Card of the Week - 1/03/10

Card of the Week is back! Featuring the greatest cheesy 90's insert ever!

1998 Donruss Crusade

In the '90s, Donruss had some of the classier inserts around. Upper Deck pioneered the AutoGamers,  Pinnacle corned the market on Dufex, Fleer was known for sheer quantity of inserts, Pacific went overboard on die cuts and Topps... Well, Topps inserts sucked. Donruss inserts had class. The Danes call it  "Quality". Donruss led the way with Diamond Kings, Elite, Spirit of the Game. They could also do cheesy and gimmicky  with the best of them, but in general they were a bit more highbrow than the rest.

In 1998, Donruss did two things: they released the apex of of '90s inserts and they dropped dead. Well. not exactly dropped dead, the company that gobbled them up (Pinnacle) went bankrupt and the company that picked up the scraps (Playoff) missed out on the baseball license, so for all intents and purposes Donruss was dead in the baseball market until 2001, when they produced one of the most ridiculous card sets ever. I digress, however.

In 1998 Donruss released a pretty solid stable of products including Donruss, Leaf, Elite and Signture Series. Of course all 5 of the competing brands (I never fully accepted that Pinnacle and Donruss were the same thing - you still had to choose between a pack of  Leaf and a pack of Pinnacle  in the card aisle) also had similar decent lineups of base, mid-level, high end and WTF products. In order to stand out from the crowd you have to have some kind of draw or gimmick to catch people's attention. To prop up their low-end products, Donruss tried Crusade.

Basically Crusade was a shiny Chrome Refractor looking card with bold colors and an eye-popping font for the name that had some kind of Midieval Times theme going on. There is no way to describe in words how fantastic these things look, you just have to see them in person. Like any Donruss gimmick worth its salt it was also horribly confusing, fractured and low-numbered.

There were three different versions of the base Crusade card. The most common Green card shown here that is numbered to 250. A better looking Purple parallel was numbered to 100 each. The scarcest and best looking Crusade card was colored Red and numbered to only 25 cards. Thanks to later shenanigans by the next incarnation of Donruss and Topps with their Moments and Milestones set, you can find cards numbered to 25 in the "please take these crappy cards free and get this junk out of my store" box at your local card shop. Back in 1998 a card numbered to 250 was an underwear-ruining experience.

The cards were pretty scarce to begin with, add to this that the set is 100 cards in size and you have a real beast of a set if you want to try to collect it. Oh, but wait there's more... This insert set was fractured amongst four different sets. 40 cards could be found in 1998 Donruss, 30 more in Leaf, and the last 30 were found in Donruss Update. Then Donruss tacked on 30 more Crusade cards of up-and -comers like Jaret Wright and Bobby Estallella in their Leaf Rookies and Stars set. In all, you have 130 cards spread over four sets. Oh but wait there's more... The first 100 cards are skip numbered across the two Donruss sets and Leaf. If you want the Ken Griffey Jr. card, you can buy 1000 cases of Leaf, you ain't gonna get him. If you want A-Rod, don't buy any Donruss. So in summary, 130 cards, numbered to 375 cards each across the parallels, spread out over 4 sets, in a seemingly random manner. Yeah, good luck with that one.

BUT DAMN, IT'S PURDY. 

Even this Helton here which is horribly flawed by a refractor seam going right through the middle (which looks like a design element in the scan, but it's not) looks utterly fantastic. Sure, it's a ridiculous set that is almost a prototype for all the the excessive parallels and nonsensical gimmickry that emerged in the 2000's but sometimes you have to distance yourself from the marketing absurdity and just enjoy the beauty of the design.

Rack Pack Madness Part 1 - 2010 Topps Update

Throughout the latter months of 2010, I was compulsively picking up Rack Packs of various Topps products from retail establishments at an alarming rate. There were several reasons for this. Topps' ruination of blasters with patches and parallels, a lack of compelling products worth dropping more than a fiver on, interesting shiny gimmickry on the Chromy packs and my gnawing addiction that precludes me from walking out of a Target without some cardboard. I need to get this all out of my system so as not to ruin another year blowing cash on retail wax so I'm going to showcase some racks this week. Here's a run of consecutive cards out of a rack of 2010 Update that I found interesting.

