FLEA MARKET PILE OF JUNK WAX GARBAGE GOODIES

A MONTH OR SO BEFORE THE WORLD ENDED LAST YEAR THE CARD DUDE AT THE FLEA MARKET OFFERED ME A LARGE PILE OF JUNK WAX COMMONS AND GARBAGE FOR CHEAP. AS USUAL I DAWDLED AND DID NOT PULL THE TRIGGER BEFORE EVERYTHING GOT LOCKED DOWN AND ENDED UP REGRETTING IT BITTERLY ALL LAST SUMMER WHEN I WAS BORED AS SHIT AND COULD HAVE USED SOMETHING TO SORT. RECENTLY I RECTIFIED THIS ERROR AND PICKED UP THE FOLLOWING FOR TWENTY BUCKS PLUS THE CHANGE I SCROUNGED OUT OF THE SOFA WHEN I WAS CLEANING UP LAST SUMMER INSTEAD OF SORTING CARDS:

  • THREE 5000-COUNT MONSTER BOXES
  • ONE 3200-COUNT MINI MONSTER BOX WITH BONUS ART ☝
  • ONE 1600-COUNT SHOE BOX THAT IS BARELY IN ONE PIECE
  • SEVEN 800 COUNT BOXES
  • ONE 600-COUNT BOX FULL OF FOOTBALL CARDS
  • TWO SMALL PLASTIC STORAGE TUBS FULL OF FOOTBALL CARDS
  • THREE RANDOM BOXES FULL OF CARDS:
    • ONE LARGE PRIORITY MAIL FLAT RATE BOX
    • ONE NEW BALANCE SNEAKER SHOE BOX
    • ONE BOX THAT FORMERLY HELD A STARTER FOR A TOYOTA
  • AND FINALLY ONE NIKE BOX FULL OF BASKETBALL CARDS

I AM NOT GOING TO LIE. 80% OF IT IS FLAGSHIP COMMONS FROM 1987-1993 THAT I ALREADY HAD. AND ANOTHER 15% IS STUFF I DON'T HAVE WANTLISTS FOR LIKE LEAF, ULTRA, STADIUM CLUB, BOWMAN, PINNACLE, COLLECTOR'S CHOICE, ETC. THAT LAST 5% THOUGH WAS FUCKING AMAZING. ALL SORTS OF ODDBALL SHIT, RANDOM INSERTS, A SMALL PILE OF PACIFIC CARDS WHICH I AM NOW CONVINCED IS THE RAREST MAINSTREAM STUFF FROM THE 90S BY FAR, AND A LOT OF WEIRD FUN STUFF. PLUS I FOUND ENOUGH COMMONS OFF MY WANTLISTS TO COMPLETELLY FILL UP A 1600-COUNT BOX AND THEN SPILL OVER TO A SECOND BOX.  AND EVERY ONE OF THE BASKETBALL CARDS WERE CHERISHED AND APPRECIATED

FOR A MOMENT I THOUGHT ABOUT DOCUMENTING THE PROCESS OF GOING THROUGH ALL THIS MESS TO SHOW OFF ON HERE OR ON TWITTER BUT THE FIRST BOX I WENT THROUGH WAS ONE-HALF BRICKED 1993 UPPER DECK AND I GOT BORED WITH TAKING BAD PICTURES AND JUST WENT HAM ON SORTING ALL THE REST OF THE CRAP WHICH IS WHAT I DID ALL JULY INSTEAD OF POSTING ANYTHING ON HERE. I KNOW THIS IS DISAPPOINTING BUT I DID TAKE A FEW PICS AND HAD THE FORESIGHT TO PLAN ONE POST ON HERE WHICH IS WHY I'M TYPING RIGHT NOW

