TOPPS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Once again, Topps has decided that gimmicky bullshit is more important than the integrity of the base set that made them what they are today. I'd say more, but I've already done this rant.

I really shouldn't be surprised, they don't want people like me as a customer anymore anyway.

You asked for it

You got it.

The Hank Aaron Puzzle is assembled, slightly trimmed and framed. The scan is awful because only a complete moron scans a picture frame. I haven't quite figured out where to put it, but when I do I'll take a pic.

Call it the Strasmogrifier

The Topps Yo Momma Code Transmogifier is suffering from mission creep.

Tonight, after Stephen Strasburg's first pitch for the Nats, Topps will be giving away rookie cards of the overhyped phenomenon on toppscards.com. Some poor schlub will enter in a code hoping for a 1987 Wade Boggs and end up with some card from this year. The card will feature the first pitch from Strasburg, which means I have yet another reason to wish for a Dravecky moment for ol' Can't Possibly Miss.

I guess Topps is just taking advantage of two successful moneymakers and combining them into one ("You got Strasburg in my Transmogrifier!" "You got Transmogrifier in my Strasburg!!") ginormous hype machine but I haven't decided whether I'll be burning one of my codes tonight or not. It's obvious that the card redemptions aren't random what with the three straight weeks of mid 70's stuff in the recently unlocked cards section and I'm pretty certain they will be getting rid of a bunch of mid-aughts commons tonight as everyone madly enters codes hoping to win the lottery.

I got two codes and I've grown bored with the site since no one wants to trade me the cards I want and everyone  wants my '87 George Brett and '81 Alan Trammell for some reason. I might burn one for the lulz. Woulda been nice for them to get some series two retail packs out in time to stock up on some codes but timeliness is not a Topps trademark.

A little Draft Day Ditty

Bryce Harper don't wanna get drafted

He don't wanna go...

Scott Boras wants him in the free market...

Oh no no

(feeling a bit odd this week, folks. bear with me)

The Kid Who Could - Page 2

After a one page setup we jump straight into the plot. There's also a surprise on this page!

Peter hotfoots it over to a remarkably diverse collection of children. there's even a girl playing baseball! Imagine that! Kellogg's is apparently a really progressive company, or at least was back in the early '90s. In panel two we meet Peter's co-star, Andrew. I'm eventually going to get around to all the hideous clothes these urchins are wearing, but once again I feel it necessary to harp on a haircut.

Is there not a single barber in this town? Half these kids have a bowl cut and Andrew here is sporting a particularly egregious Moe haircut. With all the diversity going on I originally thought Andrew was the token Asian character, but the colorer but a stop to that by slapping blue eyes on the kid. Don't worry, there's a girl with a black ponytail on page 7 so this comic was able to get their diversity certificate.

Once the writers have established the main characters they pounce on the conflict. No J Michael Straczinski style dialogue where the heroes talk things over for several issues, this is a one off that needs to be wrapped up in 16 pages. "Can I play?" No, you're too little" WHAM - CONFLICT. Right there on page two, panel four and we're off. The panel is a little squicky to me though, the layout looks like a scene from a coming of age gay porno on Lifetime. Comic artists are notorious preverts like (don't click on these links, they're disgusting and NSFW) Bill Ward, Wally Wood and Rob Liefeld, so I'm pretty darn sure this was intentional.

Even worse is Juan's showing up to play literally seconds after Andrew dismisses Peter because he's too short. "But Juan always plays with us..." Then why didn't you say that instead of  "Sorry kid, we need a player but Juan always takes his time getting here. Tell ya what, we'll wait a few minutes if he doesn't show up you can play. Oh wait, there he is now!" Ah, but if Andrew didn't expose his sizeist bigotry Tony the Tiger wouldn't have shown up. No, that's not the surprise I promised you. Tony's on the cover, that's no surprise. The surprise is Juan:

To make the baseball scenes as realistic as possible, DC hired a few up and coming major leaguers to appear in the comic. Have you guessed who's playing the fashionably late Juan yet?

That's right, Sammy Sosa. Why wound a Cubs legend allow himself to be seen in a comic featuring Cardinal Ozzie Smith? Remember, he did this back before he was traded to the Cubs. He's not proud of it, but he was young and needed the money. Good thing he put on glasses to fool everyone.

