You'll find out I guess. Here's tonight's trivia question:

Here's an interesting letter to the Editor in the issue:

You can click on the image to enlarge it and get a better look. I've blanked out part of the letter for this question. Here's the essential passage in case you don't want to squint at the image:

The Topps Company has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it will exploit any misery, profit on any disaster, in order to make a quick buck. The latest obscenities that they have foisted upon the public are the ____________ cards.

Tonight's Trivia Question:

Fill in the blank with the correct card/product.

BONUS POINTS:

1/2 a point to everyone who can make me laugh Match Game style. To get the bonus you must at least make me stifle an audible laugh.

As you can see this contest is wide open here. Here's the pack:

108 Les Straker 5¢
5 Mark McGwire $1.00
20 Tony Fernandez 5¢
151 Scott Bradley 5¢
169 Cecil Cooper 10¢
171 Pat Sheridan 5¢
21 Fisk Smacks Dramatic HR 0¢
264 Luis Salazar 5¢
296 Bill Wegman 5¢
304 Paul O'Neill 10¢
372 Spike Owen 5¢
388 Mike Felder 5¢
392 Jose Rijo 5¢
538 Walt Terrell 5¢
542 Joe Boever 5¢
447 Greg Booker 5¢
612 Shawn Hillegas 5¢
628 Pete Stanicek 5¢

Total Book Value: $1.90

That extra dime of book value from a larger pack size might end up being critical. I love this set but all my Score cards are a disaster after my Election Night Special. I really need to sit down and sort out this set once and for all. Here are the best three:

Mark McGwire

This is the thing that pisses me off about the Hall of Fame voting. The writers have absolutely no problem with completely ignoring Big Mac's body of work and refusing to vote for him over his trainwreck performance in front of the Congressional Committee To Meddle In Useless Things In A Time Of War. Ok, fine. Drugs are bad, even if there's no hard proof he took anything illegal at the time. Whatever, it's their vote. However, they simultaneously refuse to vote for Dale Murphy - the cleanest athlete on the face of the earth - because he was two homers short of a round number and he was lousy the last couple years of his career. BBWAA voters: you're all fucking idiots. ALL of you.

Do You Remember: Fenway Park October * 21 * 1975 *

This card is essentially worthless, but it's PUDGE in his greatest moment.

Four Way Tie For Third

Blue uni on a blue bordered card...
Red uni on a red bordered card...
Green uni on a green bordered card...
And an orange uni on an orange bordered card.
I love Score.

Last pack tomorrow: 1990 Fleer.

Zman Repack Box & Contest - Pack 5: 1990 Donruss

Ok, back in the saddle after a brief respite (and about 100 games of Mario Kart*) so it's time to get back to ripping those Zman packs. First though, you'll see a poll on the top right. You all snubbed my '85 Topps Super boxes so I'll rip a box of something more recent. Your choices are:

2008 Upper Deck Series 1&2 Combo Blaster

Or the MEESTAIRY BOCKS:

It's got autograph cards in it, so it can't POSSIBLY suck, can it?

Choose wisely.

Ok, the answer to the last trivia question was:

Chuck Jones was interviewed about his work on Upper Deck Comic Ball cards. I'm more of a Tex Avery and Bob Clampett fan myself.

Ok, now for today's question. There is a dealer's ad for Classic Best minor league cards (the ads are the best part of this magazine) touting a Mike Schmidt Reading Phillies card that Beckett values at over $1,500. So of course YOU should go out and buy some extremely limited (less than 2100 cases!) Classic Best minor league cards in order to get the next thousand dollar minor league card. In the ad, there is a list of players with the caption "Could one of these players be the next Mike Schmidt?"

Today's Trivia Question:

Name any one of the players on the list. (one point)

Bonus Essay Question:

Explain why even if a card of a player who had Walter Johnson's arm, Babe Ruth's bat, Rickey Henderson's legs and Michael Jack Schmidt's mustache was in that set, his card would never ever ever be worth as much as that mythical Reading Phillies card. (one point)

Ok, onto the the pack of 1990 Donruss at Captain Canuck's request. I didn't pull the last two cards he needed, but I've got them held for ransom anyway.

