Card Of the Week 3/03/08

Once again, there's no way I'm going to get to this tonight. I'll deliver the full monty tomorrow (maybe, tomorrow's schedule is looking awful too...) and in the meantime let's just say I've been drooling over this card ever since I saw it in the pre-sell checklist. And it's now mine. MINE ALL MINE!

Ha! Wednesday! That's only mostly terribly late.

So what's this here then. Why it's another of Topps' Trading Card History with absolutely no history on the back of the thing. As on many of the other cards, it only says "1941 Baseball Card" on the back, likely because rival Upper Deck used the design in an impossible to get boxtopper insert numbered to 15 copies each. That's 1500 total cards for the entire 100-card set. Meh. If they had made a seperate retail only insert with a different color ink on the back I'd still be buying Goudey blasters but oh well. Upper Deck didn't really need my money anyway. Here's a copy of the Upper Deck version that I ganked off eBay for comparison:

So what is it? It's the 1941 Double Play design. Double Play was put out by the same company who did the Play Ball set from 1939-1941. Upper Deck did a couple homage products to that set a few years ago. The 2003 set was great, the 2004 version is one of the worst trading card sets of all time. But let's save that for later. But we'll save that for later.

Double play cards are very simple. Each card has two players on the front with a blank back. The front has a large sepia colored photo for each player with the name, stats and card number underneath. The photos are a portrait or action shot, with the layout of the portrait cards being horizontal and the Action shots being vertical, like the card above. Each card has two numbers on it, one for each player. This can cause problems, as seen below:

These cards were often cut up into individual cards. This pretty much negates most of the value but hey, a vintage card is a vintage card. The set is 150 players (or 75 cards) in size and the cards numbered 101-150 are more scarce than the low series. The set has a lot of stars in it, including DiMaggio, Ted Williams and the first card of Pee Wee Reese. 1941 is a significant year for trading cards as those are the last major sets released before the war would curtail such luxuries. A lot of these cards ended up in paper drives as well which is a reason why a lot of pre war cards (especially 1941 cards) are so scarce. These cards don't have the high profile as some of its fellow 30's era gum cards and are fairly affordable. Expect to pay several hundred dollars for a Williams or DiMaggio, but an acceptable copy of a common can be found for well under 20 bucks. Tiptons like the one above are even cheaper. Wanna see some? Here's a gallery thanks to the work of Dan Austin.

This card made the cut as Card of the Week for the very same reason my first Card of the Week did. When I first saw the sell sheet for 2008 Topps I looked over the checklist, saw the Tex and Frenchy card and flipped out. I've wanted it since then and I snagged it in a lot of these History cards on the Bay. Mark and Jeff will be anchoring the lineup this year and it's neat seeing them on this old style card, like Ted Williams and Joe Cronin from the original set. Let's cross our fingers and hope they can hit like Ted and Joe this year.

Great Awesome Fantastic Jeff Francoeur Interview

If Jeff Francoeur comes anywhere near the high goals he's set for himself he will be a first ballot Hall of Famer. And it sounds like he is working his ass off to meet those goals. This interview has gotten me more exited about this season than anything else I've read all year. Forget about Tex. Tex is gone after this year. I have accepted that fact and made peace with it. Lock up the Lilburn Flash now. Make Frenchy happy and watch as he ends up with his number on the outfield wall. Do it, Frank.

It's that time of year

Every Spring Training (or at least every spring training the past few years) I've picked up this book and started reading.

Now, I don't necessarily read the entire thing each year. Sometimes I blow through the book quickly, sometimes I get about halfway through and get distracted. One time I remembered it was time to read it, looked for the book and gave up when I could only find my copy of the sequel. I thought about reading it though, and I laughed when I recalled the boner on the bus joke, so it technically counts.

I picked up this copy at the Cobb Countly Library sale last fall for a quarter. My old paperback copy was starting to molt pages so it was time to upgrade. One of these days I'm going to find a hardback copy of the edition of with Jim in the Braves uniform on the cover. I've seen 'em on eBay, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I think subconsciously I'm waiting to find an autographed copy in some dusty old bookstore. You never know what treasures await in old bookstores...

This is one of my absolute favorite books, it combines my love of baseball, humor and my cynical take on the world. It's a pretty fascinating read and a neat look into the major leagues before free agency. It's too bad a book like this couldn't be written today, nowadays we get the Mitchell Report. If I had pulled out the book just a week earlier I would be compelled to get a card for each chapter and post it on the date of the chapter with a quote and such, but that's not gonna happen. Thankfully I'm too OCD to be able to start that a few days after the first date in the book. Maybe next year. You still might see a few related posts popping up here and there though.

