2010 Heritage Blaster League Prizes

I'm going to keep a running list of prizes for the Blaster League here. There's at least 16 contestants so I think the top 5 will get their choice of the goodies and the complete loser who managed to shoot the moon and come in dead last will get the stuff the winners didn't want.

Hey Punk Rock Paint, send me an e-mail with a pic of what you're pledging so the eventual winners can choose their prizes.

Ok, enough of that, here's the swag. I'll add prizes here and there as I post the results.

Heritage Blaster League - About Damn Time

The Heritage Blaster League final results are nearing completion. Only about eight months after we started, pretty quick, I'd say! Since I a) am not quite finished and b) need something to post to get me through the holidays I'm going to post 1 team result per day with their ante prize to make it all suspenseful and stuff. Since AdamE sent me an excel template that made the calculations slightly easier, I'm posting his results and ante tonight.

Here are (I think) all the contestants in the prize league:

AdamE - Thoughts and Sox
Thorzul - Thorzul Will Rule
Mmosley - Stats on the Back
Ernest of Canada
Don - Tiger Sportscards
Ike - Ike's Cards
McCann Can Triple - Rookie Card Collector
Madding - Cards on Cards
HamRamRobTown - HamRamRobTown
Play at the Plate - Play at the Plate
Punk Rock Paint - Punk Rock Paint
DogFacedGremlin - The Real DFG
Cardsplitter - The Call of Cardboard
Zpop - Occasional Baseball Card Blog
MattF - Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius
Me

I need to dig through the large pile of prizes (some are still in the bubble mailer) and confirm that everyone on this list has anted and whether or not any of these fellers who were playign for fun decided to send in an ante after all. That's another reason why I'm doing one post per team, so I can coordinate the prizes and teams. If you feel like you have been wrongly left out yell at me in the comments and send me some hate mail until I fix things up.

These guys played for fun, I'll calculate your totals after I get the prize league sorted out:

Jeffrey Wolfe
CynicalBuddha
Lake Effect Cards
Chris Mays
ZMan
Jay
Wax Wombat
DavidJ
Tunguska
Chris L.
Phungo

AdamE's up tonight, good luck ev'rbody...

1960 Topps Football

Set size: 132
Short printed High Series: None
Card Size: Standard 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"
Corrected Errors and Variations: none
Best card: Johnny Unitas
Key Rookies: Forrest Gregg
Subsets: Team cards (with set checklist on back)
Gimmick: Coin rub comic strip
Back ink colors: Green
League: NFL
Team Logos? No
Night Owl Style Nickname: The "'57 Style" set
Teams included in the set: Baltimore Colts, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins (Italics indicates first appearance for the team in a Topps set)
Why I chose this card: Bob looks pretty happy as he elbows the two people standing beside him in the face.

One man's 'boring' is another man's 'elegant'. I'll just call it 'basic'. This is one of the most straightforward sets you'll find. A large photo adorned only with an overstuffed football containing the name and team makes up the front. A one-color back dominated by a scratch-off cartoon that takes up over half the card. A set that fits on one 132-card sheet with no variations or corrected errors. A card number that is completely readable. Even the checklist is brutally efficient as all teams are grouped together in a Fleer-like fashion. A simple, no-frills, solid workhorse of a set. This is the Volkswagen Beetle of football card sets.

If you're unsure why I chose Johnny Unitas over Jim Brown for the best card in the set, you need to read your copy of The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book again. This set has a special place in my heart because I managed to buy a brick of over 40 cards from the set dirt cheap when I was a kid. I had an idea that I could actually complete the set one day since the star cards were not too pricey and there were no really big name rookies in the set. That's probably true still today, knock out Johnny U and Jimmy B and the rest is just perseverance. There are a ton of errors in the set including misspelled names, mixed up positions and reverse negatives but none of them were ever corrected so there's no variations to chase. Cowboys fans get to see their team in a Topps set for the very first time in 1960. Cardinals fans get to see their team's cards debut in a city they likely don't care about anyway, St. Louis Fans are more interested in their Rams (who got smoked by Matty Ice this afternoon). Ha!

