DEEP THOUGHTS ABOUT SOME DOLLAR BOX PICKUPS

I HAVE FOUND YET ANOTHER DECENT CARD SHOP WITHIN A HALF HOUR DRIVE FROM MY HOUSE. FOR THOSE COUNTING, THAT'S THREE DECENT SHOPS, A FLEA MARKET AND A MONTHLY SHOW NEAR ME. THIS IS UTTERLY FANTASTIC OR IT WOULD BE IF I HAD A LOT OF MONEY. I DO HAVE A TINY LITTLE BIT OF MONEY SO I CAN STILL HAVE MY FUN BUT I HAVE TO MAKE A LOT MORE TOUGH CHOICES NOW. I WENT INTO THE SHOP DETERMINED TO BUY THAT JAMAAL WILKES CARD I NEED TO COMPLETE THE 1979-80 TOPPS BASKETBALL SET BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT. SO I PIVOTED TO PLAN B: SPEND FIVE BUCKS FROM THE DOLLAR BOXES AND ONLY FIVE BUCKS. THIS FAILED AS WELL, I SPENT SEVEN BUCKS TOTAL. TWO OF THE CARDS WERE NO-BRAINERS, THEY WILL BE SEEN IN OTHER POSTS. IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO FINALLY DECIDE ON THESE FIVE HERE AS THERE WAS A BUNCH OF COOL STUFF IN THE DOLLAR BOXES. I AM A LITTLE BITTER THEY ARE NOT QUARTER BOXES, OR AT LEAST FIFTY CENT BOXES. IF THEY WERE EVEN 6 FOR $5 I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE SPENT TWICE AS MUCH BUT THAT'S THE HOBBY IN 2023. THE STUFF I DID GET WAS KIND OF ODD EVEN FOR ME AND IT GOT ME THINKING ABOUT THE CHOICES I ULTIMATELY MADE AND WHAT I LEFT BEHIND. HERE'S SOME ANALYSIS ON WHAT I BOUGHT AND WHAT IT BEAT OUT AND WHY DID I EVEN DO THAT? IT MAY SHED SOME LIGHT ON WHAT KIND OF COLLECTOR I AM NOW IN THE POST-INFLUENCERS ERA. OR IT MIGHT JUST HIGHLIGHT THAT I WAS STARTING TO GET TIRED AND MY JUDGEMENT WAS IMPAIRED

DIFFICULT CHOICE #1: AL HORFORD PANINI CONTENDERS DRAFT PICKS GREEN FOIL EXPLODEY SHINIES WHITE JERSEY VARIATION

THIS CHOICE WAS KINDA OBVIOUS AS I HAVE AN ACTUAL BINDER OF HORFORD CARDS AND HE'S ONE OF A HANDFUL OF PLAYERS I'VE TAKEN THE TIME TO ENTER MY COLLECTION INTO TCDB. YOU KNOW I LOVE THE SHINY, AND THIS CARD IS SUPER EXTRA SHINY WITH EXPLOSIONS AND GOOFT GREEN FOIL. ON THE OTHER HAND, I ALREADY HAVE ANOTHER VARIATION OF THIS SAME CARD WITH DIFFERENT GIMMICKS. PLUS AS A DAWGS FAN IT IS A LITTLE PAINFUL TO GRAB A FLORIDA CARD. EXTRA SHINY COVERS UP A LOT OF SINS THOUGH

CARDS I PASSED UP: SEVERAL ATLANTA HAWKS ROOKIE CARDS INCLUDING DE'ANDRE HUNTER AND ONYEKA OKONGWU

THERE WERE QUITE A FEW ROOKIE CARDS OF LOCAL GUYS IN THE DOLLAR BOX, ALTHOUGH SADDIQ BEY WERE ALL MARKED WITH $2 STICKERS WHICH IRRITATED ME GREATLY. THE HUNTER AND OKONGWU ROOKIES WERE VERY TEMPTING. BUT DE'ANDRE HAS BEEN A VERY GOOD PLAYER SO FAR WHICH DOESN'T QUITE CUT IS AS A NUMBER 4 OVERALL PICK. PASSING UP ONYEKA WORRIES ME MORE AS I DO NOT HAVE AN OO ROOKIE YET AND IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE HE TAKES OVER FOR CAPELA AND PEOPLE FIGURE OUT HOW GOOD HE IS. ULTIMATELY I DECIDED THAT I WILL PROBABLY BE ABLE TO PICK UP ROOKIE CARDS OF BOTH OF THEM ON COMC FOR A BUCK EVENTUALLY AND THAT I'D RATHER HAVE THE FLASHY SHINY CARD TO ADD TO THE BINDER