(seriously, read this book)

The 792: Gallery 451-468

Here's more classic 80's card for you to enjoy, I'm going to make a push to get all these posted by opening day (not likely, but I'll give it a shot), so you'll be seeing a lot on them in the near future. Don't know what the heck this is? Check out Ben Henry's commentary (this was his idea, you know) or click here to see a whole mess of 'em at once.

2008 Heritage Box Break - Part 3: Packs 10-14

Pack 10:
27 Greg Maddux
101 Carlos Ruiz
114 Orlando Cabrera
421 Jamie Moyer
379 Franklin Morales
210 JJ Putz
C46 chrome Barry Zito #0984/1959
330 Ty Wigginton

Maddog is a nice way to start the pack. The chrome is nice too, I still like Zito even though he had a bad year in '07. He looks really strange in anything other than an A's uniform. Nice grip on the ball from Barry. I was laughing at ancient Jamie Moyer's crowded stat line on the back of his card until I soberly realized the back of Maddux's card was just as crowded. Then I saw Greg had 127 more wins and I could laugh again. I did a triple take when I saw Orlando Cabrera in a Whie Sox uniform, but the cartoon on the back helpfully explained that Orlando was traded from the angels to the White Sox over the winter. There's lots of good stuff in these cartoons, did you know Carlos Ruiz calls an intelligent game? With a .259 batting average he better. The black back cards have gone from really good to blah in the last few packs. Maybe they will pick up. Oh one more thing:
AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
JJ Putz has the brick wall for his background. Topps photographers, Seattle division, you suck.

Pack 11:
128 Kevin Hart RC
133 Radhames Liz RC
161 Josh Fogg
365 Adrian Beltre
284 Luis Gonzalez
21 Troy Tulowitzki
225 Pedro Martinez
69 black San Francisco Giants checklist 96-143

I got all excited about pulling a Pedro SP, but I checked the list on Beckett and he's not short printed. Basically, everything with a number 426 or higher is short printed except for five random low numbers that are short printed and five random high numbers that aren't. Thanks Topps, for making things difficult once again. Also Pedro's nickname is "Petey" according to cartoon nuggets of knowledge. Radhames Liz is apparently the God Zeus as he can throw lightning bolts. Tulowitzki's cartoon rubs his triple play against the Braves in my face again. The lame black cards continue, this time with a Giants checklist card. I think Topps printed up a proof set and threw it up into the air and chose the ones that landed face up for their Black back checklist. There's some really random names on there. The only Brave BB's are Tim Hudson and Chucky James. Also no short print black backs either which sucks. If there's going to be a stupid parallel set it could at least be a help in filling out those short prints. Oh one more thing: Adrian Beltre, Seattle Mariners. Argh.

Pack 12:
160 Jack Wilson
240 Carlos Gomez
284 Raul Ibanez ARGH
106 Troy Glaus
413 Edwin Jackson
333 Kevin Kouzmanoff
CONGRATULATIONS You are due to receive a certified Real One Autograph of

Of who? Minnie Minoso? Yogi Berra? Joba? WHO??

Oh goody. Freddy Sanchez.

265 black Aaron Rowand.

Well, at least I got a hit. That's something. Other than that this was a pretty scroungy pack of cards. Kouzmanoff? Gomez? Wilson? Blech. Xes on a checklist all of them. Ibanez is yet ANOTHER Mariner who had to stand up against the firing squad wall. That wall is in the background of every single Mariner I have pulled. Six for six. They should be putting the GM up against the wall for that Horacio Ramirez trade, not the players. I have a pile of high priced Edwin Jackson rookies that are now pretty much worthless. I should probably throw them out so Edwin can have a career year in '08. Arron Rowand looks miserable on his pink-bordered card. I don't care how good a player he is, the only thing I'll ever associate him with is the last out of the 2007 All Star game. The saving grace of this pack is the cartoon on Carlos Gomez's card. It looks like he's going to try to light his farts.

Pack 13:
151 Sammy Sosa
199 Russell Martin
349 Erik Bedard
164 Gil Meche
311 Jeff Suppan
424 Juan Uribe
179 Austin Kearns
94 black Chicago White Sox checklist 141-191

Slammin Sammy! This pack is much better than the last one even though I got another black back team card. Russel Nathan Coltrane Jeanson Martin helped to win me a fantasy title last year. He was a consolation prize for missing out on McCann too... It helped I got Miguel Cabrera in the eighth round (yes I said eighth) due to a weird autodraft setting. Fantasy ball is looking bleak this year, work banned it, my regular NL-only league just turned into to an auction style pay league, and I got banninated from another league for some reason. (by the time I finished this post I got unbanninated) Someone please join Chemgod's league already so we have more than 6 teams! Eric Bedard is still an Oriole on his card so he didn't get stood up against the wall (against... the... wall...). Bedard and Meche have identical cartoons, Erik's is just cropped a little more tightly. Suppan I don't care about... Uribe's stats are terrible (although his cartoon is hilarious) and Austin Kearns is the man. I like the Nationals. It's easy to root for a division rival when you know they'll suck. One thing that disturbs me is that I haven't gotten an SP in a while now. If a crappy redemption card replaced an SP I'll be pissed. I better get 8 in this box. I haven't gotten a Brave in a while either... Ennui is starting to set in.