TWO OF THE 5000-COUNT BOXES DID NOT HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF CARDS. MOSTLY ALL BASE CARDS FROM THE SAME DOZEN OR SO SETS. THEY SEEMED TO ME TO BE LIKE A BUNCH OF MY DOUBLES BOXES WHERE I SORT THROUGH CARDS TRYING TO FINISH OFF SOME SETS AND THEN DUMP THE UNNEEDED CARDS INTO A BOX TO BE FORGOTTEN. ONE OF THEM WAS DIFFERENT, IT HAD ALL KINDS OF WACKY BULLSHIT IN IT. THIS ONE LOOKED LIKE THERE WERE A BUNCH OF RANDOM CARDS PILED ON A DESK, AND THEN SOME MORE OVER ON THE SHELF, AND THEN A BOX THAT HAD BEEN ACCIDENTALLY DUMPED ON THE FLOOR, AND THEN THE ROOM HAD TO BE CLEANED UP IN A HURRY SO THE WHOLE LOT OF IT WAS SHOVED INTO ONE MONSTER BOX. THERE WAS SOME NEAT STUFF IN THIS BOX AND ALSO SOME ACTUAL TRASH. WHILE SORTING OUT EVERYTHING I PUT ASIDE WHAT I CONSIDERED THE BEST AND WORST CARDS FROM EACH ROW AND HERE THEY ARE

ROW ONE - BEST CARD

1996 UPPER DECK HIDEO NOMO HOT COMMODITIES INSERT

A ONE PER BOX SUPER SHINY DIE CUT INSERT IN THE MIDST OF PILES OF JUNK IS LIKE FINDING A DIAMOND WHILE DIGGING IN THE SAND AT THE BEACH. EASILY THE BEST CARD IN THE BOXAND I THINK I DIDN'T ALREADY HAVE THIS ONEDESPITE OPENING LOTS ON 96 UPPER DECK BACK IN THE DAY

ROW ONE - WORST CARD

1991 UPPER DECK NOLAN RYAN BASEBALL HEROES INSERT DEVOURED BY FUNGUS

THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF THE NOMO CARD, EASILY THE WORST CARD IN THE BOX BY A MILE. THIS CARD GOT WET AND LEFT TO FESTER INTO A SCIENCE PROJECT. THANKFULLY THIS WAS NOT A  SITUATION WHERE THE BOX GOT WET AND A WHOLE SECTION OF CARDS WENT MOLDY, IT WAS JUST ONE HORRIBLE DISGUSTING CARD IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUNCH OF OTHER PERFECTLY FINE CARDS. IF MY SKLIN FALLS OFF AND I BECOME A ZOMBIE IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS YOU KNOW WHAT TO BLAME

ROW TWO - BEST CARD

2002 DONRUSS ORIGINALS TED WILLIAMS PUZZLE

EVERY CARD COMPANY DID THEIR OWN RETRO DESIGN REHASH PRODUCT AFTER TOPPS HERITAGE BLEW UP AND 2002 DONRUSS ORIGINALS WAS THE DONRUSS VERSION FEATURING A SET WITH THE 1982, 1984, 1986 AND 1988 DESIGN. THERE WAS NO 2003 VERSION WITH 1981, 1983, 1985 AND 1987 DESIGNS BECAUSE THE 2002 SET BOMBED HORRIBLY. TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, THEY CREATED THE FIRST PUZZLE SET IN A DECADE AND THEN MADE THEM AN INSERT CARD AT LIKE 1:8 PACKS OR SOME SUCH FOOLISHNESS. SINCE THE SET FLOPPED THESE ARE STUPID HARD TO FIND NOW, IT'S WAY EASIER TO STUMBLE ACROSS AUTOS OR RELICS. IT'S A SHAME BECAUSE THE COMPLETED PUZZLE LOOKS GREAT BUT GOOD LUCK COMPLETING THE THING

ROW TWO - WORST CARDS

1980 TOPPS MARKED CHECKLISTS STAPLED TOGETHER

THIS WAS A TOUGH CHOICE BECAUSE THERE WAS ALSO TWO-THIRDS OF A DONRUSS WILLIE STARGELL PUZZLE SET ALL STAINED BY RED KOOL-AID IN THE BOX. I CHOSE THIS INSTEAD BECAUSE WHILE A MARKED SET OF 1980 TOPPS CHECKLISTS ALL STAPLED TOGETHER IS A COOL ARTIFACT OF A BYGONE AGE, THE SAME THING WITH THE TOP CHECKLIST RIPPED OFF AND FLOATING AROUND SEPERATELY IN THE BOX IS KINDA TRAGIC