Andy hits the Big Time

Remember Andy from the 88 Topps Blog? He just got an article published in the New York Times. He also does some nice work on the Baseball-Reference.com blog. It's a treasure trove of nifty statistic tidbits, but don't worry if you're not a stathead, Andy has snuck a few baseball cards in there too. It's a nice way to kill a lazy Saturday, especially since I won't be posting again till late to night at the earliest, so check it out.

The Kid Who Could - Page 1

All righty then, we've passed the lawyer approved warning to never ever go out and play lest Kellogg's be liable for any injuries suffered trying to play baseball like an anthropomorphic tiger. Time for some comics. We set the scene in an average kitchen in suburbia. Breakfast is served, complete with delicious Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. What, did you expect waffles? This Week In Baseball plays an Ozzie Smith highlight on an absolutely ancient television set. How about that! And two disturbingly freaky children are there to enjoy the repast.

Ok, what the hell is going on with that kid's hair. Not the blonde kid, he's the hero and thus designed to be a Macaulay Culkin clone. Although in panel two, he looks less like Home Alone and more like a Hitler youth from Triumph of the Will. It took all my willpower to not MSPaint a little blonde toothbrush mustache and a pink, purple and teal exxxxtreeeeme swastika on the kid. No, I'm talking about frogboy.

What in the world is that mop on his head? When has Davy Crockett coonskin cap hair ever been an acceptable fashion statement? If the kid was a little less dorky and a little more rednecky I would say that is an example of  the rare reverse mullet. Party on top, business in the back. Although that's more like an orgy than a party.

I think I got the hairstyle figured out after some serious thought on the matter. I was wondering why these two kids were eating breakfast together. They are either friends or brothers. They sure can't be brothers unless the milkman has cokebottle glasses and a mop of orange hair. If they are friends, then why is Macaulay rushing off to play baseball leaving his dorky friend in the house? Then it struck me - that kid is the dictionary definition of red-headed stepchild. While the blonde aryan son gets proper fuhrer haircuts from the hair stylist, Frogboy McGinger gets the bowl cut. The bowl has apparently gotten bigger and bigger over the years.

This page sets up the plot quite nicely. Baseball fan sees kids about to play baseball and rushes out to try to get into the game. Dorky stepbrother warns the baseball fan that he'll never get picked because children are cruel hateful monsters who only wish to crush your dreams. Plucky hero rushes out anyway to almost certain disappointment. Actually frogboy might actually be the hero in this tale. After all, he's the one who knows not to try any new exercises without proper adult supervision. No, a talking tiger is not proper adult supervision.

The Kid Who Could - Inside cover

I worked it out, and if I post one page every weekday I'll finish this puppy up by June 29th, which leaves one last day in the month for a tearful goodbye as DC Comics, Sports Illustrated and Kellogg's lawyers shut down the blog and run me into bankrupcy for violating their intellectual property by making fun of crappily scanned images of a piece of throwaway ephemera that they all made their money on almost 20 years ago. June is now officially the month of The Kid Who Could, and not of idiot umpires making ludicrous calls to ensure that the game is all about them and not the players' achievements while the rest of his umpiring crew and a neutered, useless commissioner look on impotently as it happens. Not even a zombie Eric Gregg tackling Albert Pujols and devouring his brains as he rounds third after hitting his 5th home run of a game can spoil this majesty of Tony the Tiger playing ball with the Wizard of Oz now.

I know you're all psyched for cartoon Ozzie Smith, but we have to do this the right way and show off the inside cover first. Inside covers are usually pretty lame in comics, and this one is no different. Here we have an introduction to the comic written by some intern and cynically attributed to Ozzie Smith. Here's the text for all you people too lazy to click the image so you can read it:

Dear Sports  Fan:
I hope you enjoy this issue of Tony's Sports Comics.™
"The Kid Who Could" is the story of how Tony the Tiger and I helped a couple of boys, Peter and Andrew, discover that good kings come in small packages. Peter shows Andrew that you don't have to be a big, home run hitter to be a good ballplayer. You can also win games with good fielding, good baserunning, good hitting, and good sense.
WHY DID NO ONE GIVE A COPY OF THIS COMIC TO BUD SELIG IN 1992???!!?!