Virtual 1982 Topps Sticker Album - Page 6

Man, it's been a long time since I did one of these, eh? I think my long absence ran off all the rabble, time to get back in the swing of things. Sticker album page, ahoy!

Shoot, I should have saved the ahoy schtick for the Mariners. This is the Astros so... 3! 2! 1! sticker page BLAST OFF!

The ghostly figure on this page is a no-brainer. It's Nolan. I have solid proof, just wait. I just noticed how annoying it is that Topps only list the the first half and second half records on the page. I actually had to use my brain to figure out that the 'Stros went 61-49 in 1981. I suck at even the simplest math so this was no small feat for me. Speaking of numbers, check out the home run stats. The Astros hit 45 home runs all year. Ok, so it was a strike year. That's still 45 home runs in 110 games. Forty-five!!!!! Middle infielders hit more than that themselves nowadays! It was hard to hit home runs in the '80s! Someone find a BBWAA member and beat them over the head with this fact before they fill out their Hall ballot please.

~~~~~ JOY OF A COMPLETED PAGE ~~~~~~
Isn't that purty? I like it when things work out like this. If you want proof that shadowman is none other than Nolan Ryan, compare the gloves on the page and on the sticker. They're identical. In fact I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the sticker photo was taken milliseconds after the background photo. Just look at the fence in the background. I am also amused by how the page is laid out so that there is a white-hot ball of SuperStardom in the top right corner which drops off precipitously the further down the page you get until you hit the black hole of Bob Knepper. Ok, so Bob wasn't all that bad a pitcher. I'm just mad that Topps picked him over Don Sutton or Joe Niekro for a sticker subject. Dangit, I want a sticker of the Hall of Fame Perm, not Bob and his amazing mustache. And no, Don's not on the Milwaukee page, he got traded mid-season.
Everybody wants my Cookie part 2
I have to admit, the George Scott make me think about it for a moment...
Either Retail Obak is Loaded...
Or I'm the luckiest bastard on the planet.
I've bought 20 packs of retail Obak. From three different Targets. For some reason I appear to be the only person in Georgia who likes Obak so there's always a mostly full box awaiting me. In those 20 packs I have pulled this:
Yes, five Heywards. Including all four possible variations.
Like I said, either I'm lucky or they're loaded. Loaded with Heyward minis at least. I have yet to pull a short print, variation, parallel or autograph from a retail pack. Of course I DON'T FREAKING CARE I GOTS HEYWARDZ!!!1
A quick question
This here is the card that caused a big kerfuffle over the summer.
First it was Transmogrifier only, then you could also get it in a factory set, finally Topps relented to put it in the Updates set. After all that, most of us just didn't care.
However, the Update set finally arrived a while back and we're all starting to pull the damnable things. I have been unfortunate enough to pull two, one in a hobby pack and another in the first retail rack I saw. My question:
Is this thing short printed? Normal printed? Double printed?
I suppose I could just go to BaseballCardPedia and find out for myself, but that would be too easy. Also it would ruin the premise of this post, and lord knows I've had enough problems posting lately. I ask mainly because I a) pulled two of those abominations and b) both times they were the last card before the inserts popped up. That ethereal region between worthless base and mega mojo often harbors such rare beasts such as variations, parallels or just plain short prints.I mean, if it was the second or fifth card in the pack, then sure, just a crummy base card. When it hangs around the high-class part of town it makes me wonder. It's probably just a base card with an insert card price tag. Besides, Topps most likely gimmicked the gimmick with a pie in the face or the ghostly head of Shirley Hemphill peering over Stevie's shoulder for super gimmick shenanigans. Can't have too much of a good bad thing!
Anybody want my dupe? It's got a ding in the corner and I left it in my car which is currently at the shop, but if you really want a dinged quasi-rookie card of a pitcher with a bum arm I'll PWE it to you once I get my car back.
UGGGGGGG
You know what the best part of this trade is?
We don't have to face the sonuvabitch anymore.
Career splits against the Braves:
.287/.343/.558 BA/OBP/SLG for a .900 OPS
23 homers, most against any team.
62 RBIs, most against any team.