FINAL VERDICT:
I MADE THE RIGHT CALL ON THIS ONE, THE ADDITION TO TCDB PUT ME BACK INTO THE HORFORD TOP TEN

DIFFICULT CHOICE #2: 2000 TOPPS TEK FRANK THOMAS

ANOTHER THING THAT HAS BEEN WEIGHING ON MY MIND LATELY IS WHAT SETS AM I ACTUALLY COLLECTING. I HAVEN'T GIVEN UP ON ANY FLAGSHIP SETS YET (ALTHOUGH PANINI DONRUSS IS VERY CLOSE) BUT EVERYTHING ELSE I REALLY HAVE TO THINK ABOUT. I GAVE UP ON HERITAGE LONG AGO AND I NO LONGER HAVE THE ABILITY TO KEEP UP WITH GINTER. A LOT OF RETRO SETS FROM 20 YEARS AGO LIKE ARCHIVES AND TOPPS206 HAVEN'T BEEN TOUCHED IN YEARS. STUFF LIKE BOWMAN I'M READY TO CHUCK OUT THE WINDOW. EVEN SETS I PUT TOGETHER WANTLISTS FOR LIKE LEAF IS USUALLY BECAUSE SOMEONE SPECIFICALLY ASKED ME FOR IT. I AM FINDING THERE ARE A FEW ODDBALL SETS, MOSTLY FROM THE 90S, THAT I REALLY DO LIKE AND WANT TO COLLECT. TOPPS TEK IS ONE OF THOSE SETS. MY GENERAL RULE IS: IF I SEE TOPPS TEK FOR A DECENT PRICE, I GET TOPPS TEK. THIS IS TOPPS TEK. A BUCK IS A DECENT PRICE FOR BIG HURT. I GOT IT

CARD I PASSED UP: 1997 EX-2000 HIDEO NOMO

THIS WAS BY FAR THE HARDEST CHOICE OF THE DAY. I LOVE TEK BUT I LUUURRRVE EX-2000. I WOULD DARE TO SAY THAT EX-2000 IS THE BEST LOOKING SET OF THE 90S. THEY ARE ALSO SEEMINGLY MUCH HARDER TO FIND AS WELL. ALONG WITH TEK, EX-2000 IS ONE OF THE ODDBALL SETS I'VE RECENTLY TAKEN THE TIME TO GET WANTLISTS TOGETHER FOR AND IT WAS A FIENDISHLY DIFFICULT CHOICE BETWEEN THOMAS AND NOMO BUT TEK ULTIMATELY WON OUT. WHY NOT JUST GET BOTH, YOU IDIOT? BECAUSE MY BRAIN WASN'T WORKING THAT WAY. I HAD A BIG STACK OF CARDS I PULLED THAT GOT WHITTLED DOWN TO ABOUT FIFTEEN, THEN I HAD TO WHITTLE THEM DOWN TO FIVE AND IT WAS EASIER ON MY BRAIN TO PUT CARDS IN GROUPS AND AND CHOOSE ONE CARD PER GROUP. IF I HAD BRACKETS OF CARDS GOING THROUGH ELIMINATION ROUNDS I WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE TIL MIDNIGHT TRYING TO DECIDE.

FINAL VERDICT:
THE FINAL CHOICE CAME DOWN TO A TIEBREAKER: I NEEDED BOTH CARDS, BUT I ALSO NEEDED THE BACKGROUND PATTERN ON THE TEK CARD. I WILL KICK MYSELF IF NOMO IS GONE UPON MY NEXT TRIP TO THE SHOP BUT I AM AT PEACE WITH MY DECISION

DIFFICULT CHOICE #3: 2022 CHROME HEART OF THE CITY JOSE ALTUVE

OK SO AT LEAST TWO OF YOU OUT THERE ARE SEEING THIS CARD AND THINKING THAT MY BLOOD SUGAR MUST HAVE CRASHED AND MY BRAIN HAD THE DUMB FOR CHOOSING THIS CARD OVER LITERALLY ANY OF THE OTHERS. IN REALITY, THIS WAS THE EASIEST DECISION OF ALL OF THEM. I LIKE THE ASTROS AND ADOPTED THEM AS MY AL TEAM WHEN THEY PICKED UP GATTIS AND MCCANN. I LIKE JOSE ALTUVE, I THINK HE'S A GREAT FUCKIN PLAYER. AND MOST OF ALL I LOVE THIS CARD, I THINK IT LOOKS GORGEOUS. I UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT THAT YANKEE AND DODGER FANS THINK THE ASTROS ARE WORSE THAN SATAN AND THAT JOSE IS THE MOST DEVILISH OF THE DEMONS, BUT GUESS WHAT, I FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT YOUR TEAMS

