Obligatory Handegg Post

Woooo! Superb Owl day! What a great day of Football! Arsenal beat Crystal Palace two-nil! And a Falcon got elected to the Hall of Fame! Let's take a look at some Claude Humphrey cards, because the Big Game sucks worse than the halftime show!

This is the funniest thing ever

Gotta love the New York tabloids....

I personally see Brady as Anakin and Bellichick as Emperor Palpatine but that acknowledges the prequels so is probably not a good idea.

In other news, a 13-3 number 1 seeded team with home field advantage is almost universally picked as underdogs due to a guy who has rushed for less than 300 yards in the NFL.

I'm honestly surprised all the bloggers out there who are Packer fans aren't trying to get me to place a wager on a game that Green Bay is destined to win by birthright.

Four Cards, Four Teams

More card shop pickups here. Amazing how one trip to the LCS can generate 2 week's worth of posts. No bargains in this post though (a Kevin Brown rookie for a dime IS a bargain, dagnabbit!) just some cards from the local sports franchises.

Monday night's debacle not withstanding, Matty Ice is going to be the Falcons' franchise for a long time. It seems somewhat ridiculous to call myself a Falcon collector when I have dozens of cards of Chris Chandler but my Matt Ryans are in single digits. I dug through the dollar box of Falcons looking for a Ryan or two to add to the collection. While perusing through the stack I came to a realization:

I HATE PANINI'S FOOTBALL DESIGNS.

I really can't stand them at all. Ugly, ugly, ugly. Too busy, too random and the design overwhelms the picture. It's like Panini's mission statement is to emulate 1995 Fleer as much as humanly possible. I guess people must like it (or they simply discard the base and chase the hits instead) but it's not for me. Which sucks because a large percentage of Ryan cards are on Panini designs. Instead I got a football card from a baseball set where the subject is wearing a college uniform.

Panini's basketball designs I've got no problem with. Yeah, there's a lot of the same randomness going on, but it works better with the hoops. There was no way I was passing up a Crown Collection card of my favorite Hawk, Al Horford. He stayed in school, won a championship, plays hard every night, is an All-Star playing out of position, and Al has more leadership in his pinky finger than Joe Johnson and Josh Smith have put together. Al's the real deal.

I've all but given up on hockey. The local franchise has been a trainwreck from the moment they took the ice. Every last one of their big draft picks have flopped, crashed or have been squandered by crappy management. Now that the ownership troubles have been sorted out there's a very real chance that they might not even be here much longer (Winnipeg Jets take 2 perhaps?). The only reason I haven't bought a Gordie Howe sweater and jumped ship for the Red Wings is this guy right here. Evander Kane. This is my very first Evander Kane card after hunting for one for the past year. Even though the franchise is a complete mess (yes I know they are doing better this year) and might be in a different city soon Evander is the type of player I can latch on to to keep my fandom alive. Or at least help me forget about the Stephans, Heatleys and Kovalchuks....

Let's finish off with an Uggla. Wrong uniform, sure, but it will be a couple of months until he's in the right one. Besides, it's shiny and curvy. Everyone likes shiny, right? Curvy not so much.

Falcon Fever

No, really. Falcon Fever.

Saints at Falcons tonight in the biggest game of the week. Saints win, they clinch a playoff spot. Falcons win, we win the division. I've avoided posting about the Falcons due to superstition, so if the Falcons do a traditional Flop, I'm the one who did it. The Saints hit a field goal just as I typed that sentence so they are doomed. Dooooooooooomed. All because of me.

I picked up some beer, cheap chinese food and 11 packets of Panini Feetsbowl stickahs to enjoy while watching the game. Watch this space and I'll rip 'em live throughout the course of the game.

TOUCHDOOOOOOOOOWWWWNNNNN

YEAH D!!!!!

(I knew I shoulda bought more stickers)

Chauncey Davis is not in the Panini album. Jeez that was a horrible play by Brees.

Another interception by a lineman!!!!! Abraham isn't in the album either, wtf?

Yet another punt by Keonen. You can't keep giving Brees chances even if he's got the Favres right now.

HOLD 'EM D!!!!!!!

they didn't hold :(

All right Matty, it's GO time.

Bluh. Can't do nothin' on offense again.

Wait? Fumble? Nah, he's down. #$%@!

Aaaaand now the D can't stop 'em. One more first down and it's over.

And that's it. Absolutely no offense tonight. Gotta beat Carolina next week. I am a jinx. Guuuuuh.

For all my fellow Falcons sufferers  fans here's a more amusing flop to distract from tonight's flop.

Kom aa Falcons!

The Dictionary Definition of Frightening

When your team's entire season depends on one pass.