Oh how this comic could have changed the world. I can hear the conversation that could should have occurred in 1996 in my head right now...

"Hey everybody! No more stadiums the size of little league fields! No more tightening the baseballs to make them go farther! No more turning a blind eye to steroids! We're going back to basics!"
"But Mr. Selig! We need to bring back fans after the strike! We need to encourage a lot of home runs and artificially inflated offense to make the game more exciting!"
"NO!!! Peter and Andrew and Tony the Tiger have taught me that you don't need to hit home runs to be a good ballplayer! A game with good pitching, fielding baserunning and fundamental baseball skills is better than a 15-12 slugfest! How could I have been so blind?!? QUICK! Tear down Coors Field! Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa - Banned for Life! Bring back the mushball they used to use in the deadball era! NOTHING BUT FUNDAMENTAL BASEBALL FROM NOW ON!!!"
"Sir, Yes Sir!"
"And bring me some Kellogg's Frosted Flakes as part of this balanced breakfast! The Commissioner is hungry!"

That could have been our world, had only Bud not been such a big oatmeal fan.

The key to the entire page, if not the entire comic, is this disclaimer added to the bottom of the page:

To our readers: Remember, you should not try any new sports activities or exercises without the advice and supervision of a coach or physical education teacher.
That's right kids! Trying new things is scary! Never go outside and play without strict supervision from someone with a Master's degree in physical education. Sorry all the coaches at your school got laid off because of budget cuts after they built that new stadium. Until the tax increase is passed and they can hire one of 'em back, stay inside and have a big bowl of Frosted Flakes while reading a DC comic!

2010 Topps Series 2 pack - Dustin Pedroia

When I first saw the box for Topps Series two, by first reaction was: Pedroia?? I guess it was a reward for doing a very funny video game commercial. I'm not gonna lie, this was by far the best of the packs.

441 Clete Thomas

Ball on Bat action!

604 Braves Franchise

Awwwww yeah! Chippah and Henny Youngman hoisting the 2004 Division Banner. We'll have to get us a new one of those this year. The back is kinda cool:

Chipper and Huddy are dominating the categories for active Braves right now. Looking at the all-time leaders, I don't think any of those are changing for a loooong time.

CMT63 1956 Ernie Banks Yo Momma Card

Yo Momma! I relish every single one of these that bless my packs. 1956 ismy second favorite set from the '50s too. I don't even mind getting a Cub, because Ernie transcends all Cubbieness as The Perfect Cub. What I really want to know is where the hell is Hank Aaron in this set. Topps had an entire year dedicated to Hank in 2000, and nothing this year. They're gonna make money hand over fist thanks to Straburg Mania, they can damn well pony up the license fees to get a '56 Yo Momma of Hammer in the Update set.

LL-53 Nolan Ryan/Justin Verlander Legendary Lineage

I'm not a huge fan of this set, but damn this is a cool looking card with Express and Verlander going for the gold in synchronized pitching.

Jake Peavy Silk # 19/50

Hey I only got 8 cards in this pack! Rip off!!! Ah yes, the silky card. Of a player that would have been a Brave if he hadn't vetoed the trade. Can you believe this is my first silk? I haven't had much luck pulling these before now and I didn't feel like paying out the big bucks just to caress the fabric. It just goes to show that if you buy enough packs, you'll pull one of everything sooner or later.

458 Todd Wellemeyer

PITCHIING ARE SERIOUS BIZNISS

507 Francisco Rodriguez

K-Rod got 62 saves in 2008. Then the Mets threw a lot of money at him. Do you think K-Rod will get 62 saves in his first two years with the Mets? He needs 17 more this year to pull it off.

Max Scherzer TAttaxTown

Matt got Dontrelle Willis kicked out of Detroit and posted 14 Ks in a game while doing it. It's sort of weird how Dontrelle and Max traded 2009 teams.

Allrighty, that was the bet of the bunch by far. Once I get my act together I'll post the Mick.

The Kid Who Could

Something a little different today...