Carl Yastrzemski's full, pouty lips 0¢
532 Atlee Hammaker 5¢
419 Tim Laudner 5¢
424 Ken Caminiti 5¢
453 Greg Litton 5¢

30 Sandy Alomar Jr. 50¢
587 Willie Frazer 5¢
592 Tony Castillo 5¢
596 Pete Harnisch 5¢
2 Steve Sax Diamond King 5¢
659 Nolan Ryan 5000 K's error $4.00
193 Dennis Cook 5¢
197 Orel Hershiser 10¢
622 Mark Guthrie 5¢
626 Paul Sorrento 5¢
BC-25 Von Hayes MVP 5¢

Total Book Value: $5.25

Another big money card! Nice! This wasn't a spectacular pack overall, but there's a couple of minor stars in there along with the Ryan error card. There's the top three:

Nolan Ryan 5000 K's

I double checked this card in my phonebook sized price guide and the error card is actually an error in Tuff Stuff. They have the 5000 K's and King of Kings cards swapped on their checklist, so what appears to be an error card in their guide is actually the corrected version. However, since I'm going by that price guide and they list the 5000 K's #659 as the error that's the price I'm going by. It's still a pretty cool card either way.

Orel Hershiser

This guy pitched his ass off in the '80s and '90s, but if you even mention that maybe he should get a 10% discount at the Hall of Fame gift shop you hear nothing but groans and harrumphs and "It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Very Good". Well you know what?? Maybe we NEED a Hall of Very Good! For the Orel Hershisers and Dale Murphys and Al Rosens and Bill Freehans and Minnie Minosos and Kirk Gibsons and Moose Skowrons and Frank Tananas and Lou Whitakers and Frank Howards and Bobby Gritches and Mark Graces. Then ordinary slobs like us could go hang out at the Working Man's Hall of Fame and let all the elitist snobs spend some quality time with Joe Morgan.

Steve Sax Diamond King

Ok, this selection is iffy. I could have chosen the Alomar Rated Rookie (second year in a row!), the young Caminiti in the 'stros rainbow uni or the Atlee Hammaker card where I like the photo for some reason. Instead I chose a Diamond King of a player I never liked and still don't think was very good. Why? CRAZY LAZER BATTLE BACKGROUND. I think Dick Perez was starting to lose it at this point, prompting the more naturalistic Diamond Kings for the next few years (Before he lost his mind again and went all Peter Max in '94)

Ok! '90 Donruss was good, but couldn't beat the '90 Score pack. Only two packs left, Score and Fleer. Choose... AND PERISH.

Zman Repack Box & Contest - Pack 4: 1989 Topps

Three packs down, four to go. So far the pack standings are as follows:

1 1990 Score
2 1988 Donruss
3 1989 Donruss

Can 1989 Topps possibly be stinkier than 1989 Donruss? It's possible, at 5 cents per common and 15 cards a pack, a pack of all commons could theoretically be valued at 75 cents. If one is horribly waxed up, 72 cents. Isn't is funny how the price guide listed even the worst possible pack as more valuable than the pack's retail cost? Amazing how that works. This pack will have nothing but rookies and error cards in it, so that will not matter. You didn't know thee were errors in 1989 Topps did you? There's a Bob Welch card with no career stat line on the back. Gues which rookies were big in 1991? Biggio and Smoltz you say? Nope. They are 40¢ and 25¢, respectively. No, you wanted Rob Dibble ($1.00), Chris Sabo ($1.50) and Sandy Alomar Jr. ($1.75). Let's do a trivia question and then open 'er up to count all the Sheffields I pull.