From Chris Redman.

Thank GOD for Roddy. So now the countdown finally moves from 4

to 3

And it may never move to 2 since Matt Ryan and Michael Turner are hurt. If it does, I need some help choosing the uniform for #2. Help me out here. Should I choose Matt:

Or Prime Time:

It's all academic anyway because the Falcups will likely 0-fer the rest of the schedule...

Yay, A Win

Falcons beat the slop out of the 49ers today. Now I can ditch #7 and put a 6 up in the countdown. Nice to be a third of the way to a winning season with three quarters of the season left to play. The Falcons will screw it up, though, I believe in them. Here's a pic of the card the number came from 'cause it's purdy.

This is a late '60s-early '70s Topps glossy insert. as you can see it's got lot of pretty colors and rounded corners. What you can't see is that it's a tad smaller than normal card size and it is laminated with a really glossy finish. The back is almost identical to the 1969 Topps Deckle Edge cards from 1969. Blank, with a box containing the player name, team and position, with the card number and copyright date under that. It's a nifty looking little insert.

No, I'm not showing the card for #7. You can probably figure out who it is.

Even if you're not a football fan

...you have to like the epic pic on this 1997 Topps card of Cornelius Bennett and Jesse Tuggle upending Jerry Rice.

Jerry had the last laugh as the Niners pounded the Falcons that day 39-17. Jerry, as tradition required when playing the Falcons, scored a touchdown.

NFL Opening Day

No, that thing that happened Thursday night doesn't count. Early openers are are a communist plot.

The real season opened up a few minutes ago. The Falcons and Dolphins have kicked it off. Both teams were a surprise last year and made it to the playoffs after a dismal season in '07. Now I am watching - praying - that the falcons go to the next level this year.

I'm not talking about going to the Superbowl.
I'm not talking about winning the division.
Hell, I don't even care if they make the playoffs.

JUST WIN 9 GAMES

You see, the Falcons have never had back to back winning seasons. EVER. They've been around since 1966. How is that even possible? Every time the Falcons have a great year something horrible happens next season to screw it all up. Jamal Anderson blows a knee. Michael Vick rapes a poodle. The Falcons hire Jerry Glanville. Horrible, horrible stuff. To help me feel better while waiting for the next shoe bomb to drop I'm going to keep a countdown on the blog to remind me how many games they need to avoid futility for another two years. I'll probably delete it after Matt Ryan gets abducted by aliens and they are 1-7. In the meantime, here's Bill Fralic, whose uniform provided the number 9.

That's all ya need Falcons, just get nine. My heart can't take doing this again in 2011.

Son of Sticky Saturday

A while back I found some awesome old Fleer Basketball stickers. FleerFan, the resident sticker expert, asked if I could pick him up a few stickers to help complete his collection. I obliged his request and got a package of cool old stickers in return. To celebrate the completion of Sticker Sets (and mourn my dying dream of a 2010 Panini Baseball set) I'm resurrecting Sticky Saturday to show them off over the next couple of months.

Since it's Hall of Fame Game weekend, let's start off with an old Football sticker.

Yeaaaaah Falcons! This is a pretty old cloth sticker which appears to be sticker on the front than the back. Due to the age and the cloth material some of the gum has oozed to the front making it tacky enough to stick to my scanner. I was wondering why this one was sent in a penny sleeve.

Since it's likely from the '70s it has the old school Falcons font and logo. I like the black background, very Falcony. Not sure of the year, check out the Fleer Sticker Project and do some research if you're so inclined. Early '70s, probably. I'll go out on a limb and say 1974. I absolutely love old stickers and decals like this since most of its sticky bretheren ended up getting stuck.

Here's the back. No company logo, no copyright, no nuttin. As you can see the glue's gotten icky, but the backing is containing it quite well. I'd never try to peel it off and stick it on something. I'd be afraid that sticker backing was holding back the horrors of the Necronomicon and I'd end up in an Evil Dead movie.

Klaatu... Barada... Nikto!

So Happy

Lotsa things making me happy right now.

I've been waiting for ages to see the Falcons draft like they did this year:
1 Peria Jerry Defensive Tackle
2 William Moore Safety
3 Christopher Owens Cornerback
4 Lawrence Sidbury Jr. Defensive End
5 William Middleton Cornerback
5 Garrett Reynolds Offensive Tackle
6 Spencer Adkins Outside Linebacker
7 Vance Walker Defensive Tackle
SEVEN OUT OF EIGHT PICKS ON THE DEFENSE!

THE ONLY OFFENSIVE PLAYER THEY SELECTED IS A BIG OL' LINEMAN!

