I screwed up my mailday video so I drew you a pony

Pretty much exactly what it says on the tin.

Here's a selection of Cubs Tom inflicted upon me in the package.

Sketch Card #4 - Twilight Starlin

"Go check out Cardboard Junkie - There might not be something about ponies on it today"

LOL NOPE

A pony a day keeps the sanity away, and with crap like this going on, who needs sanity?

Here's the 4th sketch card sent out to the peeps. Also first pony.

Chicago Cubs shortstop Twilight Starlin. No I don't know how horses could possibly play baseball. Kickball I could see. Twilight just has that bat to break some opponents' kneecaps. Hey, that kind of thing just kinda happens in Chicago. Horses have kneecaps, right?

Ok, how did this Blasphemy of Nature come about? When ponies first invaded my free time I had an idea to combine them with baseball to make both poniez and hardball 20% cooler. Or immeasurably worse, one or the other. So, cartoons where baseball players become ponified seemed like a good idea. The 2011 Heritage Starlin Castro card inspired me to put the Cub at short on my pony team. I had a short list of  ideas for drawings but didn't actually get around to drawing any of them.

Then I foolishly bought a rack pack of Bowman Platinum pretty much because Freddie Freeman was on the wrapper. 2012 Bowman Platinum will have Julio Teheran on the wrapper and I'll do it all again because Topps knows I'm a schmuck. I posted the pack rip here (interestingly enough, this is the very first appearance of a pony on the blog) and blogger Tom mentioned he liked the Cubs cards. So I packed 'em up, added a small pile of feelthy Cubs to get them out of my house and finally drew a ponified ballplayer on a sketch card to send along. The back:

What do, indeed? The Braves don't have a shortstop at all, pony or otherwise. We'll give you Prado for Twilight and a filly to be named later. This card was apparently a big hit with Tom and one of the throw in Cubs is going toward a table project he's got in the works. I want pictures when that's done! I'm pretty sure Tom sent something back but my trade piles are so disorganized that it will have to wait for later. Thanks Tom, enjoy teh ponay!

It's time to Stick the Stickers - Giganto Sticker Dump

I got a large package of stickers from Giants fan Adam Smith. Adam was fortunate enough to be the first package I received after Chris Harris' stickah bipping so he managed to complete no less than seven pages. I was going to post these one at a time but what's the point of padding my post count like that? Two-thirds of the NL Central was wiped out in one fell swoop.

I think Astros poster boy Hunter Pence was a Phillie by the time this set was released. I might be wrong.

Completed. I want a sticker update series with Bourn in a Braves uni now.

The Brewers' page features who else - Ryan Braun.

None of these stickers looke like they were pasted in right. It's making me a little nauseous.

The Cubs make my blood pressure rise so I try to avoid them as much as possible. I think that's Aramis Ramirez there?

Or maybe it's Marlon Byrd. I dunno, man.

King Felix. I know this one!

Mis-stuck stickers, cockeyed scan, three posed photos not in a tic-tac-toe row. Feeling REALLY nauseous now.

David Wright. It's a shame we have to past over some of these photos.

I hurt Dinged Corners' feelings last time I talked about the Mets. I'll be nice this time. I, um, really like their... mane?

That's Kinsler right? Michael Young would be coming from the other side of the bag.

I was certain the Rangers would win the World Series when their sticker team set was completed before the Cardinals. Certain, I say! I am a superstitious eeediot.

I spent entirely too long trying to decide if this was Joy Votto or Jay Bruce before I saw the VOTTO on the back of the jersey.

Dangit, Brandon Phillips is too good a player to be stuck sideways. I wish the stickers actually fit in the spaces.
Seven pages stuck! And I still have a few packages left to sort through. If I have time I'll show off something I sent Adam's way later tonight.

The Perfect Cubs Card

I knows a Card of the Week when I see one.

That package of '54 cards I got from Crinkly Wrappers included a few cards of coaches. You don't see a lot of coaches in Topps sets, but Topps was in the middle of a player war with Bowman at the time and I guess they needed to fill out the set. Most of the coaches they used were former MLB players including a few who were stars in their time so it was a decent way to pad a set. One of the cards is of Cubs' coach Ray Blades. Ray was an outfielder on many of the St. Louis Cardinals' Pennant winning teams of the late '20s and early '30s. His best season was in 1925 when he hit .342 over 122 games. After his playing days were over, he managed the Cardinals for a couple of seasons, was a minor league manager and coached for several different teams. In 1953 he was brought on as a coach for the Cubs resulting in this fantastic card:

Look at that man's face. That poor man's face. That is the face of a man who just watched a runaway train wipe out his brand new truck which was being driven by his wife who just ran off with his life's savings because she was having a torrid love affair with his best friend's dog. He then went to the ballpark and watched the Cubs lose to Milwaukee in the 14th. That's what I see when I look at that face.

This is absolutely perfect for a franchise as horribly forlorn as the Cubs. They are one of the two remaining teams that were a part of the original National League Charter, but they lose out on being the oldest MLB franchise because they lost two years to the Great Chicago Fire. The last time they won a World Series, they had to go beat Ty Cobb to do it. The last time they won a pennant, Harry Truman was President. They've won exactly one playoff series since 1908 and followed that up with one of the most infamous collapses in playoff history. This is not a happy franchise.

So how perfect is this card? On one of the most colorful sets in history, it has a blank white background. Ray's black & white 'action' photo is cropped in such a way that it appears as if he is pulling an errant javelin out of his chest. The Cubs logo has a completely vacant stare, as if the poor animal is trying to go into its happy place. And that sad sack photo of poor Ray... why did Topps choose that photo? Maybe the designer of that card was a fan of Norman Rockwell.

Absolutely perfect.