Trivia Question:

There are ads for oddball and non-sports stuff all over the May 1991 Tuff Stuff. Desert Storm cards, RockCards, Twin Peaks cards, even a set of professional jockeys. One of the features in the magazine is an interview with a very famous artist who worked on a different oddball set that also was being released at that time.

1) Who was the artist? and 2) what was the set?

Half a point each for these answers. The wrapper of this pack is really loose so I hope no one stole my Steve Avery draft pick card.

Puffy sweatshirt ad 0¢

A quick aside here... Did ANYONE ever buy one of these things? If I wore a puffy sweatshirt to school in 1991 that said "All-Star Card Collector", I would have been forced to move to another state from the embarrassment and abuse heaped upon me. Then I'd have to do it again because I'd keep wearing the stupid thing because IT WAS TOO COOL.

429 Minnesota Twins Leaders 5¢
532 Jerry Browne 5¢
659 Al Leiter 5¢
650 Kirby Puckett 25¢
404 Bob Boone All star 5¢
142 Mike Diaz 5¢
500 Jose Canseco 75¢
731 Mike Young 5¢
604 Paul O'Neill 10¢
722 Todd Stottlemyre 5¢
571 Billy Ripken 5¢
228 Nelson Santovenia 5¢
527 Dave Henderson 5¢
523 Andres Thomas 5¢
502 Duane Ward 5¢

Total Book Value: $1.70

This was a pretty good pack, especially in comparison to the Donruss ones. A Hall of Famer, one of the most infamous players of the past 20 years and a couple other decent players to top it off. We got the wrong '89 Billy Ripken, but oh well. Here's the top three:

Jose Canseco

Ok fine. Now he's fighting Danny Bonaduce. Back in 1989 he just came off a 40-40 season with a ton of RBIs and an MVP. This is about as iconic a card as '89 Topps is going to get.

Kirby Puckett

Why can't we have photos like this in Topps anymore? Kirby's half asleep and hasn't shaved, but at least you can see it's Kirby. No action shot squished by a bump at the top of the card. No generic pitcher throwing/batter at the plate that is seen in 50 other cards in the set. Just a good close up picture of a ballplayer.

Dave Henderson

I love this card. The weird shadows that don't seem to line up properly. The very odd looking warm up jacket with no collar. The hat that looks like it's made of terrycloth. All those airbrush disasters and still it's an awesome card due to Dave's broad gap toothed smile surrounded by the killer 'stache.

This pack doesn't match up to the Score, but it ain't bad. Tomorrow night: 1990 Donruss. I'm going to pull a Jose Rijo and Gary Gaetti and hold them for ransom.

Zman Repack Box & Contest - Pack 3: 1990 Score

The Donruss so far has not been stellar. I'm shifting gears to Score by request. Everyone knows the biggies in this set: Frank Thomas and Bo. I've never pulled a Thomas rookie out of this despite many attempts. Even though I have the card, I still just want to PULL it. Know what I mean? Let's see if this pack can break a dollar in book value. Score has an extra card in the pack, so they've got that 5¢ common bonus at least. First, the 1 point bonus question:

Tuff Stuff Trivia Question:

In the news section, there was an article announcing the city that would host the 1992 National card show. What city was it?

Now, let's open the pack:

46 Dave Magadan 5¢
245 Wade Boggs 25¢
248 Norm Charlton 5¢
MVP 48 Lefty Grove 0¢
$6.50
468 Gregg Jefferies 25¢
452 Andy Allanson 5¢
448 Mookie Wilson 5¢
194 Dave Righetti 5¢
197 Bud Black 5¢
192 Tim Wallach 5¢
369 Greg Hibbard 5¢
371 Jeff Brantley 5¢
389 Darren Daulton 5¢
565 Rich Monteleone 5¢
580 Randy McCament 5¢
585 Greg Vaughn 60¢

Total 1991 Book Value: $8.20

Don called it! I got the Bo! The guys who picked the '90 score as the #1 pack are rejoicing. a $6.50 card (in 1991 money) is going to be tough to beat. The '89 Donruss Griffey Jr. only booked $6.00. Remember, if you haven't already made a guess at the pack rankings, you can still do so now and only receive a 2 point penalty. Here's the top three cards:

BO

Do I even need to say anything about this card?