LINEMEN WERE HALF THE DRAFT CLASS!

Then this article described Peria Jerry as "a rolling bucket of butcher knives" and I got happier.

I also found out that the Braves are giving everyone a free ticket for their birthday! Woo! Free tickets! Me likey free tickets. I'm so happy.

I got confirmation that this site will not go gently into that good night and will be hosted elsewhere soon. If anyone knows of good GeoCities Baseball cards sites, post a link so we can work on saving them somehow. Not letting good info get flushed down the drain makes me happy.

Also: I have made my peace with 2008 Heritage High Series. Considering Heritage is pretty much the only brand I'll even think about buying right now, that's a good thing. Letting go needless frustration makes me happy.

Finally, I've also gotten packages from Dinged Corners, Madding and Captain Canuck over the past few days and that made me happy. Unfortunately I don't have time to post them at the moment, because I'm swamped with real life stuff. That makes me happy too as I'm finally making some headway after the past couple of months. I'll post 'em ASAP and send a few packages out myself this week. Gotta share the happy.

Tony Gonzalez

I'll admit, when I first heard that the Falcons were looking into trading for Tony Gonzalez my initial reaction was "So they finally realized a young QB could use an impact tight end to throw to in the red zone? Woulda been nice if they figured that out last year before they kicked Alge Crumpler to the curb."

Then this morning I heard a rumor on the radio that it might be a big blockbuster sending off our first round pick in this weekend's draft to KC for Tony and Glenn Dorsey of all people. I had a freaking existential crisis last year because we picked Matt Ryan over Dorsey, and after being proven totally utterly wrong about Ryan they are going to go and trade for the guy I wanted in the first place?? As irrational is it sounds, I was ready to just give up football completely if my stupidity was rubbed in my face like that. I listened to my MP3 player the rest of the trip*.

Then this afternoon, I got back in the car, turned on the radio and heard that Gonzalez was a Falcon. No salt in my wounds package deal, just Tony by himself for a second round pick in 2010. Now that it's real, now that the best tight end in the league is going to be wearing black next year, now that Matt Ryan is going to have White and Turner and Gonzalez to get the ball to, my reaction has changed a bit.

yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!11

Now go out and get a big side of beef for that defense Dimitroff. I'll quit second guessing you now. Probably.

* For anyone interested the first five random tracks on the player were:
Existential Blues by T-Bone Stankus
Tequila by The Champs
Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes
Boom by Bloodhound Gang
Paranoid by Black Sabbath

I never have to buy another pack of Mayo as long as I live

I ran out to Target today to pick up last minute Valentine's stuff. It's not like you can pick up flowers a month in advance to save money. Of course I should have been going to an actual Florist but the ones by me don't sell Upper Deck. Apparently neither does Target... Wally World has had UD for a week but there's still no sign of that yellow package with Jeter's mug on it yet. Maybe Upper Deck is mad at Target because Topps got released early and they're holding back on them. I took care of my societal holiday obligation and snagged a few packs of American Heritage and two packs of Mayo. I really want to like this stuff and I thought I'd give it one more shot. I'm not sure if the Topps Gremlins put these packs in my path to try to win me over or the Upper Deck Spies put them there to ensure I'd never buy a pack of them again. You see, in those two packs I got the one card I really, really wanted other than the Matt Ryan rookie:

The Falcons Super Bowl card. See folks, they were actually there. This is proof. I wasn't dreaming. IT WAS REAL. Now if I could just go back in time and hold Eugene Robinson in his hotel room at gunpoint until kickoff. Of course Upper Deck used the new logo insead of the old logo, but I ain't complaining. The old logo was kinda dorky looking to be honest.

The other pack had two mini cards in it including:

Yep, finally got my ship. Now I have the Ryan, The Falcons cards and a random boat. What the heck else could I possibly want? Well other than the McLovin autograph THAT TOPPS TEASED ME WITH. I also got this card in the pack with two minis to cap the whole set off:

Sir Arthur. Sherlock Holmes' daddy. I got the Complete Sherlock Holmes book for Christmas when I was a kid and I read the hell out of that book. I still try to catch the Jeremy Brett shows on Bravo or A&E or wherever the hell channel they're on now at 3 in the morning when I can find them. Plus: I want that mustache. I want to reach into that card, rip it off his face and glue it on mine. I will wear Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's handlebars with pride.

So I got a couple packs and got exactly what I wanted. What's the use of buying more packs? I can't beat those two unless I got a coin card or some such nonsense, which will never happen anyway. Ah, those sneaky Upper Deck spies. they're more clever about their anti-Topps espionage than I imagined. Hey folks, how about planting some UD blasters in Target next time though, huh?

