Funny thing about the Joshua Tree...

Stole Night Owl's picture, too |
In 1987 I got the Joshua Tree and an Elton John greatest hits cassette tape from an aunt for my birthday. I wanted nothing to do with either so I went to the mall to return them. As luck would have it, there was a card show going on that weekend. So I took the $25 I got from returning the tapes and shopped for cards.
One guy offered me one card I liked for $25 but I turned it down because I wanted to check out the rest of the show. I eventually got a bunch of stuff including some vintage grab bags. One of the grab bags was full of Dodgers and included a couple dozen Topps Venezuela cards from the '60s. Sounds like a good deal right? U2 and Elton for rare vintage Dodgers? Nope.
The card I passed on?
The 1953 Topps Jackie Robinson that still haunts my dreams.

I 1986 I passed on a Fleer basketball set for $10. That being the one with the MJ rookie and just about every other significant rookie card from my favorite era of the NBA. I don't even remember what I did with that $10.
You returned one of the greatest albums of all time? (Whoa whoa Elton...I didn't say your name.)
Jeff: In 1987 I was listening to AC/DC*, the Beastie Boys and 2 Live Crew. I had no use for that mamby pamby pop music.
(I ended up buying U2's entire discography in college on CD)
*Bon Scott! not that interloper**
**pretty much trolling for angry comments now
When you see pony-related posts on Night Owl Cards, you'll know I'm paying you back.
The way I look at it, Elton John and/or Bono owe you a GD '53 Jackie Robinson card...
Ouch. Great story though.
I traded my 1984 Fleer traded set for some cards of Mike Schmidt and Reggie Jackson back in 1985. A couple of months later that set was selling for $100 but now that I see the big rookie cards were Clemens, Puckett and veteran was Rose it does not feel so bad
BRIAN JOHNSON IS NOT AN INTERLOPER, WHATEVER THAT MEANS!!!
Just kidding. BON SCOTT FOREVER!
If you still like Bon Scott, you should check out the band '77...sounds just like Bon Scott-era AC/DC.

Elton John & U2 are awesome, but you can find these cassettes for $1 or less at the flea market any day of the week. Can't say the same for Topps Venezuelan cards from the 60's. I think you did pretty well.
As for the Jackie... we've all passed on great deals. In the end you still came out ahead.
I would have traded in the U2 as well. I've never liked them. I occasionally liked some of their songs but after 25/30 years I've gotten sick of all their songs I quickly change the dial when I hear a U2 song on the radio.
25 years ago I was still listening to many of my cassette tapes and I have the Elton John Greatest Hits (and/or GH 2 as well) might even still have it on CD if I ever got it on CD, can't recall.
