WORLD WAR MONKEY

I've been following the blog Ephemera for a long time, and not just because they interviewed me a while back. I like neat old papery stuff. I saw this link pop up on my RSS feed and clicked.

FROM THAT VERY MOMENT MY LIFE CHANGED FOREVER

For this was not just any post, this was a post showcasing a trading card set.

ABOUT MONKEYS. MONKEY GENERALS. THAT FOUGHT IN MONKEYLAND WORLD WAR ONE. FEATURED ON FAUX EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY TOBACCO CARDS. ONE OF THE MONKEYS IS NAMED PRINCE BRUNO VON SNIFFENFINGER. JUMPIN JESUS ON A POGO STICK HOW FREAKIN COOL IS THAT.

tHE SET IS A CREAT- *ahem* The set is a creation of illustrator Chet Phillips who has a pretty neat style. Gotta love the Tikis. Chet sent Ephemera a set to review and I was blown away. Feckin monkey general tobacco cards!!! But I've gone over that already... I clicked on Chet's site and found that he was selling sets on Etsy. I wasn't too familiar with Etsy, but basically it's an online shopping mall for handmade items. I clicked to look at the set, but figured that it's handmade art and stuff so it will probably cost more than I could afford. I clicked and saw that I could have my very own MONKEY FREAKIN GENERAL set for the low, low price of 5 smackers. Five bucks! Plus shipping! REASONABLE shipping, not EBay ripoff shipping! For bellicose turn of the century simians!

I had to get them.

I couldn't not get them.

It was like when I stumbled upon the near set of Dinosaur Attacks at Goodwill that one time. I was so dumbfounded that the Good Lord in his wisdom and mercy would place something so precious and wonderful in my path. It would be an affront to all that is good and cardworthy not to purchase them. So I did.

Oh dear Lord, that was a pain in the ass.

First I had to register for Etsy, with was a breeze. I was in, had my login and everything so I clicked to purchase. Then: THE HORROR.

PayPal.

I friggin HATE PayPal. I logged in tried to pay and #BZZZZT# my old credit card was in there. I tried to change it and #BZZZZT# this card is on file and cannot be used for security reasons. Of COURSE it's on file! It's my card! I used it last time! So now I'm getting panicky until I realized I could bypass PayPal altogether and use my credit card. So I did. #BZZZZT# You have a PayPal login, do you want to use PayPal?

NOIDONTWANTTOUSESTINKINPAYPAL! PAYPAL IS THE DEVIL! I WILL NEVER AGAIN USE PAYPAL AS LONG AS I LIVE! IF PAYPAL INFILTRATES THE FEDERAL RESERVE AND MAKES PAYPAL THE ONE AND ONLY METHOD OF PAYMENT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD AND YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE PAYPAL MARK OF THE BEAST TATTOOED ON YOUR FOREHEAD TO FUNCTION IN CIVILIZED SOCIETY I WILL GO COMPLETELY OFF THE GRID LIVE OFF OF GRUBS AND BERRIES AND FORM AN UNDERGROUND REBELLION TO OVERTHROW THE EVIL THAT IS PAYFREAKINGPAL!!!!! YOU WON'T LET ME USE MY OWN GODDAMN CREDIT CARD ANYWAY SO IT'S KIND OF IMPOSSIBLE TO USE PAYPAL AT THE MOMENT!
AAAAAAHHHHH! I JUST WANNA BUY MONKEYCARDS!

(I sure am yelly today)

So, no, I didn't use PayPal (whew) and the order appears to have gone through. Once I have warlord monkeys in my hands it will all have been worth it. Once they arrive I'll show off my favorite monkey. In the meantime you can check out prints of the monkeys in question, or if monkeys aren't your thing (although I can't see why anyone wouldn't like monkeys) there's also plenty of other stuff to look through like this Doggie and Kitty Lucha Libre Wrestling set.

But for me, it's all about the monkeys.

FIGHTIN' MONKEYS!

YYYEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

WHAT IS THIS DEMONRY part 2

It's snowing.

In Georgia.

It's not allowed to snow in Georgia.