PLAYOFFS... and Bowman

Falcons Vs. Cardinals.

Seriously, is there a more ridiculous playoff matchup ever? The team that has won exactly one playoff game since 1947 versus the one who has never had back to back winning seasons? I honestly have no idea who wins this game, The Falcons look good but the game is in Arizona. I guess we'll find out in about 15 minutes. To get me through the game I picked up a couple of packs of Bowman with Matt Ryan on the wrapper. I'm nit a big fan of Bowman this year, but I'm not sure if a Falcon has ever been the Poster Child for a football set before. I'll open one pack now and one at halftime.

103 Jason Witten
24 Matt Schaub
12 Derek Anderson

The imploding borders are kind of strange. They sort of remind me of 1998 Topps football, just with black borders instead of gold. The backs are ok, half the card is devoted to a scouting report which cuts the stats to one year and a career line. It's a bit odd to see the top and bottom borders white and the side borders black. I'm not sure why they did that. Pretty meh player selection among the vets. I guess Matt Shaub's trade to the Texans ended up getting the Falcons Matt Ryan in a roundabout way.

217 Jermichael Finley
210 Andre Caldwell
212 Eddie Royal
128 Justin King

Three vets, four rookies. I don't know who any of these people are and I don't feel like looking any of them up. I'm not sure how many rookies are in this set, probably too many. The design is exactly the same as the veteral cards, just with the typical Bowman motif of blue for the rookies instead of the red.

173 Gold Dennis Dixon

Here's the useless one per pack super thick gold parallel. I've heard of Dennis Dixon at least. I'm pretty sure there's a Duck fan out there who wants this card, I'll put it aside for him.

BC10 Antwaun Molden
BC3 Gosder Cherilus
BC48 Steve Johnson

I got three Chrome cards for some reason. A lucky accident or is Topps putting a bonus in the pack to make up for the no name rookies? I don't know who any of these people are and the game is about to start. Chris Collinsworth was just talking abotu Anquan Boldin as I was looking at Antwaun Molden's card. A bad omen for the Falcons? Maybe Schaub will counter the indirect Cardinals mojo. The kickoff is about to happen, I'll rip the second pack at halftime.

HALFTIME: Falcons 17, Cardinals 14

Considering the Falcons were awful in the first half, the'yr doing pretty good. No way Matt Ryan is a rookie. Sammy Baugh switched bodies with him like in Heaven Can Wait or something. Let's open that second pack. Igot this one from Target and the first from Wal-Mart. For unknown reasons, the Wal-Mart wrapper is mylar and the Target wrapper is white plastic. I've noticed that most wrappers at Target are like this, but I don't know why that is.

34 Marshawn Lynch
52 Michael Turner

Yes! Michael Turner! It's a sign, I tell ya! A sign! Turner's going to go off in the second half, just you wait. Only two vets in this pack, but they're better than the ones in the first pack. Since Manning won the MVP and Turner came in second, does that mean Turner is the NFC's MVP? I'm going to count it. MVP! MVP!

264 Terrell Thomas
273 Xavier Oman
169 Chad Henne
209 Jerome Simpson
120 Antwaun Molden

Xavier Oman is a great Scrabble name. You can always count for great names in football. Chad Henne was the guy I wanted The Falcons to pick in the second round after they picked up Dorsey instead of Ryan. Did I mention that I'm a dumbass? I've pulled two or three Simpson cards in abtou 10 packs of Masterpieces. Which is a big reason why I haven't bought any more Masterpieces. I got another Molden card, hooray.

161 Gold Brett Swan

AW CRAP. Falcons coughed it up and gave up a TD. #$%^!!

BC55 Pierre Garcon
BC52 Matt Slater

Two more rookies I know nothing about. Pierre Garcon is an interesting name at least. There's a checklist card in here too. it shows the Chrome cards mostly and it really pisses me off. All the good rookies are only found as a refractor parallel, while the regular Chrome has players I've never heard of. Great, so two cards in every pack are going to be nobodies guaranteed. The odds on an autograph in a retail pack is 1:395 packs. Nice! I guess Topps hamstrung this set so suckers would have to buy Bowman Chrome in order to get Chrome versions of all the decent rookie cards. Meh. This is the last pack of this that I buy.

Ok, let's see if the Falcons can come back again in this game...

FINAL: Cardinals 30, Falcons 24

Ugh. Well that sucked. I guess they didn't do too badly considering they were completely awful during the 1st and 3rd quarters. I guess we'll see if they can finally get back to back winning seasons in 2009. I'm not holding my breath.

So...... How 'bout them Hawks?
