BLACK FRIDAY COMC PICKUPS - PART 6: DRACCA

MONSTER CARDS. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. HERE'S A PARTICULARLY GRISLY ONE IN BOTH SUBJECT MATTER AND CONDITION.

1961 NU-CARDS HORROR MONSTER GREEN SERIES - HORROR OF DRACULA

YOU KNOW HOW I'M A BIG FAN OF DRACULA. I STAN THE BITEY BOI. I DON'T HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF REALLY VINTAGE MONSTER CARDS IN MY COLLECTION SO I WAS HUNTING FOR SOME GOOD CHEAP ONES. THIS ONE WAS GOOD - A CARD OF HAMMER'S HORROR OF DRACULA! AND IT WAS CHEAP - CHECK OUT THAT WALLET CARD CONDITION! BUT I WAS CONFUSED. THAT SURE AIN'T CHRISTOPHER LEE THERE IN THAT COFFIN. BUT THE PHOTO LOOKED REALLY FAMILIAR SO I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE SOME OFF-BRAND DRACULA AND EVEN WATCHED THE FILM THE VAMPIRE'S COFFIN BECAUSE THE LEAD VAMPIRE FROM THAT FILM LOOKS A LITTLE LIKE THIS GUY, BUT TO NO AVAIL. I FINALLY HAD TO DO A REVERSE IMAGE SEARCH TO DISCOVER THAT THIS PHOTO REALLY WAS FROM THE HAMMER FILM. IT'S A MAKEUP TEST FOR JONATHAN HARKER THAT WAS NOT USED IN THE FILM BUT WAS USED IN PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL AND ENDED UP IN A BUNCH OF MONSTER MOVIE MAGS. SADLY NO CUSHING OR LEE BUT A VINTAGE TRADING CARD OF ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL MONSTER MOVIES EVER MADE? YES PLEASE!

THE BACK OF THE CARD FOLLOWS THE TRADITIONAL MONSTER CARD FORMULA:

  • ONE COLOR INK ONLY. INKS ARE EXPENSIVE. IF IT'S HARD TO READ, GET BETTER EYES
  • THE BORDER IS MADE UP OF HAND DRAWN ART OF CREEPY CHARACTERS. QUALITY CAN RANGE ANYWHERE FROM JACK DAVIS TO THIS
  • THERE MUST BE A TERRIBLE JOKE OR PUN ON THE BACK. PREFERABLY ABOUT MURDER. THE KIDS LOVE THE MURDER. THIS SET GETS EXTRA POINTS FOR STRAIGHT UP ADMITTING THE JOKES ARE HORRIBLE

AND THERE YOU HAVE A MONSTER CARD!

I'VE READ MANY ARTICLES ABOUT VINTAGE MONSTER CARDS SO I RECOGNIZED THIS RIGHT AWAY WITH THE PUKE GREEN BORDER AND COOL SKULL NUMBER, I REMEMBERED ONE OF THE ARTICLEs DESCRIBED THEM AS CHEAPLY MADE AND OFTEN FOUND IN TERRIBLE CONDITION AND YEP, THAT'S THIS. ANY ITEM FROM THE GLORY DAYS OF FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND IS COOL IN MY BOOK, THE CHEAPER THE BETTER. THERE'S ALSO A WEIRD BLUE BOOTLEG VERSION OF THESE CARDS AND THE ZINE-LEVEL QUALITY OF THE THINGS IS GIVING ME BAD IDEAS THAT I DO NOT HAVE THE TIME TO EVEN BE CONSIDERING, I AM NOT YET DONE WITH THE MONSTERS THOUGH SO STAY TUNED

i can think of a few things that dracula could be shown doing that are more horror inducing than sleeping in his casket, which is open for some reason, thus potentially exposing him to sunlight and defeating the purpose of sleeping in a casket in the first place.

I'd probably complain big time if Topps included the card number on the front of a baseball card this year. But when it comes to vintage non-sports sets, it just feels right.
