September Vintage Card Show - Random Crap - Willie

I don't feel like writing tonight so I'm just going to show you my Willie

It's a small Willie and kinda off centered. No color either. But it's glossy! Glossy shiny Willie.

Also a little rough around the edges. Deckled Willie. One of these days I'm going to make a concerted push to complete one or more of these ridiculously common '60s insert sets.

Today is not that day.

But I do like mah Willie.

Traveling box loot

White Sox Cards' post on what he picked up from the Traveling Card Box of Awesomeness reminded me that I haven't done my post on that yet. And I was the first one to get the box! I am a bad blogger. What is the Traveling Box? It's a little project Bad Wax put together. A group of collectors all donate some good cards that they don't need and/or want. All the cards get put in a box and shipped around the country to various collectors who take out cards they want and replace them with cards of equal value. There was a ton of great stuff in the box but I limited myself to 5 cards and I let my son pick out one for himself. Here's my loot:

This is actually my son's loot. I allowed him to choose one for himself and he went with the Orioles' hat logo card of Jim Palmer. He almost snagged Steve's Frank Thomas/Jeff Bagwell/Carlos Delgado triple relic but opted for the Manu-Patch instead. I was relieved because I wasn't entirely sure what I could replace that one with.

First pickup out of the box was a 1969 Joe Niekro card I needed for my 'set'. I'm not really working on the 1969 Topps set and I probably never will, but I attacked the vintage in this box with great ferocity. If I didn't have it before, I had it now.

Next up is a 1971 Topps card of Barry's pop. 1971 Topps I will most likely end up collecting in full force as soon as my 1972 set is complete through at least series 4. I'm actually pretty close to completing Series 1.

1960 Topps is another of my favorite sets so I had to pick up the Ashburn. Richie Ashburn on the Cubs is a tad odd. Also odd is that I picked up more Cubs cards out of the box than Braves cards. Yes, I even left Braves in the box. I tried to replace relic with relic, vintage with vintage, etc. but this one I couldn't find a good match so I snuck in a nice Cub card as a replacement.

Ah, now we're in serious card territory. All cards were ranked in tiers, $5-10, $10-15, $15-20 and so on. I don't remember the exact tier of this card but it was in the next to highest tier worth of cards in the box. I have an accidentally good collection of Al Kaline cards as my mother brought me back a 9-pocket page full of vintage Kalines from a business trip when I was a kid. I did not have the '59 already, so this was good luck.

Ok now the doozy:

Amidst the vintage a 2012 card appears! So. I love Yogi Berra. He's right up there with Kurt Vonnegut, Bill Hicks and Pinkie Pie as far as personal spiritual gurus go for me. I also like old coins, especially silver ones. I saw this and thought I MUST HAZ. So I did. I had to pony up a fairly serious card to get it but I think I left the box in better shape than I found it.

I also snagged this custom card of a 1976 Topps Dale Murphy card. There were three custom cards in there but they weren't on the main card list for the box. I left two sketch cards in the box in exchange for this one. One silly, one mostly not silly.

We were instructed not to give away what cards were added to the box so the suspense would be greater. I scanned all of 'em anyway and I'm going to cheat a bit by showing off a little teaser of the stuff I put in the box. I hope I'm not kicked out of the rotation! Two cards I put in the box were picked up in this haul so at least the peeps like my stuff.

1969 Topps Braves Team Set

When I was updating my Braves Vintage want list the other day I realized that I apparently have never shown off my completed 1969 Topps braves team set. I am not entirely certain how this has not been posted before, but I can't seem to find it in my post archive. I suppose I could have labeled it poorly. If anyone wants to go through my 3000+ posts to check, feel free. In the meantime, I scanned it again for your Friday viewing pleasure.

In other news, even though I will never have time to play it, I really, really, reaaaally want to buy Skyrim now. Yay!

Transmogrified into being: My two Dicks

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is a very immature post, you should probably just stop reading now. Actually, delete the bookmark to this blog completely, we'll all be better for it.

Back when we could still trade on the Transmogrifier, everybody wanted my Dicks but I wouldn't let anybody touch them. I decided I just couldn't live without Dicks, so I gave Topps some money and they delivered me some fine looking Dicks. Now that I have my Dicks in my hand, let's see how they measure up. Penis.

