October Card Show - Unknown Power

I'm a little frazzled after today but I gotta post something. I have 20 minutes to ensure that my post total for November is an even number. Yes, this is important. No I don't know why, it just is. Yes, I've been reading Thomas Pyncheon. Fnord. Wait, wrong book. I'll read that one next. Ok, so I'm a little bit nutty right now, who isn't? Besides, Thorzul is doing card show posts and I have to swipe a post idea from 'zul or the Night Owl at least once a week. It's in the contract. I'm not interested in a big huge post though, so here's a card thing I got out of that weirdo dollar bin. I have no freaking clue what it is.

Here's a black & white 9" by 6 1/4" photo of Indians outfielder Vic Power. The stock is thin and glossy, the back is blank save a couple of spots of paper loss due to the removal of some old looking tape. No idea what this is. Team issue? Promo? Regional set? I haven't the foggiest. Vic played for the Tribe from '58 to '61 so there's about a 5 year window of when this could have been produced. I'm not interested in baseball card detectivery right now though. I wanna listen to some trance, draw some poniez and drink my vodka sour. I got this card thing for three reasons: Vic Power is cool, the item looked cool, I know at least three bloggers out there who would probably like it. Can anyone identify it? If you're one of the three I was thinking of, name that thing and it's yours.

Sketch Card #8 - Mike Moustachas

I am compelled to begin this post with the first animated gif I've found that even comes close to the brilliance of Italian Spiderman:

I mean, it's not quite there, but it's damn close. I just had to share that. Now, on with the sketches.

Eric at Manupatches and Mustaches has created a Mustache Card FrankenSet. As someone with a fondness for manly facial hair and as the person who originated the concept of the FrankenSet once I had blatantly stolen the idea from Ben Henry's The 792, this was highly relevant to my interests. I found a pile of mustaches he needed for the set and wondered what to do for a sketch card.

Dude's a royals fan... and likes mustaches. Hmm.. Who's big on the Royals. George Brett. No mustache. Zack Grienke? Wait, he got traded. Jeff Franceouoeueoeuor? Nope. Oh wait, Mike Moustakas was like a #1 pick or something. And Moustakas is spelled very similarly to mustache...

Dammit, he's got a soul patch but no mustache. Well, other than that unshaven peach fuzz. I'll handle this. We can rebuild that mustache. We have the technology. Here's the back:

Now, witchcraft. And penny sleeves. And a Sharpie.

Thank goodness Eric scanned all of them in his post on the cards, that saves me a hell of a lot of time. Here's a card of the most famous mustache in baseball just so you can get a taste of the finished product.

Ha! Ha! The style is no longer blank! That's ingenuity! And sloppy handwriting!

This sketch card/conceptual art project was such a hit it made the Month in Review list for October on a blog I'm not sure is in my Daily Reading list or not. Hey! There's over 400 blogs on that thing! You try keeping up with them all! Yes, Month in Review for October. I'm a little behind in posting these things and I just drew another sketch card today. I should get to that one by Valentine's Day.

I know I just inflicted pony on you at the beginning of this post, but there is no way in hell you're getting through this post without some Steven Magnet. For best results, listen to the song while watching the gif.

What a world!

October Card Show - '53 Topps

Great googely moogely, it's almost December and I still have a bunch of stuff to post from the October card show! Better get on it. I have to pick up at least one 1953 Topps card for my set whenever I go to a card show. I did better than just one this time.

Vintage Yankees are such a pain in the butt. I've chased this one forever and finally picked this one up in the Uncle Dick's bargain bin for $3.50. Go away Loch Ness Monster! I don't have no three-fiddy for you! I spent it on Steady Eddie Lopat! I'm not sure what the 124 means on the top left corner as Ed's number is 87 in the set. This is also one of my favorite paintings in the set. DETERMINATION.

Billy Pierce is one of the best pitchers you've never heard of. 211 wins, one strikeout short of 2000, lifetime ERA Plus of 119. He's got the Tim Lincecum 420 look down pat too. I especially like the advertisements painted in the background. I really want to go out and buy some LL and RCE now. Hey... I wonder if the full painting showed the signs as saying BILL PIERCE. Some originals exist out there, I'll have to do some interwebs detectiving on that.

Hmmm... it does say ILL RCE. Close enough! Dang, the original painting was only 3 1/2" by 5"?? Anyone got three and a half grand, plus shipping I could borrow?

In the past 10 years Vintage Red Sox cards have become even MORE of a pain in the ass to come by than Vintage Yankees. This card of Sammy White took me forever to find. Unfortunately I'm rapidly running out of  low number commons to buy. Pretty soon I'm going to have to start budgeting a Jackson or (gulp) a Grant in my card show purchases just to knock off one card out of the set. Here's another ad in the background, this time with a W. Thank goodness I'm lazy or I'd be compelled to pull out the binder and check out all the signs in the background of the '53s looking for ones that include letters from the player's name.

Let's close this sucka out with a high number! Here's number 245, Bill Norman. In immaculate shape. Don't give me that look, brownie. This card is PERFECT. For a '53 Topps high number. Of a St. Louis Browns coach. That only cost me two bucks. PERFECT, I SAY. Ok, it's a little bit worn. Just a smidge. Slightly dinged corners. Tiiiiiiny little crease here and there. Who wants a mint vintage card anyway? I can buy some '53 Archives cards for that. I don't want no glossy cards with square corners! I want me some real nitty gritty vintage dammit! With pretty fluffy clouds in the background!