25 doubles, tied with the Natsies for most against any team.
Dude killed us with the bat, now he can kill us with his glove (kidding).
We needed a RH power hitter to hit cleanup, Wren gets us a RH power hitter to hit cleanup.
Good job, Frankie!
So long Omah, we hardly knew ye....
A few cards from the Update Series
I was still in the middle of my exile/sabbatical/mourning/ragequit when Topps 2010 Baseball Update Series Major League Baseball The Exclusive Trading Card All Rights Reserved Patent Pending No Pepper Games came out. As such, I have mercifully avoided all the inevitable MOJO! and WEAKSAUCE! and GIMMICK!!! posts so I'm going into this set with no prejudice or expectations. Basically I saw the preview images from Topps and some of the preliminary checklist. Of course this is just Traded, er, Updates & Highlights, um, Updates, uhh, oh screw it Topps Series Three, so I pretty much know what I'm getting into. A few rookies, a few players on their new teams, a whole slopload of subsets and more of the same inserts from the first two series so you end up with a bunch more of the ones you don't want and you're that much farther from completing the sets you do. Oh, and there's the obligatory auto/relic/manupatch detritus along with some other sketchy big money hits. Basic Topps, ho hum I'm so excited I could slit my wrists.
Even with the crushing ennui I feel towards Topps' flagship lately, I finally picked up a few packs. I'll want these sets in a couple of years even though they don't interest me a whit right now. The local card shop* has packs priced better than Target right now (5 hobby packs for $8 compared to 4 retail for the same price) so I'm going to get my Topps fix there until prices get jacked up. If they get jacked up. No more Strassboorg hype, remember.
My first five packs were actually fairly decent, surprisingly enough. Here's one card from each pack, mainly because I can't be arsed to post the whole thing anymore.
Pack 1 - Dave Winfield & Jason Heyward Legendary Lineage
There was one card I really really wanted from this set when I first saw the sell sheet. Nailed it in one. Every pack I purchase after this one is a colossal waste.
Pack 2 - 1952 Topps Eddie Mathews Yo Momma card
No ones' momma threw this card out because Sy Berger chucked 'em all into the river before they could get to them. Nowadays all those unsold high series packs would be shoved into repack boxes instead. Think about that the next time you complain about the six 2007 Topps Series Two packs you get in your next "Find The '52 High Series!!!" box. If I manage to pull the original back version of this card I'm putting it in with my 1952 Team set and crossing one more card off my list.
Pack 3 - Rick Ankiel
Ok, his batting average with the Braves was .210 (compared to a strikeout average of .353!) but the guy sure can play defense. The Home Run makes up for all the whiffs. I initially thought I might have been at the game when this picture was taken but the visitors' uniforms are all wrong. (those are the Mets, right?)
Pack 4 - Merry Stras-Mas Motherfu----
The front of this card makes me nauseous (Seriously, Merry Stras-mas? Blearrgh), but the back is interesting. First card in the set? #661. That's right Topps, YOU DON'T FCUK WITH THE BASE SET, BITCHES. Let's see how long it takes them to forget this rule. I put the over/under at about a month and a half ago.
In other news the numbering convention US-1 to US-330 is just as unwieldy as UH-1 to UH-330. It is slightly more patriotic, however. Go back to T1 to T132 or even better 661-990. All those extra numbers and dashes just put more strain on set collators' eyes. Oh wait, I'm telling the marketing geniuses who have managed to shrink their market to about 10% of what it was 20 years ago how to run their business. Never mind, you guys got this. Carry on.
Pack 5 - Ty Cobb Vintage Legend - 1971 Topps
Is it just me or is Topps just having fun doing the same custom card stuff we do all the time with this set? While there are some odd ducks in this set (see: Christy Mathewson in a 1997 Topps design with a blue border design) this one is just about perfect. '71 Topps design, check. Sweet facsimile auto, check. Cool old timey ads in the background, check. The Georgia Peach with a bat in his hand and hatred in his soul, check. Topps even got the fonts right on this card.
I have to say I like the Update set more than I thought I would. I'm still pretty apathetic towards this whole 'card' thing right now though. How many Heywards do I have to chase, again?
*I'm not using the increasingly popular LCS acronym. Nosir, I don't like it. Still gonna use blogosphere though no matter how much everyone else in the blogosphere doesn't like the term.