ROW THREE - BEST CARD

1998 COLLECTOR'S CHOICE CAL RIPKEN JR. CRASH THE GAME INSERT

A 90S INSERT OF A HALL OF FAMER IS ALWAYS WELCOME. I HAD QUITE A FEW WINNER CARDS FROM CRASH THE GAME CONTESTS ALTHOUGH I DON'T THINK I REDEEMED ANY THIS YEAR. CAL KNOCKED A HOMER AGAINST THE MARINERS ON SEPTEMBER 4TH SO THIS CARD WOULD HAVE WON. WHERE'S MY TIME MACHINE

ROW THREE - BESTEREST CARD

1999 FLEER TRADITION TURNER WARD

THIS ENTIRE ROW WAS FILLED WITH GOOD CARDS AND I COULD NOT FIND EVEN ONE THAT I CONCIDERED BAD. SO YOU GET A BONUS AWESOME CARD OF BUBBLE BOY TURNER WARD

ROW FOUR - BEST CARD

1994 SCORE BIP ROBERTS

I GOT A LOT OF BIPS OUT OF ALL THESE BOXES. VERY BAD WHEN OPENING A SEALED BOX YOU GOT AT TARGET, VERY GOOD WHEN SORTING THROUGH A PILE OF JUNK WAX. 1994 SCORE IS ALSO A BIG HOLE IN MY COLLECTION SO ANY AND ALL CARDS OF IT I CAN FIND ARE APPRECIATED

ROW FOUR - WORST CARDS

THIS ROW HAD A LOT OF TRASHED CARDS, I CHOSE THESE THREE AS A SAMPLE. THE GERALD PERRY DID NOT RECEIVE TYPICAL KIDS PLAYING WITH CARDS WEAR AND TEAR, THIS WAS ABUSE AND I'M WORRIED ABOUT THAT STAINBY HIS KNEE. THE SCAN DOES NOT DO JUSTICE TO THE DAMAGE ON BRIAN HOLMAN'S CARD. IT IS VERY SCUFFED WITH ODD SURFACE DAMAGE LIKE IT WAS RUN OVER BY A TRUCK AND THEN FELL IN A POOL OF SOLVENT. THE MIKE CAMERON CARD IS THE SADDEST, NOT ONLY IS THIS COOL PIC OF HIM ON A CELL PHONE RUINED BY THE MANGLING, BUT I NEED THE CARD FOR MY SET AS WELL. I MIGHT PUT IT IN THE SET ANYWAY

ROW FIVE - BEST CARD

1994 TOPPS FINEST RICK WHITE

THE LAST ROW HAD A LOT OF COOL STUFF IN IT BUT NO REAL STANDOUT PERFORMER SO I WENT WITH THE TOPPS FINEST CARD. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THIS FINEST SET BUT I HAVE A LOT OF NOSTALGIA FOR IT. I ONLY GOT FOUR FINEST CARDS IN THE WHOLE LOT, THESE THINGS WERE RARER THAN INSERTS

ROW FIVE - WORST CARD

1998 FLEER SPORTS ILLUSTRATED WORLD SERIES FEVER JEFF BAGWELL

NOT MUCH MORE DISAPPOINTING THAN FINDING A HALL OF FAME PLAYER FROM AN EXTREMELY OBSCURE SET YOU LIKE AND THE CARD IS ALL TRASHED TO HELL. NEW CARDS MAY BE SHINER AND MORE HIGH TECH BUT OLD CARDS KNEW HOW TO AGE GRACEFULLY

THIS WAS A VERY FUN LOT TO SORT THROUGH AND I STILL HAVE A LOT OF SORTING TO DO. I CAN PROBABLY START SECOND AND THIRD SETS FOR A LOT OF STUFF NOW IF I CHOSE TO. I HAVE NOT ACTUALLY UPDATED ANY OF THE WANT LISTS YET DUE TO BLOGGER DECIDING IT DOES NOT WANT TO STAY SIGNED IN ON CHROME FOR SOME REASON BUT AT THIS TIME I THINK THESE ARE THE BIG WINS AND LOSSES FOR ME SO FAR:

WINS:

  • FINALLY FOUND THE 1989 TOPPS CRAIG MCMURTRY THAT WAS MISSING FROM MY BINDER AND FOUND A SECOND ONE SO I CAN START A SECOND SET
  • GOT A GIGANTIC PILE OF 1993 SCORE AND PROBABLY INCREASED THE NUMBER OF CARDS I HAVE FROM THAT SET TENFOLD
  • ALL THE BASKETBALL CARDS. I LOVE THEM ALL