Sadly, no pages were completed with the acquisitions from this show. Maybe next show I'll pick up a '53 Jackie and knock out that first page. Lemme just find a Franklin first...

OBEY '57

I have no idea why I'm so fixated on Shepard Fairey right now.

When in doubt, blame ponies.

MLP:FIM Season 2 Ep 8

Rainbow Dash episode again. I honestly might just sleep in. This has been a rough week. Oh who am I kidding. MUST PONY. Maybe. I dunno man, it's late and I'm really tired. If it's 10:00am and I still haven't linked to live streams of the episode you'll know I am Pony Fail.

Synopsis: There is a new hero in Ponyville who is masked and stealing Rainbow Dash's thunder.

Basically Rainbow Dash fights Batman. Or, um, Batmare. I personally hope the masked mare is this:

If you know who Scootaloo and Gilda are supposed to be without me telling you, then you have my eternal admiration. Although I'm just NOW noticing I forgot to draw the mask. Derp.

Live streams here. I usually watch on the Reddit stream, but I've checked Reddit maybe a couple of times in the past week. Like I said, rough week. If there ain't no links here, it means I'm still asleep.

Hopes and dreams:

I'm posting this again just because.

Yeah I know Fluttershy (and Rainbow Dash) sang last episode but I'm greedy. MOAR SINGING PLZ

I'd like Rainbow Dash to fail miserably some more. RD is the closest thing this series has to a Bugs Bunny type character and Bugs was at his best when he had a little adversity, like the time he was fighting the Gremlin in the World War Two airplane. As soon as he became too cool for school, his character started sucking. Don't even get me started on what they did to Daffy, goddamn Warner Brothers.

Pinkie Pie, Pinkie Pie and more Pinkie Pie. Singing Pinkie Pie would be fantastic. Batman Pinkie Pie would be Amazing! Singing Batman Pinkie Pie would be SPLENDIFTABULAR! I know that isn't even a word! A new word would have to be created for Singing Batman Pinkie Pie!

I'm also curious to see if I can keep a certain streak up this week. I probably won't, and it's my fault, but I'm interested to see if it happens.

Ok, that's enough. Time for bed. (I write all these things out the night before)

Friday, November 25, 2011

Ok, so the title is disgusting. Nonetheless it's accurate. So here's how my night has gone.

I have wantlists to fulfill, packages to seal, sketch cards to draw, videos to make and ponies to watch and even some actual work work I need to finish tonight. Oviously I spend my precious time farting around on teh interwebs catching up on blogs. I see this post by Play at the Plate lamenting that retail wax is for suckers. I chuckle to myself knowing that ALL wax is for suckers. A few transmogrified cards are shown in the post so I head over to the Topps Diamond Giveaway site so I can star clearing out all the dumb trades that get offered to me. I had knocked out a couple three dozen before I got the this beauty:

McCann for Chipper. How quaint. I've also been offered Prado, Hanson, Hudson, Jurrjens and about 20 Mike Minors for Chipper. Why doesn't someone offer me a damn Heyward for Chipper, I'd instantly drop dead from mixed emotions and wouldn't have to deal with this site ever again. Oh well, scroll, scroll....

What the duece? Someone offered me a Heyward?? Wait... that's MY side of the card aisle!!

My reaction:

Aww forget it, I'll just dump my happy reaction face folder again.

Sketch Card #7 - Timmy the Giant

I need to start catching up on my sketch cards since I've got a month's worth in the draft folder. That isn't even counting the ones I've done in the past week or so. Here's a particularly terrifying one I sent to a Giants fan.

This was sent out to a Mr. Adam Smith with a whole flopton of Giants cards in exchange for some stickers I needed. Not that Adam Smith. Unless I traded with a ghost. And ghosts are usually Angels fans anyway. Adam finished off about a quarter of the album (After Chris Harris softened it up for him) so the duplicate Giants were well worth it.

Of course no good deed goes unpunished so I drew this horrorshow of a sketch card for him as well. Easy concept, Giant fan - Tim Lincecum - Timmy the Giant - Andre the Giant - has a posse. It doesn't hurt that I look at this sticker from Chris Harris damn near every day. Jefferson Burdick's posse is way better than Andre's. I should probably be executed for the execution though. I thought about doing Timmy in an OBEY style, but I didn't know how to do that so I just started drawing him normal-like. Then he started getting weirder and weirder looking. Weird is actually a good look for Tim, so I went with it. He had no cap to begin with but his hair looked really odd so I covered up my mistakes. Eventually I got to the point where I couldn't really make it any better or worse, so I started lettering. That actually turned out ok.

Well, on the front at least. Crappy lettering where I don't leave enough room is my trademark! Unless Shepard Fairey already has that one. Don't sue me, bro! 's just a joke!

I can't remember if Adam has a blog or not. If you're reading and have one let me know so I can linky. If you don't, start one up. I'm sure there's puh-lenty of bloggers who want to trade you their Giants cards. Find us some A's collectors while you're at it too.