Thanks, Hawks!
My son went to his first NBA game tonight.
It will be a miracle if he ever wants to watch another NBA game as long as he lives.
Seriously, that was the worst basketball performance I've ever seen and I had Georgia Bulldogs season tickets for years.
Not even gonna post a picture, just gonna go to bed.
(On the bright side, he was amazed by Phillips Arena, had lots of fun booing and got a mini basketball at the gift shop on the way out. That combined with a decent performance by Al Horford made it an enjoyable evening despite the Hawks inexplicably playing like it was the Shareef Abdur-Rahim era)
Congrats Giants
For a little perspective, the last time the San Francisco New York Giants Won a World Series was the year this card of their series foe was made.
For a little more perspective, the Washington Senators that would move to Texas to become the Rangers weren't actually these Senators. These guys moved to Minnesota. the Ranger Senators didn't even exist until 1961.
Don't feel too bad Rangers fans, you've gotten off the "never been to a World Series" schnide and Nolan is running the show now. Giants fans should get out and party with Lincy and The Machine. AFTER you go vote that is....
One card I didn't expect to bring home from the card show
But honestly, how could I pass this up?
With discounts and whatnot, it ended up costing me about a buck if anyone cares.
(It's not even the best League Leader card I found either)
A few links before the card show
Last reminder:
Card show today and tomorrow in Atlanta.
One dealer, all vintage stuff, don't come looking for anything released after Nixon was president.
It's at the Courtyard Marriott on Delk Road in Marietta. Right off the exit, can't miss it.
I'll be there at noonish probably with my kid in tow if you want me to autograph your 1978 Topps Dave Campbell card or need to punch me in the face or something. Fat guy drooling on the bargain box, can't miss me.
Now for some linkage. First, a contest:
GA Mindset is giving away a box of Topps Chrome. Go clicky and jump through the necessary hoops for a chance to get some shiny.
Now the bloggage:
The Infinite Baseball Card Set is up to 56 gorgeous looking cards. Only infinity left to go!
Who Made The Grade is dedicated to graded vintage cards. No matter how you feel about grading, seeing a near mint 1971 Topps card is a joy.
Wax Pack Time Machine - any blog posting a Gordie Howe relic card is off to a good start.
Smed's Baseball Card Blog - not sure if I can top his blog description: "Yet still another baseball card blog"
Here's a few other links that aren't blogs:
Collecting Ichiro isn't a blog per se, but it is a collection of Geocities-inspired obsessive genius.
Baseballcarddatabase.com - a database of various cardage and memorabilia, as well as the owner of every (YourTeamName)cards.com address. I'll describe it as my uncle described by beard in high school: "sparse, but vigorous".
Finally, I don't do ads anytime ever period stop contacting me. But in honor of Chris Harris I'll plug this.
Little Green Postcard
Sports Memories show this weekend at I-75 and Delk at the Courtyard Marriott. You'll probably see me there on Saturday assuming I don't try to take a long lunch break on Friday to grab some cardage. If you like Vintage goodies, this is the show to go to. If you have any questions on how to get there, just leave me a comment. I'll check my e-mail just this once to help out fellow vintage lovers.
The show is one dealer, Sports Memories of Oklahoma. There will be no other dealers at the show. Inventory is basically mid-70s cards and earlier, going back to the Tobacco issues of the early 1900s. Click here for a good overview of the kind of stuff they have. No recent memorabilia or autograph cards. If you want that, go north a few exits to Champion Sports Cards or up GA-400 to Atlanta Sports Cards.
Since the World Series starts tonight and I'm still on my posting hiatus, I'll quickly go over my Series thoughts.
1) I am ashamed to admit that I have caught myself rooting for Brian Wilson and The Machine.
2) I am utterly dismayed that Jeff Francoeur has managed to derp himself into a World Series.
If my hypothesis that the Baseball Gods are just messing with me right now is correct, then you should bet the farm on the Rangers. Texas in 6.
Running off to sulk again, I'll be back eventually.
Oh yeah, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
All over