72 Zach Duke
238 Todd Helton
113 Orlando Hernandez
162 Garrett Atkins
344 Michael Bourn
450 CHIPPER LARRY WAYNE MICKEYFICKEY JONES SHORT PRINT!!!
415 black Freddy Sanchez

MUCH BETTER. Chipper short print baby. This box is officially a winner. The rest is allowed to suck, I got Chipper. the funniest thing from the Braves vs. Dodgers game on ESPN on Friday was the drunk guy screaming LARRY! during the fifth inning or so. That's his name, don't wear it out! I'm completely distracted now... I guess I should talk about the rest of the pack... I got Freddy's card so I can get a preview of his signature. Ya know what, this is one of those times I hope Freddy doesn't bother to sign his cards and I end up with a replacement. It won't happen, but I can hope. I also pulled Michael Bourn, the bane of Mario's existance. There's also Buehrle... Helton... aw who cares. CHIPPER!

106 base cards (common, black back & SP's)
14 black backs
5 Short prints

Sticky Saturday - Box Break Edition

I'm deviating from the stickers that Fleerfan sent me to provide you with an extra special Sticky Saturday. A few weeks back, Fleerfan mentioned that the only sticker he needs from the '86 mini set was the Texas Rangers. Well I knew where I could pick up a set of '86 Fleer minis and I'm going to bust it today to quench your sticker needs and hopefully find that Rangers card he needs. Obviously since this is a factory set, we won't be looking at the cards (although I may revisit them in the future) but instead, I'll be pulling the stickers. On to the box rip!

Ok I lied, Carlton was the first card I saw in the set so he gets posted because I'm a big fan of Lefty. Now on to the stickers.

Braves! Yes! First sticker even! It doesn't look like the one from the last post though, this has stripes instead of stars. Oh well, onward!

Yankees, slightly miscut causing a weird step design on the left side. Why didn't Fleer just have uniform stripes throughout the sheet? Another mid 80's trading card mystery...

Blue Jays
Mariners
Orioles
Angels - No, I'm not posting every single sticker. I'll leave that up to Fleerfan.

Giants
Royals - Note how the horizontally oriented Giants logo barely covers two stripes while the vertical Royals logo barely fits on the sticker.

Red Sox
Tigers
Mets
A's

Rangers! We got the Rangers card Fleerfan needed! Unless he needs the one with stars and not wth stripes! We'll soon find out won't we! Why am I yelling about old stickers!

Twins
Brewers
Pirates - Three awesome 80's logos that are FAR superior to the crappy boring logos of today.

Braves - Yes! Two braves in the same box, awesome! Now I can stick one to my forehead before church tomorrow.

Well, I got the Rangers card and TWO Braves, but time will tell if it was the right Rangers card.

Ban Lifted

But no more shenanigans or it will be a two month ban next time. Go ahead, Upper Deck, try me.

At least now I can finally post all the cool stuff I've pulled in the last month.

Oh sweet bliss. I'm going to enjoy this while it lasts because this time next year Mark will be wearing a uniform with New York across the front.

Starquest Chipper uncommon card. Who would have thought I would get nostalgic over a crappy 90's Collector's choice insert? Upper Deck with the sneaky move to win me back to their side.

This card is an abomination. YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HUGGING BOBBY YOU TRAITOR

What the hell is up with this card?? Is Upper Deck really taking pointers from the artist of Gil Thorp on photo composition?

I love this card for the event it is portraying. For those who don't remember, the team the Cubs beat in order to face the Marlins and have Steve Bartman rip their souls out through their guts was none other than the Braves. Suffer you Cubbie bastards!!! SUFFER!

I decided early on that I would like to collect one relic from each of the retro styles. Every blaster I've ripped had a relic card in this style. Guuuuuh.

Wally Pipp! This is a ludicrously excessive mirror set, but pulling old timey Yankees is pretty sweet.

On the left, we have a 2008 Upper Deck O-Pee-Chee insert. On the right is the 1969 design it is patterned after. You know, I kind of like what UD did with the team name and position in the circle, but what genetic defective decided unreadable silver was appropriate for the player name? Without even putting a border around it?? That idiocy is why I'm not bothering with UD Hobby packs.

This (along with the StarQuest) is the retail only insert from Upper Deck. It's a terrible design and I thought it was an advertising filler card when I first pulled it, but what the heck, it's the Babe. With the cool 40-pound Home Run Crown perched on his head. Nice.