CARDS I PASSED UP: A HANDFUL OF EARLY 90S UPPER DECK AND FLEER INSERTS

A MAJOR FOCUS OF MINE THE PAST FEW YEARS HAS BEEN ATTACKING UPPER DECK INSERTS FROM 1990 TO 1993 AND I'M HAPPY TO SAY I'VE PUT A MAJOR DENT IN MY WANTLISTS RECENTLY AND HAVE EVEN COMPLETED A FEW INSERT SETS. THAT BEING SAID, MOST OF THOSE CARDS SHOULD BE IN QUARTER BOXES, NOT DOLLAR BOXES. HONESTLY THE ONLY CARDS OUT OF THE PILE THAT LOST TO ALTUVE THAT I CAN REMEMBER IS A COUPLE 1993 HOME RUN HEROES CARDS. TOM BRUNANSKY MAYBE? FOR A BUCK? EEEEH

FINAL VERDICT:
THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST LOOKING CARD I GOT OUT OF THE DOLLAR BOXES AND I WENT SUPER SHINY HEAVY WITH MY PICKUPS. THIS IS ALSO THE ONLY INSTANCE WHERE I'M NOT WANTING TO RUN BACK TO THE SHOP TO TRY TO FIND THE CARDS I LEFT BEHIND

DIFFICULT CHOICE #4: 1998 PACIFIC AURORA ON DECK LASER CUTS FRANK THOMAS

PACIFIC INSERTS ARE THE BEST, DIE-CUT PACIFIC INSERTS ARE THE BESTEREST. THIS AURORA INSERT HAS THE DIE CUTTING ON THE OUTSIDE UNLIKE MOST OF THE DIE-CUTS THEY ARE KNOWN FOR. IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD THOUGH AND GIVES IT ALMOST A 3-D EFFECT ON THE CROSSED BAT HANDLES. WITH A LIMIT ON THE NUMBER OF CARDS I COULD PICK UP I WAS TRYING TO GET A NICE VARIETY OF STYLES AND PLAYERS BUT STILL ENDED UP WITH TWO OF FRANK THOMAS. AND WHY NOT? FRANK THOMAS IS AWESOME AND IS A BIG REASON I WAS A WHITE SOX FAN IN THE 90S. I STILL BITTERLY LAMENT THE MISSED BRAVES-SOX WORLD SERIES IN 1993. WITH MY CARD BUDGET DWINDLING I'VE NOTICED CERTAIN PLAYERS COME HOME WITH ME MORE OFTEN THAN NOT. GUYS LIKE REGGIE, RICKEY AND YOGI. STARTING TO THINK FRANK SHOULD BE OFFICIALLY ADDED TO THAT LIST

CARD I PASSED UP: A DIFFERENT DIE CUT PACIFIC INSERT

I DON'T REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE INSERT BUT IT'S ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE A BASEBALL WITH FLAMES COMING OUT THE BACK AND THERE'S A PITCHER ON THE CARD. IT WASN'T A BIG NAME - RAMON MARTINEZ MAYBE? - BUT IT LOOKS COOL AS HELL. I HAD TROUBLE DECIDING ON THIS ONE BUT I THOUGHT I MIGHT ALREADY HAVE THE CARD. LOOKING THROUGH MY INSERT BOXES, I DIDN'T SEE IT

FINAL VERDICT:
NOT UPSET AT ALL AT PICKING UP A COOL BIG HURT CARD BUT IF THAT FIREBALL INSERT ISN'T IN THE DOLLAR BOX THE NEXT TIME I GO BACK I WILL BE SAD