A season ends where the Braves exceeded just about every expectation, overcame losing a Hall of Famer, an All-Star and half the rotation, somehow managed to hold onto a playoff spot, then lost another Hall of Famer in the playoffs. They still were within one run of the Giants every game in the playoffs even though their infield was completely different from what they started the season with and had to field a rookie at second base, right field and closer.
Yet still somehow, this team and its fans are losers and a disgrace, who have some 'splainin to do.
Screw y'all haters.
The season is over and I'm taking a break. I'll be back eventually.
10x10x10 #10 for 10/10/10
BEHOLD....
1000 Chipper Jones cards.
You knew I had to do something to celebrate binary 42 day.
SOON.... One oddball Chippah from each stack that I don't think I've shown off on this blog before.
2001 Donruss Bobble Head Thingy
No the price tag isn't stuck to the card. This was included as a box topper for some bullcrap Donruss product no one cares about and was inside its own little wrapper. Why the shop owner stuck the price tag on the wrapper instead of the toploader I have no idea.
Also a boxtopper in that Donruss junk? An actual bobblehead. One that looks nothing like the actual player. You can get your own bobblehead in a box of Donruss Class of 2001 for just 130 smackers! Or not, up to you... at least the card is serial numbered to only 2000!
No time for commentary on the rest, but here's the other promised oddballs.
Virtual 1982 Topps Sticker Album - Page 5
PLAYOFF EDITION!
I'm gonna skip around a bit and show off the playoff teams out of my '82 Topps sticker album over the next week or so. Actually, this page is still in order as it is right after the Cubs who were shown last. The Reds were one of my least favorite teams growing up mainly because they beat up my Braves so often in the NL West. Now that we are both in different divisions I can appreciate them again. In fact, if the Braves can't go all the way, I'm rooting for the Reds to come out of the NL. By making this statement, I have all but assured a Giants/Phillies NLCS. Contact your bookies quickly.
As for the background image shadow person, that's gotta be Tom Seaver, right? Even with the effed up face? It sure ain't Mario Soto. Pretty much the Reds' entire pitching staff was righties with the exception of Joe Price, so I suppose it could be Frank Pastore, but why? Gotta stick with Tom here.
(heh heh, get it, stick with Tom, I made a funny)
Tom got stuck along with everyone besides Johnny Bench. I am not unhappy with this turn of events as I am far more likely to come across a stray Johnny Bench sticker in my travels instead of say, a Ron Oester. Tom Seaver is looking upon his image in the background wondering what they did to his poor face. The scan got cut off at the side as did the Concepcion sticker. I didn't realize how badly cut it was until I saw it on the page. That's like, serious Topps206 mini miscut right there. My favorite sticker on the page is George Foster, underrated slugger. We really do need to found a Hall of Very Good just so guys like George, Al Rosen and Bobby Grich can finally be honored. They're more interesting than some of the bums in the 'proper' Hall anyway.
Contests
Linking to some contests today because 1) Too busy for anything else 2) I honestly don't give a crap anymore. My time off didn't so much recharge me as bring my posting inertia to a screeching halt. Go win something.
The Great Orioles Autograph Project is holding a Playoff Bracket contest. Hint: According to all media outlets the correct answer is "Phillies beat all comers just by giving them a mean look". Bracket accordingly.
Can't Have Too Many Cards is obfuscating his burning desire to post pictures of Don Pardo with a contest. Pick Hackenbush out of the school photo.
My pick:
Finally Thorzul is holding his third annual Nightmares on Cardboard custom card contest. This year, he is not limiting the contest to horror movies apparently, it just needs to be on a design from 1970-1990. So as long as your naked furry artwork of a transvestite midget cowboy is shooped into a 1981 Topps design, you're all good.
Edit: Why didn't any of you slackers tell me I forgot to link Thorzul's contest??
I was going to announce the winner of my Obak contest from 40 years ago, but I ran out of time is morning. No one's really been asking for the results anyway. I'll do it tonight if anyone still cares.
ALSO: I have to start totaling up points for the Heritage Blaster Fantasy League, so you can forget abut more posts until that's done.
Man, this is a depressing post, isn't it!
LATE ENTRY: Spankee has his own Playoffs Contest over at My Cardboard Mistress.
Playoffs?