Ok, as much as I've bagged on them in the past year it is really cool that they picked the Lou Burdette switcheroo card for the Yo Momma set.

Nice little run of locals there if you don't count the Markakis. I see Attax cards like one of those puffy sweatshirt advertisement cards from the '80s so it's easy to pass right over it.

1972 Topps Wantlist

Goal for 2011: get wantlists up for every Topps base set from 1951 to 2007ish. I might bother to do the same for 2008-2011 assuming Topps doesn't piss me off too badly this year. Who am I kidding, they'll piss me off for sure. It's the 60th anniversary, you know they're going to gimmick that poor abused base set to death.

Protip for all you kiddos who love vintage sets but are scared to death of high numbers. Take your favorite Pre-1973 sets and focus on completing one of the low numbered series. 132 cards is much easier to pull off than five hundred something and you won't end up paying 10 bucks for a common. While I will never ever complete this set I'll bet dollars to donuts I can complete at least one series this year.

Hold off on the trading offers for the time being please, I've got a Target bag full of unmailed bubble mailers I need to deal with before I start up any new swaps.

Starting the year off right

Last night went like every other New Year's Eve for the past 5 years. Everyone's excited, I pop the champagne, My wife has one glass, and somehow between 10:00 and 11:00 everyone in the house but me falls dead asleep and 2 minutes before midnight I try to shake everyone awake to see the ball drop at Times Square and I end up failing utterly. This year I finally accepted that this is our family's New Year Tradition and just started polishing off the bottle of champagne myself and surfing the interwebs.

In my random bubbly induced clicking I came upon Scott Crawford's last pack of 2010. A fine pack indeed, what with the Brian McCann gold card. Scott included a link to a caption contest that was ending at midnight in the post. I had missed this contest earlier, but I'll take advantage of any chance to put words into the mouth of the Ol' Perfessor. I only had about 20 minutes to come up with something but thankfully I work best under pressure. I posted my caption 2 minutes before the deadline. Well lookie here, I won!

I am fairly proud of this last minute bit of silliness so I'll reprint it here. I'm gonna steal the image of the card too, cause that's how I roll.

C - ...so Mickey brought this dame right back to the locker room. Gorgeous broad... platinum blonde, blue eyes that stare right through yuz, the reddest lips youse ever saw, legs that just kept on goin, and a body... looked like two blimps crashing into the State Capitol building. Anyways, the dame was three sheets to the wind and shes only drinkin the good stuff y'know? French bubbly. Mickey neva passes up a drinking buddy so he wuz drinkin it wid' her. Drank two or tree bottles of the stuff and was burpin' up a storm. Sos they walk right inta the clubhouse making a racket, the broad's clothes were half off already. Yogi's eyes about popped right out of his head, scared poor Turley half to death. I hadta shoo 'em both into my office before Weiss found 'em out. So these two drunk bastids are flopping around my office trying to get ta foist base but they're so blotto that they're running ta third instead. Then alluva sudden Mick bolts upright, lets out a huge belch and races for the can like a bat outta hell. The bubbly went right through him and the burps was now comin' out the wrong side. So now this broad is completely sloshed and bent over my desk. I tells her "Hey! Ya dumb broad! Get outta here! you're messin up my lineup cards!" She turns around, looks at me and flips me tha boid! She sez "Make me, ya old goat!" and flops back down on the desk laughin. So I sees that big ol' rump wavin' up in th' air and reach out and PINCH! that dizzy dame right in the derrier! She yelps like a stuck pig and hot foots it out of the clubhouse right past ol' George!

D - Ha ha! That's funny, Casey!

C - ..and that's how I know yer wife.