LOSSES:

  • STILL HAVE NOT FOUND THAT @%$^!! 1993 UPPER DECK CLEMENS CHECKLIST THAT I'M MISSING. ALSO I'VE MISPLACED THE ACTUAL SET AS WELL. HOW DO YOU LOSE ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE SETS
  • DESPITE GETTING ENOUGH 1992 DONRUSS TO FILL UP A TRUCK I'M PRETTY SURE I'M STILL MISSING A CARD, ALTHOUGH I STILL NEED TO VERIFY
  • SORTING THE FOOTBALL CARDS HAS GIVEN ME THE ITCH TO GO THROUGH MY MESS OF A COLLECTION AND MAYBE BUILD A COUPLE SETS LIKE 90 PRO SET OR SOME OF THE EARLY SCORE SETS, SOMETHING I ABSOLUTELY HAVE NO TIME FOR RIGHT NOW

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS TRIP THROUGH SOME JUNK, I'LL TRY TO POST MORE OFTEN THAN ONCE EVERY TWO MONTHS BUT NO PROMISES

GOTTA POST YOUR Ls TOO

I'M ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE HOUSE AGAIN NOW SO THIS IS MAYBE THE LAST PURCHASE FROM THE CANADIAN DIME BOX JOINT FOR A WHILE UNLESS I REALLY DECIDE TO FOCUS ON SOME SET BUILDING. I CAN VISIT REAL LIVE DIME BOXES IN PERSON NOW OR AT LEAST I'LL BE ABLE TO ONCE I GET OVER THE NASTY COLD I GOT WHEN I WENT OUTSIDE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 18 MONTHS. IT'S A SHAME TOO BECAUSE THE LAST PACKAGE I GOT WAS A LITTLE UNDERWHELMING FOR VARIOUS REASONS

ONE THING I DECIDED TO DO WAS PICK UP 5 OF THE RANDOM BASKETBALL DOLLAR PACKS TO APPROXIMATE OPENING ONE OF THE WALGREENS FIVE DOLLA JUNK BOXES. 75 CARDS FOR $5. YOU DON'T GET THE RANDOM PACK OF HOOPS OR THE 1:4 CHANCE AT A LAUNDRY SWATCH BUT WHAT THE HECK, THE FIRST PACK I GOT WAS FANTASTIC, WHY NOT TRY AGAIN. WORST CASE SCENARIO THE PACKS ARE ALL 100% JUNK WAX COMMONS AND I AT LEAST GET A LITTLE FUN OPENING UP SOME NEW STUFF. WELL, THE WORST CASE SCENARIO ACTUALLY HAPPENED BUT IT'S WORTH SHOWING OFF THE AFTERMATH. HERE'S THE RESULTS OF ALL FIVE PACKS SORTED BY PRODUCT

1990-91 FLEER - 4 CARDS

GOT: FRED ROBERTS, TY CORBIN, TRENT TUCKER, SIDNEY GREEN
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? NAH

I COMPLETED THIS SET IN A PREVIOUS ORDER SO TIME TO COMPLETE A SECOND SET??!?!??

1990-91 FLEER - 5 CARDS

.
GOT: ERIC LECKNER, DON CHENEY, DREAM, TY CORBIN, TRAVIS MAYS
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? NOPE

ANOTHER SET I COMPLETED A WHILE BACK. NO WORRIES, THE HAKEEM WAS MAYBE THE BIGGEST STAR IN THE BUNCH AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE OLD FLEER CARDS BEFORE THEY ALL TURNED GLOSSY

1994-95 - 5 CARDS

GOT: ANTHONY BOWIE, HORACE GRANT, TREE ROLLINS, BRIAN SHAW, BROOKS THOMPSON
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? UH UH

THIS ONE IS SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTING AS I STILL NEED A HANDFUL OF CARDS FROM THE SECOND SERIES OF THIS SET AND THESE WERE ALL FROM THAT SET AND I DIDN'T NEED NONE OF EM. ALSO THEY ARE ALL MAGIC CARDS WHICH MAKES IT LOOKS LIKE THE GUY WAS JUST PULLING CARDS FROM OLD SETS IN ORDER TO PUT TOGETHER THESE PACKS. TREE ROLLINS IS COOL THO