Wade Boggs

Is it just me or does the red border with yellow frame and purple highlights just look plain ridiculous? I think it's the purple that does the design in.

Greg Vaughn

Raise your hand if you ever opened a pack hoping for Mo and getting Greg. Can you believe he hit 355 home runs? People only remember the Devil Rays days and forget all those homers he hit in Milwaukee and San Diego. I don't think this was his actual rookie card though.

Well, this is certainly the best pack so far. Leave a comment on what you want to see next: '90 Donruss, '89 Topps, '90 Fleer or '88 Score.Don't forget to answer the trivia question!

Friday, January 16, 2009

Zman Repack Box & Contest - Pack 2: 1989 Donruss

Here's the second pack, 1989 Donruss. The '88 donruss pack ended up with a May 1991 book value of $1.02. There are five cards in the '89 set that could beat that by themselves, all rookie cards. Sheffield, Alomar, Jeffries, Sabo and the Griffey. '89 Donruss got quite a few #1 and #2 rankings so the peeps are expecting some rookies out of this pack. Before we open this up, I need to post the Tuff Stuff trivia question. This is a three parter, each part is worth 1/2 point. You can answer just one or two of the parts if you want for partial credit.

There were five major manufacturers with sets out in May 1991. Donruss, Fleer, Score, Topps and Upper Deck. Three of them bought full page color ads in this issue of Tuff Stuff. Here are the questions:

1) Which two manufacturers did not place a full page ad in this issue?

2) Which manufacturer's ad took up three pages?

3) Which ad did not use a superstar autograph to promote their product in the ad?

Bay Rat North West is currently in the lead with one trivia point.

Here's the pack:

Spahnnie's eyeball 19, 20, 21 0¢
620 Stodd Tottlemyre 5¢
614 Dave Valle 5¢
608 Manny Trillo 5¢
602 Mike LaCoss 5¢
597 Scott Medvin 5¢
586 Van Snider 5¢
592 Jeff Blauser 5¢
583 Andy Hawkins 5¢
634 Dante Bichette 10¢
361 Marvin Freeman 5¢
625 Ernie Riles 5¢
619 Adam Peterson 5¢
607 Terry Clark 5¢
613 Kevin Brown 5¢
500 Checklist 2¢

Total Book Value: 77¢

Wow, that was... ugly. I counted Dante Bichette's rookie as a minor star and I was being extremely generous. Dante wouldn't break out with the Rockies for a few years yet. About half of the pack consists of double printed cards to boot. On the bright side, the checklist card was the one to get waxed up. Here's the three 'best' cards from the pack:

Dante Bichette RC

I always think of Dante as being a lot better than he was. He had an awesome season in 1995, but the rest of his career was as a pretty good outfielder at best. Rookie cards of All-Star players with 14 year careers aren't anything to sneeze at though. Plus, he reminds me of this kid from Home Movies.

Kevin Brown

Kevin was actually a pretty amazing pitcher, but he'll only be remembered for the Kevin Brown Rule: Never, ever, ever give a pitcher a 100 million dollar contract. EVER!

Van Snider

Van only had 35 total at bats in his career, but look at the gorgeous card he got for his efforts! Classic Pose! Matching red border! Rainbow seats in the background! Don't ever let anyone say to you that Donruss cards are ugly.

Tomorrow's pack is 1990 Score. It will be posted at 9:00pm sharp. You can still make your guess on the pack rankings, but it's a one point penalty until the Score pack is posted, then it becomes a two point penalty. that one point loss might have helped out those people who picked '89 Donruss #1 though. Also: don't forget to answer the trivia questions and the vote in the box break poll up top.