DIFFICULT CHOICE #5: 1996 LEAF TOTAL BASES KIRBY PUCKETT

AS YOU MIGHT SUSPECT I AM NOT THE BIGGEST FAN OF KIRBY PUCKETT. I WAS HAPPY FOR HIM IN 1987 BUT AFTER THAT NOT SO MUCH. SO IT MAY BE SURPRISING THAT I PICKED THIS ONE OUT OF A GIANT PILE UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND THAT 90S LEAF INSERTS MAKE ME GO ALL GOOFY. ESPECIALLY IN THE LATER YEARS WHEN THEY GIMMICKED THEM ALL UP LIKE CRAZY. TEXTURES! HOLOFOIL! DIE-CUTS! METAL! WOOD! EVERYTHING THEY COULD THINK OF THEY TRIED AND MOST OF THEM WERE SERIAL NUMBERED! THE NEAT BASE TEXTURE ON THE FRONT IS COOL BUT IT WAS THOSE GOLD STAMPED NUMBERS ON THE BACK THAT REALLY GOT ME. THE REST OF THE PILE HAD NO CHANCE

CARDS I PASSED UP: A MENAGERIE OF ODDBALL 90S INSERTS THE BEST OF WHICH WAS A SKYBOX ALLEN IVERSON ODDBALL

MY PROCESS WHEN DIGGING IN DIME/QUARTER/DOLLAR BOXES IS TO PICK OUT EVERYTHING THAT LOOKS INTERESTING LIKE A DERANGED MAGPIE AND THEN SORT THROUGH THE PILE LATER TO MAKE MY FINAL CHOICES. LIKE I SAID EARLIER MY PILE WAS UP TO ABOUT 40-50 CARDS BY THE TIME I WRAPPED IT UP AND THERE WERE QUITE A FEW 90S INSERTS IN THERE. OF THE TWO I REMEMBER MOST CLEARLY, ONE WAS THE AFOREMENTIONED IVERSON THAT WAS A STRANGE EMBOSSED THING WITH ONE HALF FOLDED OVER ON THE BACK SO YOU COULD SEE TWO DIFFERENT PICTURES DEPENDING ON WHICH HALF WAS FOLDED. THERE WAS NO PICURE ON THE FRONT SO I'M NOT SURE OF THE POINT OF IT? SKYBOX LOVED FOLDY CARDS AT THE TIME THOUGH, I GIVE EM PROPS FOR EXPERIMENTING. THE OTHER ONE WAS THIS STRANGE DIE-CUT BEAN SHAPED INSERT CARD THAT HAD A METAL RING PUNCHED INTO IT LIKE IT WAS A LUGGAGE TAG OR SOMETHING. I HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT AND MIGHT HAD PICKED IT IF IT HAD BEEN ANYONE BESIDES SHANE BATTIER. WHILE TEMPTING, NEITHER CARD WERE SERIAL NUMBERED ALTHOUGH I'D WAGER THEY WERE TOUGH HITS

FINAL VERDICT:
I REALLY WANT TO GO BACK FOR THOSE FLEER BASKETBALL INSERTS BUT I'M HAPPY WITH NUMBERED KIRBY

SO THERE'S MY FIVE. ON A DIFFERENT DAY IT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT FIVE. I KNOW FOR A FACT I LEFT THE ALTUVE BEHIND ON A PREVIOUS VISIT. YES THERE WAS A PREVIOUS VISIT, THAT POST IS HALF WRITTEN ALREADY BUT I NEEDED TO DO THIS ONE WHILE IT WAS FRESH IN MY MIND. THINKING ABOUT THE STUFF I'M PICKING UP LATELY IS DEFINITELY SHOWING ME THAT THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF I VALUE MORE NOW THAN I DID A FEW YEARS AGO. FAVORITE PLAYER COLLECTIONS, 90S INSERTS AND CHASING MORE SMALL ODDBALL SETS TO GO ALONG WITH THE OLD STANDBYS OF VINTAGE SETS AND FAVORITE TEAMS. I'M STILL HAVING FUN, AND MAYBE I'M HAVING SMARTER FUN

Hall of Fame - Frank Thomas

Frank Thomas was my favorite non-Brave player in the '90s. The Braves selected Tyler Houston one pick before Frank. Can you imagine if Frank Thomas was the Braves' first baseman in the '90s? I can. It's my reality now. Frank Thomas has always played for the Braves. My doctors keep telling me to take my meds but I'm really much happier like this.

I spent so damn much money in the early '90s buying overpriced 1990 Score packs chasing this card and I never pulled it from a single pack ever. Ben McDonalds I pulled. Chuck Knoblauchs I pulled. Even Tyler Houstons I pulled. Not. One. Frank. Then a couple years ago I bought the complete 1990 Score set for $5. In a binder. Selah.

Unless you collected cards in the '90s you have no idea how amazingly cool Studio Heritage inserts were. This one from 1994 showing Frank in a Sox uniform from the '30s with the sepia photo of Comiskey in the background on textured paper stock with a touch of foil for class is almost too amazing for words.

