Random Vintage Brave #2

Off day. No game today as we bask in the glow of a Cubbie asswhoopin. Here's a vintage classic to get me through the night without a game to watch.

Hmmm... Boston Brave, awkward photo crop, batting stance that looks like the player is fending off zombies instead of curveballs. Who is this chap? Why, this is one of the greatest cards in the hobby...

Jack "Sour Mash" Daniels rookie card! Jack only had one year in the bigs and the stats on the back of this card are the career totals. But come on, it's Jack Daniels. Everyone wants a Jack Daniels rookie card. This one, massive crease and all, is tucked away safely in my Vintage Braves binder so find your own. The line mentioning how drawing bases on balls is as important as whacking homers is also very intriguing. Is this an early example of people starting to realise the value of on base percentage? Or is it a Bowman copywriter's desperate attempt to find something good to say about a fourth outfielder who hit .187? The world may never know...

That's a great name. I'm sure if someone had the last name Daniels, it would be hard to resist naming your kid Jack. I wonder if people with the surname Beam have a similar problem.

You can send this to him to autograph, he signs through the mail.