1997-98 FLEER - 5 CARDS

GOT: BRENT BARRY, GREG MINOR, DALE DAVIS, STEPH'S DAD, KENDALL GILL
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? YES! BARRY, MINOR AND DAVIS

YEAAAAAAH 97-98 FLEER IS A WONDERFUL SET. TRADING CARDS THAT FEEL LIKE PAPER AND NOT PLASTIC. GOT THREE I NEEDED FOR SETS WHICH MAKES ME VERY HAPPY

1992-93 FLEER ULTRA - 5 CARDS

GOT: KEVIN BROOKS, LAPHONSO ELLIS, SCOTT HASTINGS, ROBERT PACK, BRYANT STITH
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? NOT SURE, NO WANTLIST FOR ULTRA

WHILE I LIKE FLEER ULTRA I DO NOT LIKE IT ENOUGH TO BE BOTHERED WITH MAKING A WANTLIST FOR IT SO I HAVE NO IDEA IF I NEED THESE OR NOT. ONCE AGAIN ALL FIVE CARDS - ONE PER REPACK - ARE FROM THE SAME TEAM THIS TIME THE NUGGETS. TWO ROOKIE CARDS OF LAPHONSO AND BRYANT STITH AND SCOTTIE HASTINGS AINT BAD

1994-95 FLAIR - 4 CARDS

GOT: VLADE DIVAC, RONY SEIKALY, DOUG WEST, DAN MAJERLIE
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? PROBABLY

DON'T HAVE A LOT OF INTEREST IN FLAIR. THE FRONTS ARE TOO BUSY, THE BACKS ARE UNREADABLE AND THE BIG INITIAL SHIELD LOOKS DOOFY. THE PLAYER SELECTION IS DECENT AT LEAST

1989-90 HOOPS - 5 CARDS

GOT: RON ANDERSON, DEL HARRIS, REGGIE WILLIAMS, DICK VERSACE, JAY HUMPHRIES
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? SADLY, NO

HOOPS! THE BEST HOOPS SET.  DIDN'T NEED ANY OF THESE AND GOT TWO COACHES. I AM DISSAPOINT

1990-91 HOOPS - 5 CARDS

GOT: ALEXANDER VOLKOV, JOHN MORTON, CHRIS MULLIN, SHERMAN DOUGLAS, DANA BARROS
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM?  NO

ANOTHER O-FER. AT LEAST THIS TIME THERE ARE FOUR ROOKIES AND A STAR BUT NO MURDERERS OR JORDAN CAMEOS

1993-94 HOOPS SCOOPS - 1 CARD

GOT: TIM HARDAWAY
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM?  I THINK SO?

THE ONLY INSERT CARD IN FIVE PACKS. THERE WERE THREE IN THE FIRST ONE SO IT ALL EVENS OUT I GUESS. I APPRECIATE THE EFFORT ON THE INNOVATIVE PHOTO ANGLE BUT THESE OVER THE BASKET SHOTS ALWAYS LOOK DOOFY TO ME

1990-91 SKYBOX - 5 CARDS

GOT: MAURICE CHEEKS, STUART GRAY, CHARLOTTE HORNETS, CLEVELAND CAVALIERS, DALLAS MAVERICKS
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? YES! NEEDED THE CAVS CHECKLIST

YEEEEEEEESSSSSS. I LOVE THIS SET SO MUCH AND I DIDN'T BUY ENOUGH OF SERIES TWO BACK IN THE DAY AND IT'S WAY TOO LATE FOR ME TO GET A BOX OF THE STUFF BECAUSE IT PROBABLY COSTS 4 FIGURES NOW. I ESPECIALLY LOVE THE LOGO CARDS AND I GOT THREE OF THEM PLUS A HALL OF FAMER. BIG WIN

1992-93 SKYBOX - 1 CARD

GOT: DETROIT PISTONS/ISIAH THOMAS
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? NOPE

SKYBOX DIALED WAY BACK ON THE CHEEZY COMPUTER GRAPHICS BY THIS TIME BUT THEY WERE STILL PRETTY COOL. I ALREADY HAVE THIS CARD BUT AT LEAST IT'S A GOOD PLAYER