I have a Thomas autograph, but this bizarre Upper deck insert that combines a see through acetate window with a super thin layer of printed wood all glued together and threatening to curl up like some 2010 Chrome is just so incredibly neat. It's also one of the few cards I can distinctly remember where I was when I pulled it from the pack. (at a Kroger in Marietta with my grandmother, to be exact)

Card Show Top 20 - #6 Original Frank

I just got my little green postcard in the mail signifying an impending Sports Memories show in the ATL. Good Lord, it's this weekend! I need to sell off some plasma! Harvest my other kidney! Go to the sperm bank and see how much they'll pay me not to! Vintage cards await!

As excited as I am, this does mean that in a week I'll have a big pile of new goodies to post about... WHEN I STILL HAVEN'T FINISHED THE POSTS FROM THE LAST SHOW. Yes, I am a complete slacker, but this one here's not my fault. Blogger ate my post a few weeks ago when the whole shebang went all kafloozle. Left me nothing but a title, two images and the countdown list. I just haven't had the heart to re-write everything. Not that I had written a whole lot, but it's the principle of the thing.

Looks like if I'm gonna post anything at all, ever, I better do it quick before the new backlog of posts hit. So here's the half-assedly rewritten post of the #6 top card I got at the FCB card show - what was it - four months ago now?

Frank Thomas

No , not that one. The original one.

1958 Topps Frank Thomas card signed by the Real McCoy. Guess where I got this sucker. Go ahead, guess. I've written enough about them in this series. Oh wait - I posted those like two months ago. Damn I'm slack! Ok, remember the utterly ridiculous dollar box with the insane old oddball stuff in it? No? Well click on the links then. I'll wait. Remember now? YEAH IT WAS FROM THAT BOX! No, really! Random autographs of players from the 50's in a dollar box! Complete madness! Mild delirium at least. Not that crazy at all actually. Dollar autographs are a dime a dozen. Sure you can find autographs for a buck a lot more frequently nowadays, but what the heck, I like it. I might have paid a buck just for the '58 card in another dollar box.

I don't really want to rewrite all the biographical stuff about Frank I had in the last post, so just read this well done page instead. I know, yellow text on a purple background. It's worth it. Or you can go straight to the horse's mouth and check out The Original Frank's very own corner of the internet. He's got a blog and everything! He also collects cards, anyone have any 1952 Topps high numbers lying around that they can trade him? Or you could just request an autograph in exchange for a charity donation, which may very well be where this here card came from.

Ok, so it's not officially certified by Topps or Upper Deck or PSA or whoever. A quick search of autograph pics show it looks good enough for government work.  Besides, do you really trust all the 'official' 'certified' ''sources'' for autographs what with all the shenanigans that have been going on in this hobby? I bet some of you Joe Collectors out there would trust it if a company chopped the card all to hell and pasted the sig inside a terrible cut auto insert card, wouldn't you. And then maybe encase that abomination inside a BGS holder? That'll never happen on my watch! You crummy card companies won't chop up this card for a gimmick! No way! I might have to put this card in with my other set '58s to hide it from the gimmick choppers. Don't worry, '58 Frank. I'll protect you from this dystopian hobby.

The Top 20 List:

#20 Reds' Heavy Artillery

Card of the Week - 1/10/11

Card of the week time again. You think Chrome has curling problems? Wait 'till you get a load of this bad boy...

1997 Upper Deck Amazing Greats
Frank Thomas

In 1997 the Golden Age of Inserts was coming to a close. The insert escalation wars would soon usher in Relic cards that would dominate and ultimately kill off the creative insert market. While the end was near, there were still many beautiful and ingenious inserts floating around in '97. Upper Deck's Amazing Greats was one of the nicer and weirder inserts around.

"Material" cards were beginning to be all the rage. Companies were trying to mimic real wood, canvas, leather, cloth, metal and all sorts of strange materials on cards. Once the faux material market had become saturated the only place to go was with real materials. Upper Deck went there with this 1:138 pack insert featuring a really really thin slice of actual wood fused with a plastic back. UD then printed the front image directly on the wood and topped it off with a holographic logo in the top corner. I'm not entirely sure what kind of wood is used, but it is real wood and you can feel the grain. The printing is surprisingly crisp considering it is on a very porous material. There is a die cut diamond in the middle of the wood for the portrait, which is printed on the plastic backing.

