Sketch Card #2 - '52 Pafko

Matt of Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius recently sent some cards. I know I haven't posted anything out of a package since probably Spring, but this is relevant to the post. Included in the package was this cloth sticker of Chippah.

Lineage gives me hives, but I really like some of the oddball crap they threw in there. Plus: CHIPPAH

Matt sent the stuff as thanks for some Packer cards and art I sent.He didn't really need to do that as he's sent a hell of a lot more stuff my way than I've sent to him, but he's just cool like dat, You may have seen some of the art in this post.

This has now been christened "My Little Cheesehead". I think I had "Pinkie Packer" in mind when I drew hastily scribbled it, but I think Matt's right on this one. There was some text on the drawing that wisely got cropped out of the scan. Pinkie gets overexited during football season.

There was one more piece of art in the package I sent. Matt is probably saving it for an Epic Post and I'm going to completely derail his blogging forever by showing it here. Sorry!

Drawn on 9/19/11
Media: #2 pencil on one of those thick decoy cards out of a pack of Gypsy Queen

Here's an actual '52 Pafko card for comparison:

1952 Topps #1 - Andy Pafko - Courtesy of CheckOutMyCards.com

Why do this? Matt is a big Andy Pafko fan. And the '52 Pafko is ridiculously expensive because it's the first card in the second Topps set. Third, if you count '48 Magic. Casual collectors think 1952 Topps is their first set, so the '52 Pafko gets the label "First Card in the First Topps Set". Yes, I'm a card snob hispter. Deal with it.

I like how it turned out, but the eyes are a little off. Andy ended up looking a little more Sad Sacky than I wanted. Ok for a second effort and I've been practicing since then. Jeez, has it really been a month since I drew this?

Bip or No Bip - Heartbroken

Finally the Bip or No Bip Finale. I didn't get Bipped in the mail today for once. That left me time to ponder just what the heck Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius was trying to do with his mondo giganto package. Did I get Bipped? Your guess is as good as mine! Here's the damage:

Here's the card on top, a 2004 Bowman Heritage card of Russ Ortiz. Back in 1955 Bowman made cards that look like television sets, now in 2010 television sets are as thin as cards. Still no rocketcars though.

Random junkwax commons, AKA Bip insulation. Matt has Bipped before, I'm sure he shall again...

A bevy of Belliards. I honestly would not mind a Belliard Bip.

Aaaaah, it's a Bipper, IT'S A BIPPER -  no wait, there's only three. A minibip. But wait!

Aaaaaah I got Tucker'd! No - dammit, three again! What the hell is Matt doing to me?! Get it over with, man! Don't taunt your prey!

Nifty! four Bowman Heritage mini cards. I love this mini set. The Big set, uuuuhhhh - kinda Ugly. What's really odd here is that all four of these guys were young upcoming stars on the braves when this set came out and now all four are off the team, with three of them clinging to the league by an infected hangnail. Oh fickle fate...

Here's some Goudeys. If Upper Deck doesn't make it, every year on the release date of 2007 Goudey I shall dress up in a bootleg unlicensed MLB jersey  and place a single red rose and a shredded pack of Yu-Gi-Oh cards on UD's grave

Aaaaand here's some more crap. No offense intended. This is crap and we all know it's crap. Crap can be fun too. Wait! What is this? COULD IT BE?

IT'S A BIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-

DANGIT

Quit messing with me Matt! I'm getting bluebips here! My paranoia combined with Heartbreaking insanity has my mind all messed up. I got minibipped again too:

Three Garbers. There's a few pairs of '86s too. So how the heck to classify this?

The Verdict:

I DON'T KNOW

I got three threes of a kind, but no straight Bip. There were several more bricks of cards in the box Matt sent so I examined them for a pattern and found this:

Three Boevers,

Terry Trio,

A UK Zane minibip,

and tres Olivas.

You know what I think? I think Matt wanted to take me out with a deer slug but didn't have the ammo so he Cheneyed me with birdshot instead. How else do you explain seven mini three card Bips in one package? However, there is Hanon's Razor to consider. "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"

BULLPUCKY.

MATT'S NOT STUPID.

HE'S A GENIUS.

SEZ SO RIGHT IN HIS BLOG TITLE.

 BIPPED.