1994 SKYBOX USA BASKETBALL- 1 CARD

GOT: INTERNATIONAL RULES
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? UUUUHHHH

B A S K E T B A L L   W O R L D

I DID NOT PAY MUCH ATTENTION TO THE TEAM USA SETS BACK IN THE DAY BUT HAVE ACCIDTNALLY ACCUMULATED A BUNCH OF THEM ANYWAY. I MIRACULOUSLY AVOIDED GETTING A HALL OF FAMER AND INSTEAD GOT A LOOMING BOUNCY EARTH

1992-93 TOPPS - 5 CARDS

GOT: KENNY GATTISON, PETE CHILCUTT, JOE KLEINE, SIDNEY GREEN, BRIAN WILLIAMS
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? NAH

ANOTHER SET I THINK I RECENTLY COMPLETED SO MOARER DOUBLES. THE BRIAN WILLIAMS CARD FEATURING HIS EPIC BATTLE WITH MANUTE BOL IS FANTASTIC

1996-97 TOPPS - 5 CARDS

GOT: TYUS EDNEY, ISAIAH RIDER, ARMON GILLIAM, POPEYE JONES, GREG ANTHONY
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM?  YES! EVERYONE BUT ISAIAH

1996-97 TOPPS AKA THE KOBE SET. THIS IS ANOTHER ONE I NEED A TON OF FROM SERIES 2 AND I GOT FOUR OF EM! WISH MY SUCCESS RATE WAS HALF THIS GOOD WITH THE REST OF THE CARDS

1991-92 UPPER DECK - 5 CARDS

GOT: DANNY MANNING, ALVIN ROBERTSON, KEVIN WILLIS, JERROD MUSTAF, CHARLES JONES
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? NUH UH

THIS SET IS WEIRD BECAUSE I'VE BOUGHT A TON, I STILL NEED A TON AND YET I ALREADY HAVE ALL THESE. VERY FEW HAWKS IN THESE PACKS SO KEVIN WILLIS IS APPRECIATED

1993-94 UPPER DECK- 4 CARDS

GOT: KEN WILLIAMS, DARNELL MEE, GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS, PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? NO RACKINFRACKIT

I BARELY HAVE ANY 93-94 UD SERIES 2 AND I GOT ALL THESE #$%#* %!#@%!!!

1994-95 COLLECTOR'S CHOICE SILVER PARALLEL - 5 CARDS

GOT: DANNY MANNING, MARK PRICE, REGGIE MILLER, NICK VAN EXEL, VIN BAKER
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM? SURE, I GUESS?

PARALLEL CARDS! JUST WHAT EVERY SET COLLECTOR WANTS. THESE ARE ALL GOOD PLAYERS EVEN THOUGH DANNY MANNING CAN GO JUMP IN A LAKE

2019-20 DONRUSS - 5 CARDS

GOT: DONOVAN MITCHELL, RICKY RUBIO, BRADLEY BEAL, TROY BROWN JR., THOMAS BRYANT
DID I NEED ANY OF THEM?  YES! EVERY ONE!

I HAVE NOT GOTTEN ANY NEW BASKETBALL CARDS IN OVER 18 MONTHS SO ANY AND ALL RECENT CARDS ARE GLADLY WELCOME. TWO LEGIT STARS TOO! MOAR NEW DONRUSS PLEASE

SO OUT OF FIVE REPACKS I GOT ABOUT ONE PACK WORTH OF CARDS I NEEDED FOR SETS AND A HANDFUL OF STARS. NOT GREAT, BUT IF WE'RE BEING HONEST NOT MUCH WORSE THAN WHAT YOU'D FIND IN A FAIRFIELD BOX. PLUS I WANTED TO OPEN SOME 'PACKS' AND I DID AND I HAD SOME FUN. SPENDING MY NEXT FIVE BUX ON SOMETHING GOOD THOUGH

BLACK FRIDAY COMC PICKUPS - PART 8: EINSTEIN?