Especially since I didn't see the local news do their annual SNOWDEATHWATCH 2009 - CRISIS IN ATLANTA - BUY ALL THE MILK AND BREAD YOU CAN POSSIBLY CARRY AND WATCH CHANNEL 2 ACTION NEWS NOW OR YOU'RE ALL DOOOOOOOOOOMED

Now I have a half a gallon of milk, some stale hot dog buns and I'm watching a Spring Training game on MLB network. So now I'm doooomed. Thanks Local News Channel.

In two months I'm going to be sweltering in 99 degree lows with 120% humidity, so Jack Frost needs to let me enjoy some mild weather for a few more weeks. Not this Snow/Rain (snain?) slushy monstrosity.

The worst part is I had an awesome 1991 Bowman football playoff card where the teams were playing in the snow all scanned and posted and ready to go for the inevitable "ZOMG SNOW" post and I looked for an hour and can't find the buggery bugger.

Damn snow.

UPDATE: Found it!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow....

Heartbreaking trade

Here's the second of four packages that came my way on Monday. This one's from Matt, the proprietor of Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius. I sent him some Royals, some stuff off his want list and that Bo Jackson Mint 10 thing I pulled out of that Fairfield box, he sent me a few things off my own list, some Bravos and an underwear soiler. You'll see what I mean. Since I buggered up already by posting this too soon, I'll just cut to the chase:

2 2008 Allen & Ginter SPs

Hochevar and Placido Polanco. As you can see it pained him greatly to send ol' Luke here being a rabid Royals fan and such. There's a strange story behind that too, I had initially pulled no less than THREE Hochevar cards out of A&G packs. So why is it on my want list? I've been sending off packages filling out want lists for a couple of months now (something I'll be working on again as soon as I'm done with this post) and I came across someone's list where the Hochevar card was one of the last ones they needed. I thought, "no problem, I got Lukes out my wazoo" before realizing I had already traded the other two. I can't just leave someone hanging with one card laft on their want list so I pulled it out of my binder thinking I had done a good deed. Turns out I wrenched this one out of the hands of a true fan. And now I have one card left for the set.

2 2007 Topps Heritage

This here insert and Brandon Inge to be specific. I'm slooooooooowly chipping away at this set.

9 2008 Topps Heritage

Do you really want to know which ones? Really? Well ok then... Girardi Reynolds Hardy Hawpe Morris Gonzalez Molina Halladay Hoffman.

4 A&G Minis

Canya believe I got two Bulgarias on the same day? If anyone needs it, just let me know... Now Chipper I'll take two of any day.

Some Braves Just For Fun

These are certainly some fun Braves all right! Here's a detailed list of the fun:

2007 Chrome Andruw Jones Gold Glove Xfractor
2008 Chrome Brian McCann Xfractor
2008 Chrome Gregor Blanco RC Xfractor
2008 Moments & Milestones Gary Sheffield #25/25
2008 Moments & Milestones John Smoltz #15/25
2008 Opening Day Clint Sammons #0581/2199
2008 Bowman Jonathan Venters Orange #163/250

Topps changed their Xfractor formula this year did you know that? The fracts are larger and have diagonal lines going through them. Bowman Orange cards just look awesome to me for some reason. I mean, they're hideous, but an awesome hideous. Numbered cards are numbered cards. For what it's worth, I find Moments & Milestones cards numbered to 25 to be infinitely easier to find than Opening Bay cards numbered to 2199. And boy are those Opening Day white bordered card hideous. Non-awesome of course. I'm feeling mighty good about Sammons being McCann's backup next year though so I'll deal with the fugly.

There was one more card in the package, one in a magloader. This was my reaction in real time.

What what WHAAAAAAT?

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

2008 Bowman Chrome Jason Heyward AU #306/500

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
HHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I scream like a little girl whenever I get a Jason Heyward card. Yes, shorts were sharted. Pyewped, even. Matt must read the blog to know that I've been lusting in my heart for a Heyward Auto. So to Matt I say

thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou

and at least one third of the Royals cards I find will be coming your way from now on. What can I say, I know a lot of Royals fans.