As cool as the front is, the back is also designed very well. A reverse of the front portrait is seen inside a similar baseball diamond that is surrounded by a colorful mottled background. On the right side is a dark panel with the Amazing Greats logo, the team logo and a short highlight paragraph. The whole thing looks fantastic. As crazy as this set looks, it was only the third craziest insert in base Upper Deck that year, after the die-cut, serial numbered to 500 Blue Chips and the inaugural Game Jersey cards. But I don't have either of those, and unless it was the Blue Chip Chipper (why the heck was Chipper Jones in a prospect set in 1997 anyway?) I wouldn't like it as much as this one.

This is one of those cards I remember exactly where I was when I pulled it. I was home from college and I took my grandmother to Kroger to pick up some groceries. They had a box of Upper Deck at the checkout aisle and I snuck a pack or two into the cart. Hey, I was in school and could still get away with it. She paid and I cracked open a pack right there in the store and saw woodsy Frank smiling back at me. I managed to avoid making a scene but was floating the rest of the day. The sucker curled up pretty quickly after pulling it out of the pack, I was freaking out that I'd accidentally crack it trying to get it flat and put it right back in the pack in between the rest of the cards until I could find something sturdy to protect it. Putting it in a toploader helps, but as soon as you take it out it tries to curl a bit.

I had to choose a card of Big Hurt tonight. Looking through the blogs I've seen a lot of posts about the BCS Title Game tonight. Most proclaim that they are rooting for the Ducks. As a proud fan of the Only Real Football Conference  I feel obligated to support the SEC representative at the Fiesta Bowl with one of their greatest alums. Go Auburn! War Eagle! Or Tigers! Whichever one it is this week!

Pacific Gold Crown Die-Cut Tribute to Griffey Jr.

Yep, I jinxed it.

WHY CAN'T THERE BE ONE FREAKING BRAVES SIGNING THIS YEAR THAT ISN'T FRAUGHT WITH NEEDLESS DRAMA

Now Griffey hasn't decided, and might be going back to Seattle and blah blah blah. The beat writer seems to think he'll still be a Brave but he's as fed up as the rest of us. At least Kelly Johnson settled his arbitration case.

So anyway, I dug up my Griffey cards yesterday and found a treasure trove of whacked-out '90s inserts. I hadn't realized before now that I had 4 of the 7 Griffey Pacific Gold Crown Die-Cut cards. I'm missing 1995, 1997 and 1998 but 4 ain't bad. This was one of my favorite insert sets inthe '90s and they still look pretty good today. If anyone has an image of the three I'm missing let me know and I'll put 'em all up for posterity. I found a few cards from other players so you can get a good look at the designs.

1995

All the die cut designs were the same so if you've seen one you've seen 'em all. The first set had flashy holographic foil with the player's name stamped at the bottom in a weird Lord of the Ringsy font. Kind of like Papyrus, but not. This is one card I just can't seem to track down.

1996

Ah, the classic design. In my opinion this is the best looking of all the sets. The crown and foil name are stamed with plain gold foil with the player's initials making a pattern. In this case, KG. This is Pacific at the top of their game.

1997

This is a classy looking set too, with a gold crown and a Stadium Club looking stripe at the bottom with the player's name. The textured foil is radiating out of the crown and the position is stamped under the team logo in Spanish and English. They tried something new this year too:

Triple Crowns. Not a fan of this set even though it was much harder to find than the regular Crowns. Sometimes more is less.
1998

Classy went out the window for this disco design. There's textured gold foil diamonds at the top with silver holographic foil in the background. This card is perfect '90s excess. There was one classy Crown this year though:

'Nuff said.

1999

Pacific toned it down a little, but this set is still pretty out there. There's a pebbled texture on the crown, team logos inside the crown and gold foil and silver holofoil all around the border. I like how the holofoil makes the player's name pop out, even if it is in a space age futuristic font.

2000

Dogs and Cats... Living Together... MASS HYSTERIA. A complete explosion of holofoil with fireworks and 2000 all over it. If you're going to go over the top, THIS is the way to go over the top. My favorite design after 1996.

2001

Back to the classy. This one's a little busy with the rainbow background haunted with Pacific and team logos and the the gold foil border, but the flat gold and blue foil crown looks nice. This one is numbered 30/100 so I think it's a parallel. Plain ol' boring Gold Crowns have red foil. But wait, there's more...

HOLY CRAP AUTOGRAPHS. If Griffey doesn't want to sign with the Braves, I'm sure the Big Hurt wouldn't mind coming to the ATL...