Moar Mail - Heartbreaking surprise

I can't even call these packages from Matt trades anymore because it's been forever since I sent him anything. Matt seems to be of good cheer about it though as evident from his note:

I like Matt's packages, they're always stuffed with notes. I didn't quite understand about sending cards a person never wants though.. Who wouldn't want free cards? I looked through the package and understood. There were cards in there that this person never wanted. Matt is as wise as he is generous.

THE CARDS NO ONE COULD EVER POSSIBLY WANT:

2008 Timelines Brent Lillibridge

Nothing against the perpetual 12-year-old, but I have literally about eight of this card already. Dude's in the White Sox organization now anyway.

2008 Finest Mark Tei$eira

I'm pretty much done with Tex. I suppose I could copy Thorzul and try to get every Teixeira card in a Braves uni, but I'm just not interested. He's like the Braves version of Danny Manning to me. Blech. Ok, enough negativity.

CARDS A PERSON DEFINITELY NEEDS:

2008 Timelines Evan Longoria

One more X on that Timelines checklist is always appreciated. The pact that it's the rookie of an all-star caliber player is a bonus!

2009 Whatever the heck Upper Deck is calling this set James Parr

This is my very first A Piece Of Artifact History cards. Now thanks to Matt, I can finally review the set.

MY OFFICIAL 2009 APOH/ARTIFACTS REVIEW:

Meh. If I wanted to stare at vast expanses of marble, I'd fly to Athens and visit the Parthenon.

BACK TO THE AWESOME:

1995 Stadium Club Virtual Reality Mark Lemke

This card is awesome because not only is it a Lemmer sporting the flip up shades with full computer generated stats on the back, it also caused the song Virtual Insanity to pop up in my head. Imagine Lemke sliding around all over the place like in the video! Dodge that couch, Mark!

Awesome stuff from Matt and the cards I plan to send him are still in a pile far away from any bubble mailer. Oh well, they'll get out soon enough. In the meantime:

Junie looks on in approval. Thanks Matt!

Catching up on trades - Heartbreaking team set completers

I've actually gotten a couple of packages from Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius that I still haven't posted. So, what am I waiting for?

Matt sent a complete set of 1983 Topps Fold Outs still wrapped in the packages. Now I've got more action than my man John Woo and I've got mad hits like

Rod Carew! I've got a handful of these cards torn out of the foldees, but I think I'm going to keep this set intact and Mint In Package. I know what you're going to say, "But Dayf! you have to open up the packs! Cards are meant to be freeeee!" No they're not. It's fun to free them, but if I have something already encased in plastic be that a wrapper or a grading case or shrink wrap that would be better off staying in the plastic, then I leave it in the plastic. My factory set of 1994 Collector's Choice is happy in the package. There's no need at all to bust my graded Tim Couch rookie card out of its case. And there is no reason to disturb the pristine wrappers on these card when I can pick up a complete set of opened cards dirt cheap. They're not very good looking cards anyway, but the unopened packages have a certain appeal to them.

Another thing in the magic box Matt sent was a group of Michael Jordan Upper Deck Retrospective postcards. I'd never seen nor heard of the set before now, it looks pretty good. Too bad I like Michael Jordan about as much as I like cholera. I've found a good home for one of the cards, but if there is a Jordan, Bulls or North Caroline collector out there that wants these just ask. I can trade you them for some Hawks or if you're not picky about condition I'll pop a stamp on one and just mail it to you for free.

There were some other neat goodies in the box, but I'm saving them for later. Matt sent an extra package of goodies that did amazing, wonderful things... Behold:

The Last Two Cards I Needed For My 1970 Topps Braves Team Set

The Last Card I Needed For My 1973 Topps Braves Team Set

The Last Two Cards I Needed For My 1978 Topps Braves Team Set

The Last Card I Needed For My 1979 Topps Braves Team Set

One package, four team sets completed!!! Holy Crap Matt! My binder runneth over. Matt is extraordinarily generous. I have a surprise about to head his way one of these days. I just need to divvy it up between Matt and Darkship, who has also sent some amazing stuff in the past. Thanks guys!

My second Allen & Ginter 1/1

There are no words to describe the perfection of this card.

Thanks to Matt from Heartbreaking cards of Staggering Genius for this beaut.