1969 Topps Dick Bosman

Not in great shape but pretty typical of the cards I own from the '60s. The gloss is scuffed at several spots. All four corners are starting to get rounded. All four edges have at least one ding or nick. There are three small creases, one by his hand, one near his shoulder and one at the top left corner. Centering is off 35-65 on both axis. Even with the flaws it still looks decent as there are no real catastrophic problems with the card. This is your typical garden variety '60s common card.

The back looks great. The orangy-pink is strong, The black ink is bold and there's a kickass cartoon with a racing theme where Dick is driving one of those bullpen carts shaped like a baseball in competitive drag racing competitions. I wonder if Dick drove faster than he could throw?

1967 Topps Dick Kelley

My other Dick is kinda dirty. All that black schmutz all over Dick's uniform is more wax stains. 1967ers gave a good tip on how to get rid of crusty stuff on your Dick on my last wax-stained post so I pulled out a tube sock, rubbed it off and did a final buffing with a kleenex. Now my Dick is as clean as a whistle. (I warned you right up there at the top but you didn't listen). Even cleaned up - I wonder if this is technically card altering - Kelley is still not in better condition as the Bosman. All four corners are rounded to the point of starting to fray, the edges are dinged, there's a small crease in between the V and E in Braves and worst of all, there's a scuff right on Dick's face. A card can take a lot of abuse and still look good, but paper loss on the player's face is not one of them. It's still in acceptable shape for a card from 1967. I once had a '67 Diego Segui card that had been attacked with a hole punch. That was a sad looking card indeed.

The back is a little dirty and the green is faded, but like the front, it's acceptable. I had this card in my team set already so I was hoping for maybe getting an upgrade. No dice. This one goes in the box with the rest of the '67 commons.

Interestingly enough, both of these cards were acquired through straight code redemptions. I guess Topps just likes giving me the Dick.

Yankees from the Dollar Box

I still have some neet stuff left over from the Atlanta Sports Cards run to show off. They have a pretty cool row of dollar boxes there with a good mix of new and old, base and inserts. I've even found autographs in the dollar box before! I like scrounging through for oldies, which means poring though the "original 16" teams. Red Sox are good for oldies. So are the Phillies. I guess the Cubs are too, but I'll try the Cards or Dodgers or Indians first, thankyouverymuch. However, there is no dollar box oldies team like the New York Mickyficking Yankees.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I HATE the New York Yankees. A-Fraud, Cap'n Cheezburger and Tei$eira can all take a flying leap into the Hudson wearing cement bathing suits for all I care and I'm glad the Halos finally took one in the series yesterday. However, the Old York Yankees I love. The cut off point is somewhere around Mattingly but I can't pinpoint it exactly. '20s? '30's? Hells yes! '60s? '70s? Alllll Riiiiiight! '50s? NIRVANA! So I scrounged the dollar Yankee box looking for one old card and found three.

1964 Topps Young Aces

This is the Holy Grail of Infamous Pitcher cards. Al Downing? He gave up a certain home run that is somewhat well known. Jim Bouton? Well, if a baseball fan don't know Jim Bouton, then Dayf's gonna do some shoutin'. This also a pretty good demarcation line between the great Yankee Teams of the '50s and early '60s and the Bllleeeaaaargghhh Yankee teams of the late '60s and early '70s.

1969 Topps Mickey Mantle Checkist

If you have a chance... to get a vintage Mickey Mantle card... ANY vintage Mickey Mantle card... for a BUCK... YOU FREAKING DO IT.

Anyone else who wants to "just do it" ASC had two or three more of these in various stages of mouse nibblings in that box as well. Get to 'em!

1950 Bowman

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET A 1950 BOWMAN CARD FOR A BUCK?? Ok, so the corners are rounder than a mint 1951 Topps card and it's got a double cross crease going right through the dude's face, but 1950! Bowman! So who is this guy?

Fred Sanford

The "G" stands for "Gamer". Or "goat" perhaps, as the Yankee pitcher was mercilessly booed by Yankee fans who expected more from the righty after that $100,000 trade mentioned on the card back. Did you know Redd Foxx's real last name was Sanford? Did you also know that both Fred and Redd's first name was also John? Now ya do!