Trivia Answers:

Question 1: Topps and Donruss did not have a full page ad in the magazine. I didn't even see a small ad for either, but I might have missed it. Score had a Mantle lovefest though, something Topps would replicate 15 years later.

Question 2: Upper Deck had a three page spread all touting their "Find the Nolan" insert set. Night Owl takes the half point.

Question 3: Fleer actually advertised their cards and not the chance to pull one of 2500 autographs. Can ya believe it? I have new respect for this set.

Chris Harris picked up a full point by answering questions 1 and 3, Night Owl was in first with the answer to question 2. The trivia standings are as follows:

Bay Rat North West: 1
Chris Harris: 1
Night Owl: .5

Another pack and question(s) will be up tomorrow night at 9:00.

Zman Repack Box & Contest - Pack 1: 1988 Donruss

Ok, I'm going to do something fun with these packs that zman40 sent me as a contest winner. There are seven packs that I'm opening that are from the years 1988-1990. Here are the packs:

1988 Donruss
1988 Score
1989 Donruss
1989 Topps
1990 Donruss
1990 Fleer
1990 Score

These packs all suck today, but they didn't back in the day. So, I dug up this:

This is the May 1991 issue of Tuff Stuff with David Robinson on the cover. The bottom is cut off because the magazine is about twice the size of my scanner bed. I'm going to open those 7 packs first and price the cards in that old issue of Tuff Stuff to find out the book value of these cards around opening day in '91.

YOUR MISSION IF YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT:

Rank the packs from highest total book value to the lowest total book value in 1991 prices. If you think 1989 Donruss will be the best pack, rank it #1. If you think 1990 Fleer will be the worst pack, rank it #7. You get one point for each pack in the correct slot. Simple enough? The person who gets the most points wins. I'll also be asking a question from the Tuff Stuff magazine on each pack rip. The first person to get the answer gets a bonus point. You can make your pick at any time up until right before the last pack is ripped, but I'll dock you a point for each pack I rip after this one.

So what's the prize? A card or cards equal to the total 1991 book value of all the crap out of these packs. The winner gets to choose.

First Bonus Question:

What is the caption on the cover of this magazine?

Ok, here's the '88 Donruss pack rip. Look it over and make your guesses while I take a few minutes to check the prices and scan the cards.

Hoo boy, this pack was a stinker. Not one card was in the guide, not even Yount! I counted him as a regional star though. The man won two freakin' MVPs and he's stuck in the Minor Star ghetto. What a load of crap. It's not like they didn't have room for him, the magazine is the size of a tabloid newspaper. Here's the three 'best' cards from the pack:

Robin Yount

TOTALLY saved this pack from utter oblivion. A little off center, but what the hell.

Jose Mesa RC

Look at the size of that boy's head. It's like an orange on a toothpick. A virtual planetoid. It has it's own weather system! Hurricane Jheri's about to make landfall! The fact that this is the second best card in the pack is troubling. I see #7: 88 Donruss upcoming in a lot of contest entries.

Hubie Brooks

No matter how dreadful the pack is Hubie's got a positive attitude. He makes me feel better about the whole thing. Thanks, Hubie!

Here's an interesting 1988 Donruss fact from the investment potential section in Tuff Stuff:
If Jeffries, or any of the other 39 cards which were single printed, start to perform, the set will propel even more.

There are single printed cards in this set?? I didn't think anything in this set could possibly be single printed. Maybe sextuple printed instead of octuple printed...

Up next: 1989 Donruss. I'll have it posted at 9:00pm tomorrow. Any contest entries after that time get docked one point. If you have a preference for the pack after that, let me know...

Trivia answer:
Bay Rat gets the first bonus point but recuses himself from the rest of the trivia since he has the magazine. I had a nice chuckle over the "Move Over Wilt" caption, but when you come to think about it, the Admiral had a helluva career. It's not like Olden Polynice is the one supposedly shoving Wilt off his perch.