This is one of the weirder things in the collection. I picked this up at a favorite bookshop of mine, Rowan's, shortly before they went out of business in 2008. I was going to post it back then but I was too depressed about my bookstore going away and there were actually new products coming out all the time to keep the blog busy. I'm over it, and the card aisle at Wal-Mart is a vast wasteland so why not now.

This is a joint production of DC comics, Sports Illustrated and Frosted Flakes, with Ozzie Smith tagging along for good measure. I am assuming this was given away in a box of cereal, but I wasn't really into Frosted Flakes in 1992. Major League Baseball approved what ever promotion this was associated with, so it's all good.

The cover is sort of deceiving, there is no superhero Ozzie flying through the air to nab laser grounders while Tony the Tiger and some kid run out on the field behind him and get chased by a fat security dude with a taser. There is a whole lot of early '90s gaudy clothes, baseball tips from Ozzie, lessons learned and really really bad hair. I'm thinking about showing off the whole comic a page at a time over the next month with appropriate commentary for each page. If you think this is a Very Bad Idea now's the time to tell me. Otherwise you'll get an eyeful of Ozzie this June.

A few more packs of Panini world Cup

I still can't find any of these in retail stores (Toy Story 3? that I can find) but Atlanta Sports Cards has some packs and singles for sale. I got four packs for 6 bucks and overpaid but what the hell. After I walked out of the building I realized that they were selling 20 loose stickers for 3 bucks which is cheaper than the 8 for a buck and a half with the packs. I went on my lunch break and had no time for shuffling through stuff so it's all good. Here's the results:

Pack 1

576 Cesc Fabregas ESP
533 Kanga Akale CIV
490 Juan BRA
8 Half a stadium
289 Mark Bresciano AUS
470 Martin Skrtel SVK
481 Jan Novak SVK
218 Landon Donovan USA

This one is going on A Pack To Be Named Later tonight so you can read about it over there.

Pack 2:

27 Friggin double
315 Ghana Team
504 Adriano BRA
508 Ri Jun-Il PRK
34 Tsepo Masilela RSA
533 Kanga Akale CIV
536 Guy Demel CIV
466 Rory Fallon NZL

My first two doubles, ugh. One was from the previous pack!! I'm going to put up a trading post once I can be arsed to spend the time to do it. All you guys who commented on the last post, keep watching this spot. I'd like to trade some, but I need to accumulate a few damn stickers first. Why isn't Panini selling blasters of this stuff??

Pack 3:

17 Half a different stadium
100 Franck Ribery FRA
102 Nicolas Analka FRA
93 Bacary Sagna FRA
381 Yuki Abe JPN
324 Stephan Appiah GHA
412 Gianluigi Buffon ITA
187 Glen Johnson ENG

This was the Frenchy hot pack. France's stickers have a weird background on them. that is the only team were I see anything like that going on. Several teams look like their pics come from a police lineup.

Pack 4:

377 Marcus Tulio Tanaka JPN
522 Jong Tae-Se PRK
144 Korea Republic Team
15 Half of yet another stadium
543 Portugal Team
334 Nederland Team
410 Italia Team
617 David Suazo HON

Four team stickers in this one including ITALIA!!! While I haven't officially decided who I am going to root for in this year's cup, out of all the teams there is only one where I have to yell the name of the squad whenever I see it. ITALIA!!!! I'm a quarter Italian with possible Mafia ancestry so I don't wanna hear about what the Sons of Liberty or whatever the hell they are called are going to do to me for being a traitor. Right now at this moment I may very well have a 99 year old angry Dago with a Tommy gun looking to whack me to avenge some mob slight from the '30s so you US footie fans can do your worst. I'm also a sixteenth Cherokee so my people were here first and don't you forget it.

One Card Review -2010 Topps Finest

Yes, it is completely unfair to judge a set on the based on a single card. Ya know what? Life's unfair. Here's 2010 Topps Finest boiled down to one card. But first, a quiz:

Andruw Jones, 51 homers. That would be answer C. Duh. Oh, you wanted to try to guess? Sorry. That one was just too easy. Here's the card:

Brian McCann. BMac was the first Finest card I got my grubby mitts on for the past three years. He ends up in the 50 cent boxes for some reason. I'm going to come right out and say it. I love Finest. I've loved it since it first came out in 1993. I like the high-end stock, I like the whiggetywhack designs, I like the bright gaudy colors. Finest it the set where the Topps designers are free to imbibe in all sorts of mind-altering chemicals watch some cult movies and just go nuts. It's so utterly tacky it works. So, look at that card. What do you see? I see Grey. Gunmetal Gray as far as the eye can see.