IT'S RARE YOU FIND THE PERFECT CARD BUT SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TIMES

1967 TOPPS WHO AM I? - ALBERT EINSTEIN

TOPPS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ENAMOURED WITH WEIRD GIMMICKS. ONE OF THEIR FIRST TRADING CARD SETS REQUIRED YOU TO WET THE FRONT OF THE CARD WITH THE WRAPPER AND 'DEVELOP' THE PICTURE BY PUTTING IT IN SUNLIGHT. THERE'S BEEN STICKERS, STAMPS, FOLD-INS, POSTERS, PUZZLES, COMICS, DIE CUTS, COINS, AND ALL MANNER OF OTHER GIMMICKS INCLUDING SCRATCH OFF PRINTING. NOWADAYS SCRATCH-OFF MEANS LOTTERY TICKETS OR MAYBE REVEALING AN AMAZON GIFT CARD CODE. BACK IN THE DAY TOPPS USED THE TECHNOLOGY ON THE 1970-71 SCRATCH-OFF GAME SETS, ON INSTANT WIN CARDS IN THE 80S AND 90S AND EVEN USED THE GIMMICK IN THE 1980-81 TOPPS HOCKEY SET TO MAKE STOOPID AMERICANS GUESS THE NAME OF THE PLAYERS ON THE CARDS. ONE OF THE FIRST TIMES IT WAS USED ON A TRADING CARD SET WAS IN THE 1967 WHO AM I? SET WHERE A PICTURE OF A HISTORICAL FIGURE WAS OBSCURED WITH A SCRATCH-OFFABLE TRIVIA QUESTION AND RIDICULOUS DISGUISE. THE KID COULD EITHER SCRATCH OFF ALL THE SILVER STUFF TO SEE THE CARD NAME AND IMAGE OR THEY COULD LEAVE IT PRISTINE AND HIDE IT AWAY IN A BOX FOR 50 YEARS AND GET IT GRADED BY PSA AND MAKE A LOTTA MONEY. OCCASIONALLY THE KID WOULD HALF-ASS IT AND LEAVE A BUNCH OF THE SCRATCHY GOOP STILL ON THE CARD. THANK GOD FOR LAZY KIDS

I FIRST HEARD ABOUT THIS SET FROM A BLOG POST ON BEN HENRY'S BASEBALL CARD BLOG A BILLION YEARS AGO AND IMMEDIATELY WANTED ONE. I CANNOT FIND THE ORIGINAL POST BUT HE DID ANOTHER WHO AM I? POST IN 2016 THAT IS FANTASTIC. UNFORTUNATELY I GOT THE WHO AM I? SET MIXED UP WITH THE 1952 LOOK 'N SEE SET SOMEHOW WHICH HAD IT'S OWN RED CELLOPHANE HIDDEN IMAGE GIMMICK AND NO SCRATCH OFF AT ALL. AFTER COLLECTING A FEW OF THESE CARDS AND WONDERING WHY I'D NEVER SEEN ONE OF THE 52S WITH THE SCRATCH OFF STUFF INTACT I FINALLY FIGURED OUT I WAS A DOPE. I DIDN'T HAVE ONE OF THESE CARDS AT ALL! I SCROUNGED ALL MY USUAL VINTAGE NON-SPORTS DEALERS (ALL TWO OF THEM) AND FOUND NONE, SCRATCHED OR UNSCRATCHED. THEN LAST BLACK FRIDAY I REMEMBERED THE SET AND CHECKED COMC TO SEE IF ANYTHING WAS IN MY PRICE RANGE. THANK GOODNESS NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT VINTAGE NON-SPORTS! THERE WERE PLENTY OF CRUMMY CARDS AVAILABLE FOR CHEAP! THE BEST OF THE LOT WAS THIS ONE. ALBERT EINSTEIN IS AN S-TIER NON-SPORTS SUBJECT NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT. HE'S BECOME AN ICON OF POP CULTURE LIKE THE STATUE OF LIBERTY OR THE MONA LISA. EVEN BABIES KNOW E=MC SQUARED. A MINT UNSCRATCHED COPY WOULD PROBABLY COST MORE THAN MY ENTIRE ORDER BUT THIS SLOPPILY SCRITCHED MESS WAS NOT ONLY IN MY BUDGET BUT I CAN STILL SEE MOST OF AL'S WEIRD SCRATCH-OFF HIPPIE DISGUISE. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!

AGAIN I WILL SAY, THANK GOD FOR ROTTEN LITTLE KIDS WHO DIDN'T TAKE CARE OF THEIR CARDS