The whole reason I like this set is for its oddball creative designs. It sure ain't for the price. It sure ain't for the chromium stock, Topps and Bowman Chrome sort of annoy me but it works on Finest for some reason. I like that unexplainable condition of being shiny, not just in its reflectivity of light property but all those other things that go along with it to make a baseball card shiny.. This card is not shiny at all.

The only color on the entire front of this card other than the player's uniform and the team logo is a tiny orange finest logo. Everything else is black, white and grey. And ooooh the grey. So much grey. When I first saw this design on a sell sheet I liked it. I'm a fan of big gaudy team logos floating in space for no reason and this had that in spades. Little did I know that it was jut the etched outline of the logo with no color. What the hell? I suppose I should be thankful for the etching, Topps has gotten really tight with that too lately. Etching must be really expensive because in a set that used to have etched patterns all over the place, we have the logo and an oval and a semicircle. And that's it. At least it hasn't been banished from the design completely like in Bowman. I just have to come out and say it, this card is boring.

Finest should not be boring. Finest should be bright and tacky and insane and redonkulous and utterly absurd.  Finest is the big flaming drag queen of trading card sets, the set that brought us all into The Age of High End dancing and singing with a shiny colorful lightshow that rivals Disney's Electrical Parade. This is the equivalent of that drag queen wearing a sensible little black dress. Drag queens should not be wearing little black dresses, they should be wearing gigantic flowing sequined gowns in clashing neon colors with a big hat with peacock feathers all over it and a fur coat made of LIVE chinchillas so as not to be cruel to the little beasties. All the time singing showtunes to a techno beat while dancing like a Rockette. As you can see, I have very particular tastes in drag queens and I am the same way with Finest. Finest should be SHINY, dammit, and this card is boring. Topps made Finest boring. Maybe the refractors look good. I don't know. I haven't seen one.

Here's the back. It looks like the back of a Donruss/Panini football release. A whole lot of design, very little information. There's not even a season line for stats. Oh well, let's check the answer of the quiz.

Answer D. Eddie Mathews, 51 homers.

Goddamit Topps. If you're not going to put anything into making the design interesting, at least pay someone to fact check.

2010 Topps Series 2 pack - Ty Cobb

Just about everyone wanted to see the Ty Cobb pack next. Congratulations! you picked the most utterly boring pack! This one was bound to suck, I chose between the last two Cobb packs in the open box and chose poorly.

332 Brad Hawpe

I have an irrational fear that I'm going to see an eBay auction soon where the dude with the orange hat under Brad's left arm has been replaced with John Elway. Topps has utterly destroyed my piece of mind.

459 Joel Zumaya

ARMS AND LEGS EVERYWHERE.

575 Ryan Perry

He's been in the league one dang season and his arm is already all inked up. Save a little skin for later, rook!

638 Paul Konerko

Sorry, I'm not scanning the boring cards. Think of how a Paul Konerko Topps card should look and I promise you it will be more interesting than this.

384 Chris Johnson RC

He's making a goofy face bit it's still not good enough to scan.

641 Chase Headley LaMarr

Gold cards bore me. Plus, I really wish the Padres would go back to the neon brown uniforms they used to have.

PP-96 Dan Haren Peak Performance

I hate this endless, useless insert set. When it's a crummy current player that just makes it worse.

445 Miguel Olivo

This one I like. Miguel looks like he's shooting a hook shot for the Nuggets.

349 Felix Pie

How's about a piece of pie, DING DONG DING DONG
Sorry, unexpected Ween moment there. Let's move on.

Alexi Ramirez TAttaxTown

I really hate these. Ugh, one set per pack please.

So that pack sucked. They can't all be good. Up later this week is the Pedroia for the Sox fans out there. That pack only has eight cards in it though. Oops, sorry, spoiler alert.
